Apartment Fire Displaces at Least 40 in Fort Worth VIDEO: A large fire ripped through an apartment building early Monday in west Fort Worth, forcing at least 40 people from their homes, fire officials say. Firefighters were first called at about 2:45 a.m. to The Cassidy at Western Hills apartment community in the 8700 block of North Normandale Street. Cody Hollingsworth captured the fire on his cell phone, just moments after his wife and kids escaped the fire. "It was a choking smoke smell, almost like a fire pit. I grabbed basically whatever we could right then and there, get down the steps, and as soon as we get down the steps, the apartment directly behind you, you could see flames kind of funneling out of it," Hollingsworth said. He said the family dog Snuggles was able to run out when firefighters entered the building. The family's cats are still missing. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Woman, dog found dead in Deer Park house fire A woman and a dog were found dead after a house fire in Deer Park. Firefighters say the fire started just after midnight Monday at a home on East 2nd Street and Center Street. When Deer Park Fire Department got to the house, there was heavy smoke coming from this small home. They cut a hole in the roof for ventilation to put out the fire, which took a few hours. Firefighters say they quickly found a woman, believed to be in her early 40s, in the back kitchen area. Deer Park Fire Marshal tells FOX 26 he believes she may have been trying to escape when she died. The dog was found in another part of the home. Officials don't suspect any criminal activity, but they are investigating the cause. The fire marshal did say there were no smoke detectors. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Sparking power line adds to danger for crews battling San Antonio house fire San Antonio fire crews faced double the danger as they battled a house fire on the city's West Side early Monday. The fire broke out after 6:30 a.m. inside what turned out to be an abandoned house in the 1300 block of Culebra Road. "Given the fact that the fire was actively coming out of the front, it was a well-developed fire when we got here," said Captain Landon Digby with the San Antonio Fire Department. Digby said firefighters began to attack the flames as best as they could, but they also had to keep their distance from a power line that was showering down sparks on the scene. The fire had damaged the line causing part of it to come down. "It was preventing us from working an entire corner of the building and accessing one side," he said. Meanwhile, firefighters were concerned about the fire possibly spreading to another building on that same side. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Fire crews able to contain Corpus Christi structure fire, no injuries reported PHOTOS: Emergency personnel were called to a structure fire at the Repcon Inc. headquarters, a chemical plant and refinery construction company, on the 7500 block of Up River Road at about 10 p.m. Saturday night. According to a press release from the City of Corpus Christi, crews encountered heavy fire and smoke upon arrival of the scene. Units from the Corpus Christi Fire Department and Annaville Fire Department responded to a second alarm to provide support. The release states crews used elevated water streams to attack the blaze. Water pressure was increased in the area due to the large volume needed to fight the flames. Firefighters were able to limit the damage to one large-building and maintenance shop, the release states. "Firefighters were faced with heavy fire and smoke conditions when arriving on scene," Fire Chief Robert Rocha said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI San Angelo Police arrest man on arson charge for house fire A San Angelo man has been arrested and charged with arson related to a house fire on West Harris Avenue Sunday night. According to a release from the San Angelo Police Department, at approximately 8:44 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to a home in the 2400 block of West Harris Avenue for a structure fire. Officers found a home fully engulfed in flames and another house beginning to catch fire. The release said the San Angelo Fire Department proceeded to quickly extinguish the flames and it was discovered the fire had possibly been intentionally started by the resident's son. SAPD officers found out the resident's son, Justin Ross Cuellar, 28, had threatened to "blow up" the house and the neighbors confirmed hearing an explosion before seeing the the house catch fire. Fire erupts at meat processing facility in Pennsylvania VIDEO: Fire engulfed the center building at Maid-Rite Steak Co. Inc. in Scott Township, sending flames high into the night sky. The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Explosions rocked the ground as firefighters from 17 local departments tried to knock down the fire inside the meat processing facility. The company's human resources director says the building was evacuated after the fire broke out, and everyone is accounted for. Battling the blaze proved difficult. Scott Township Fire Chief Matt Pritchyk says a nearby pump did not work, so he called in tanker trucks to retrieve water from a nearby pond. PennDot crews salted the roads to keep them from freezing. "Very cold conditions, lots of ice on the ground. Commonwealth Health Ems set up a recovery station for the firefighters battling the blaze in the cold," said John Montes, Commonwealth Health Administrative Director of EMS. WNEP-TV ABC 16 SCRANTON Former Connecticut Fire Chief John Oates Named New CEO of IPSDI John H. Oates, former fire chief of the East Hartford Fire Department in Connecticut, has been named the new CEO of the International Public Safety Data Institute by the organization's board of directors. Oates replaces Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, who was appointed to lead the U.S. Fire Administration by President Joe Biden in October. "Educating fire departments around the country on how to leverage technology and data to provide lifesaving insights is my mission," said Oates. "We can't keep using 1981 procedures, techniques and data to solve 2021 problems. The fire service needs to improve how it views and applies information in its decision making, and IPSDI has two products in NFORS and FireCARES that are uniquely positioned to help rethink the future of safety in communities across America." IPSDI Virginia Christmas tree honors fallen first responders who lost their lives in the line of duty The holidays after losing a loved one can be a difficult time, which is why the Buchanan-based non-profit, Sirens and Salutes is honoring those who lost their lives this year in the line of duty. In front of the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Station, there is a white Christmas tree with a special meaning. Each ornament on the tree represents a service member who was killed in the line of duty this year. There are 278 ornaments on the tree. "Red for firefighters, blue for police officers and K-9s and tan for military. Anyone who has been killed in the line of duty in 2021 for this year has a star on the tree with their name on it, and where they were from and the date they lost their lives," said Sirens and Salutes President, Bill Price. Price has created a tree like this every year since 2017 when he lost his own father who served as a police officer. WSLS-TV NBC10 ROANOKE How Florida first responders are saving time getting to emergencies PHOTOS: Oftentimes first responders must physically get out and open unmanned security gates in neighborhoods when there's an emergency, but now technology is helping get them through much quicker. For all the unmanned gates protecting communities in Palm Beach County, for years now they've been required to have Knox Boxes. A key is required to turn in the box in order to get the gate to open for emergency personnel. It can take a minute to a minute and a half. Now more communities are getting what's called Click2Enter boxes, which allow the gates to open with a push of a button on a radio over a protected frequency. A fire truck or ambulance could get through in seconds. "It always matters, the faster we get there, the better we are and the better outcome," said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Fire Marshal David DeRita.
