San Antonio firefighters found one man dead in a bedroom following a fire at a home on the Northeast Side Monday morning. Firefighters responded to the small blaze just after 6:30 a.m. Monday at a home in the 12800 block of Tarrytown Street, not far from Judson Road and Interstate 35. Firefighters entered the home and found one man dead in a bedroom, where they believe the blaze originated. Officials believe the victim died from smoke inhalation due to heavy smoke in the room. The San Antonio Fire Department issued an update around 12:45 p.m., saying the cause of the fire is accidental. "There was evidence smoking material near the area of origin," the SAFD tweeted. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PHOTO: According to the Pedernales Fire Department, a fire engine operator lost consciousness while behind the wheel and collided with a tree. The fire department says the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. during a Memorial Day parade. A spokesperson for the dire Department said that the incident occurred at the intersection of Moffat Dr and Cowal Drive South in Briarcliff, Texas. The engine was said to only be going 20 mph when it collided with a tree. The fire department has reported two members of the crew were transported with non-life-threatening injures, but have since been released from the hospital. The spokesperson said no bystanders were injured. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says he is still pushing compliance over punishment in getting the city's bars and clubs to follow capacity limits ordered by the state. Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña said his investigators responded to over 500 overcrowding complaints during the Memorial Day weekend. He said all of those were handled successfully through voluntary compliance. On Sunday, Turner vowed to enforce the state's new 25% capacity limit on bars and clubs. He said his decision is in response to social media videos that showed blatant violations of the rules. But just a couple days earlier, Mayor Turner had said the city would not be writing citations until they know the state supports them. The Houston firefighters' union called it a political flip-flop and said HFD inspectors and arson investigators should not be made to be the mayor's "political enforcers." KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON A fire destroys a century old building north of Webb County. According to the Dimmit County Fire Department, the fire was reported on Monday morning shortly around 12 a.m. Firefighters arrived to see the Catarina Hotel and Restaurant located in Catarina, Texas up in flames. Upon arrival, structure was fully engulfed with flames showing from the roof and north side walls of the building. Dimmit County Communications were advised to make contact with Carrizo Springs volunteer fire department for help along with Asherton volunteer fire department. Firefighters from all departments battled the fire for some time until it was placed under control. The cause of the fire was ruled undetermined till further investigation. KGNS-TV NBC 8 LAREDO A driver died after crashing into the back of a fire truck that was on scene of another crash on I-20 early Sunday morning. Arlington police and firefighters were investigating an overturned vehicle near South Center Street, just after 12:45 a.m. A fire engine was in the left lane and shoulder with emergency lights on, but one driver did not move over and crashed into the fire truck. Only one person was inside the vehicle, and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead hours later. The driver who died has not yet been identified. KDFW FOX 4 DALLAS The 5-5-5 Safety initiative began shortly after Mark and Susan Hill laid their son, Lubbock Fire Lieutenant Eric Hill, to rest in January. Several months later, the campaign has evolved to allow for ways the public can apply the steps to everyday life and show they are taking part. "It's five ways to stay safe," Mark said. "You need to plan. You need to act. Of course, we always want to be hugging the people that we love. So, it can fit into work, at home, all kinds of different things to think about. It's just trying to be safe." Mark and Susan told KCBD in late January they came up with the idea after five bells were rung three times at Lt. Hill's funeral. It signified the fallen firefighter. "We started this program because we do not want any family to go through what we did on January 11," Susan said. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK |

A huge fire that tore through a warehouse on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf has destroyed fishing gear used to deliver about two-thirds of the city's fresh seafood, threatening to disrupt the upcoming Dungeness crab season, local fishermen said Sunday. The fire erupted before dawn Saturday and wiped out the warehouse the size of a football field near the end of Pier 45. Larry Collins, who runs the San Francisco Community Fishing Association, estimates that thousands of crab, shrimp and black cod traps worth up to $5 million were lost in the blaze. He told the San Francisco Chronicle the numbers could be far higher since port officials changed the warehouse's function into a storage facility in February because it lacked proper fire sprinklers. "Pier 45 is the heart and soul of commercial fishing out of the Bay Area," Collins said. "To take a hit like this, it's a bad one. Most people don't think about where their salmon, crab or black cod come from, but that's where: It's Pier 45." KNTV NBC 11 SAN JOSE As the coronavirus pandemic continues to unfold, Iowa's first responders say the state should no longer hold off on declaring Emergency Medical Services an essential service. That status is something EMS workers in Iowa have sought long before COVID-19. Being declared "essential" would require ambulance service across the state, instead of relying on a patchwork of volunteers, agencies and providers. Mark McCulloch, deputy chief of EMS for West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services, says he thinks the current crisis will prompt those who have resisted such a move to reconsider. "The understanding of how important and how critical our services are, I think, is increased," he states. McCulloch says the lack of guaranteed emergency medical services is especially a problem in rural parts of Iowa, where younger adults are moving away and reducing volunteer ranks. PUBLIC NEWS SERVICE VIDEO: A fire truck, adorned with a large American flag, tipped over shortly before 11:30 a.m. Monday in Plumstead Township, Bucks County. The view from Chopper 6 showed the truck on its side in a parking lot. The extended ladder was on the ground, stretched across the roadway in the area 4040 Ferry Road. The flag was attached to the ladder. Officials say the truck was placed outside the fire company to display a flag over Route 611. When the crew went to reposition the truck the vehicle tipped over. The ladder struck a car on Route 611. "Unfortunately a vehicle was traveling southbound on the road at that time underneath the tower, the tower hit the roof of the vehicle. There were two occupants in that vehicle that had minor injuries that were taken to the hospital and should be getting released shortly," said Lt. Richard Frederick of the Plumstead Township. Police confirm there were minor injuries in the incident. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA The spread of the novel coronavirus has not slowed in 24 states, according to a new model by Imperial College London that forecasts infection spikes as more people travel and leave their homes in the coming weeks. Why it matters: Nearly every state across the U.S. has taken steps to reopen their economies partially or completely, including some regions and industries that are deemed "low-risk" for spreading the virus, per a New York Times analysis. What they found: Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Colorado and Ohio are at the highest risk in the college's model — which has not yet been peer-reviewed — followed by Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Alabama and Wisconsin. The researchers predict that deaths over the next two months could exceed the current national death toll by more than two-fold, if transmissions continue to rise as less social distancing is enforced. They emphasize that rapid testing, contact tracing and behavioral precautions are crucial to slow the spread. AXIOS |
