Three pets were killed in a fire at a Northwest Side duplex on Monday, according to San Antonio firefighters. The fire was called in just after noon in the 1800 block of Fresno, not far from West Avenue. A passerby reported the flames since no one was at home at the time of the fire, firefighters said. However, three dogs inside the duplex were later found dead. Firefighters said that the second unit inside the building was not damaged by fire, smoke or water. The cause of the fire is not currently known, but it started in what is believed to be a bedroom in the back of the home. Fire investigators were on the scene. As of now, the estimated amount of damage is unknown.

PHOTOS: A fire engine belonging to the Houston Fire Department was involved in a major crash that damaged at least one other vehicle near the Gulf Freeway feeder road just past the South Beltway on Monday afternoon. SkyEye captured the aftermath of the wreck, with what appeared to be a Dodge Charger behind the fire engine. The smaller vehicle had major damage to its front end and fluids leaking out. Houston Police Department said officers received the call at 3:35 p.m. in the 13400 block of the Gulf Freeway near Conklin Lane. The crash site was just off the northbound feeder. ABC13's Don Armstrong also reported seeing another damaged vehicle being hauled off from the scene. Police did not specify how this vehicle was involved. Fire Chief Samuel Peña elaborated on what happened, explaining that a motorist hit one of the department's vehicles while in service at a primary scene for the third time in a week.

Crews from the San Marcos, Kyle and North Hays fire departments as well as local emergency medical services crews responded to a fire at 900 Morningwood Drive, San Marcos, on May 20, according to a press release from Hays County. The fire was contained after four hours of burning that scorched about 5 acres, according to Hays County Fire Marshal Mark Wobus. "The Morningwood incident began as a structure fire, but the blaze jumped to a neighboring property behind the outbuilding," Wobus said in the release. "There were no homes or other structures directly behind the location where the fire began." There were no injuries, and no other structures were affected. This is one of multiple fires that have happened throughout Hays County in recent months.
COMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER
College Station firefighters credit working smoke detectors with waking up a College Station resident Monday just after 4 a.m. to a fire in a second story apartment. CSFD battalion chief Josh Varner say after the resident called 9-1-1, she alerted her neighbors. No one was injured and nine occupants were displaced from two units out of an eight unit building at The Pearl apartments on Harvey Road. The fire, which generated heavy smoke coming from the roof, was extinguished 11 minutes after the 9-1-1 call was received. 25 firefighters responded to the fire which originated in a bathroom exhaust fan. The cause remains under investigation. Sunday night, six CSFD units and one from Bryan responded to a residential fire alarm in the area of Spring Loop and University.

No one was injured after firefighters responded to a residential garage that caught fire in Longview Sunday afternoon. The Longview Fire Department said crews arrived on Sunday to a residence on Covington Drive to find a detached garage fully involved with fire. Because of the flames and a sagging roof, firefighters used a defense approach. Several vehicles inside the garage and in the driveway were damaged, the fire department said. The blaze was under control within about 30 minutes, according to LFD.

VIDEO: Doing lawn work in hot weather is no fun, but it can also be dangerous. Some local volunteer firefighters helped an elderly woman with her yard, and now their good deed is going viral. "We obviously can't help every single person in every single way they need, but there are certain individuals that just need resources that are beyond what they're capable of doing," said RVFD Capt. Stephen Sullivan Around 3 p.m. Friday, a woman called the Robinson Volunteer Fire Dept. saying she saw an elderly woman with a cane push-mowing her yard. "It was extremely hot on Friday evening, and I immediately knew we had to do something to help this lady out," said Les Avant, a firefighter/paramedic at RVFD who took the call. "I think it's really indicative of first responders in general--police, fire, EMS--we try to help when we can."

Firefighters are still working to extinguish hotspots after a massive fire broke out inside a Newport hotel Monday evening. Crews responded to the Wayfinder Hotel on Admiral Kalbfus Road shortly after 8 p.m. as heavy flames and smoke could be seen for miles pouring from the roof and windows. Departments from six different communities were called in as mutual aid to help put out the flames at the four-story hotel, which is across the street from the old Newport Grand Casino. Newport Deputy Chief Mark Riding said three firefighters suffered minor injuries and no residents were hurt. "We actually had one firefighter go through a floor, he was rescued by the crews that were with him," Riding said. "We don't know if it was from the heat or the water weight that was causing collapses."

Traditional weddings are, you know, traditional — and they don't typically include things like setting yourself on fire as you head off into the night. For one Utah couple, however, being sprayed with a fire extinguisher to douse errant flames is commonplace, so doing the same on their wedding day was just par for the course. Gabe Jessop and Ambyr Mishelle, of Ogden, are stunt doubles who work on film and television sets for shows such as "Yellowstone" and "Hereditary." According to Jessop, having a wedding that showcased their "day job," was a way to show friends and family what brought the two of them together. So, with the help of professionals in pyrotechnics, securing the proper permits and all that jazz, the couple blazed their way down a beachy aisle on the shores of Wasatch County's Jordanelle State Park in front of family and friends and millions of viewers who caught wind — or shall we say smoke — of their flaming wedding.

The1930 American LaFrance Tiller Truck is now back home. The Middletown Fire Department used the truck from 1930 to about 1963 and recently got a call from someone in Binghamton, New York – the old truck was sitting on a lot there. Jim Loewenthal, a retired Middletown firefighter, enlisted his friends and fellow former firefighters and had the 75-foot fire truck brought back to Middletown. Now, the restoration work is beginning. "It's a lot of history and we've had a lot of fun restoring it. It's been nothing but a team effort and it's been a wonderful journey," said Loewenthal. Among those admiring the antique fire truck at a recent restoration day in Middletown was John Cryulik. Cyrulik is now 103 years old and used to drive the Tiller fire truck. "it's wonderful to see it again because I remember when they took it away…. It's a nice truck," said Cyrulik.

The IAFF has been collaborating with the U.S. Navy on a program to improve the fitness, health and wellness of Navy fire fighters by encouraging them to become more active. In January 2022, the IAFF launched Integrated Group Navy Fire Instruction, Training and Education (IGNITE), a comprehensive 18-month wellness-fitness program, in collaboration with fire fighters from Navy Region Mid-Atlantic (NRMA). The program has been funded by the Navy through a two-year federal grant. The IGNITE program involves eight IAFF federal locals in the Mid-Atlantic region representing more than 500 federal fire fighters. If successful, the program could be rolled out across U.S. Navy bases nationwide. Created as an extension of the IAFF's Fit to Thrive (F2T) program, IGNITE aims to do more than provide exercise routines and nutrition tips.

The Kissimmee Fire Department will begin integrating telemedicine and patient navigation into the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system with the Tele911 program beginning Monday, June 6. The use of Tele911, Inc. by Kissimmee Fire Department is intended to reduce ambulance transports to the Emergency Room for residents who call 911 with non-emergency medical issues. KFD is one of the first fire departments in Florida to use this service. Patients will be evaluated by KFD paramedics, who will determine if they are stable and can participate in a live telehealth visit. The Tele911 emergency physician will then make an appropriate disposition and treatment plan that meets the patient's needs. The patient will also receive a next day follow-up with a physician. Patients who are not transported will also receive a follow-up by a Tele911 social worker to provide them with linkage to primary care and social services.
