Unidentified body found after Belton home was engulfed in flames, destroyed A Belton home was destroyed by a fire Saturday, according to Belton Public Information Officer Paul Romer. A 9-1-1 caller reported seeing smoke and embers near the 4600 block of Toll Bridge Rd. at around 3:39 a.m. Saturday morning. When firefighters arrived, they found a house fully engulfed in flames, according to Romer. A preliminary investigation by the Belton Fire Department ruled that the fire was accidental/undetermined. The home, located about a quarter-mile off Toll Bridge Road, was destroyed by the fire. A body was found in the rubble and was sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy to help identify the body. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Remembering San Antonio firefighter Scott Deem On this date three years ago, the first alarm of many sounded around nine o'clock, for what turned out to be a loss many will never forget. As the Ingram Square Shopping Center in north west San Antonio was consumed by an arson fire, San Antonio Firefighter Scott Deem was lost when he could not escape from the burning building. Emond Johnson is charged with murder, accused of setting the fire to escape debt. More than one-thousand days later, Johnson is still sitting in the Bexar County jail awaiting trial. The wait for justice remains a heartache for Deem's family. Monday afternoon, several family members made their annual visit to San Fernando Cemetery on the anniversary of his death. Writing messages to heaven, the family quietly capped off a tradition, bringing balloons with messages they hope will reach him. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO South Padre Island fire chief explains importance of mutual aid agreements VIDEO: From Port Isabel to Pharr, 15 fire departments stepped up to help their brothers and sisters on South Padre Island. With a smaller department, South Padre Island fire and ocean rescue were in the fire fight of their careers Saturday morning. Thanks to a mutual aid agreement with several other agencies, firefighters managed to save lives and limit the structure damage to just one building. The response even included video from social media and travelers in neighboring hotels. KRGV-TV CHANNEL 5 WESLACO Georgetown starts testing first responders for COVID-19 antibodies With about 1,000 first responders in different agencies across Williamson County, Georgetown Fire Department (GFD) Chief John Sullivan hopes testing most of them for COVID-19 antibodies will shed some light on the response to the virus. "The logical next step was to try to understand to what degree there may be asymptomatic spread of this disease among first responders," Sullivan said. EMS personnel are not required to take the Abbott antibody test. It will not determine if a police officer, firefighter, paramedic or dispatcher currently has the virus, but could show if the person had the virus and developed an immune defense to it. "It helps us to see the relationship this virus has when we're making patient care," Jean Fuselier, a firefighter/paramedic for GFD, said. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Several departments respond to large barn fire in Rusk County A large barn fire in Rusk County demanded the help of several departments early Tuesday morning. Shortly before midnight, Rusk County Office of Emergency Management reported a fully involved structure fire on FM 850 east of US 259. Pictures from the Crims Chapel VFD show what was left behind from the blaze. They said the barn was used to store hay. Rusk County OEM added there was "substantial emergency vehicle presence" from Henderson, New London and Crims Chapel VFD. Officials are asking people to avoid this area as they begin their investigation. No word on what caused the fire to begin. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER Several fire departments battle commercial structure fire near Lakeport Several fire departments are battling a commercial structure fire in Gregg County Monday morning. NFFF Honors our Nation's Fallen Heroes: 50 First Responders Succumb to COVID-19 On March 13, 2020, President Trump declared the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, outbreak a National Emergency. Since then, life has inarguably and most drastically changed for all of us. Global travel restrictions grounded all international travel. State-regulated stay-at-home orders suspended non-essential in-person business operations. The White House and almost every local jurisdiction issued social distancing guidelines, and schools were closed. The country saw the steepest decrease in employment rates since the Depression. One thing remained constant, firefighters, EMS responders, and all first responders continued to answer the calls for service. The United States economy was essentially taken offline, and society entered a pandemic-induced coma awaiting containment of the virus. The United States COVID-19 death toll tops 87,000, and more than 1.46 million confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported. CHILLICOTHE NEWS EMS Workers Are Integral to the Fight Against Coronavirus; Just a Few Decades Ago, America's EMS System Didn't Even Exist EMS Week, which takes place in 2020 from May 17-23, is an annual time to recognize the life-saving efforts of emergency medical services personnel. While celebratory events won't take place in person this year, EMS personnel are getting more recognition than usual: even before EMS week, virtually and during daily cheers for healthcare workers, they are widely hailed as heroes on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. But though sick people have always needed someone to help get them to medical attention, the modern American EMS field is only about five decades old — and can be traced to what one scholarly report called a "neglected epidemic." As driving, especially highway driving, became a central part of American society, so did accidental injuries and preventable deaths due to inadequate care after car accidents. Doctors were overextended and new types of medical personnel were needed to take some pre-diagnostic tasks off their plates. TIME MAGAZINE 2 firefighters injured in extra-alarm fire in Chicago VIDEO: Two firefighters were injured while battling a fire on the city's South Side. The fire started just before 6 a.m. Tuesday on the first-floor of Vincennes Food Mart in the 7900 block of South Vincennes Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood. The building houses a business and apartments. The fire was upgraded to a 3-11 and spread to a second building, according to fire officials. According to fire officials, two firefighters were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. No other injuries have been reported. One building will need to be demolished due to the extensive damage, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. CTA is rerouting the 8A and 79 buses. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO University of Nebraska launches 1-Check COVID app to help individuals screen for symptoms A new mobile app, 1-Check COVID, has been launched by the University of Nebraska as a screening guide for individuals to use as reference if they are concerned that they might have the coronavirus. The app will also help first responders and other health care providers determine a person's likelihood of carrying the disease. The app allows users to privately answer a series of questions and assess their risk of having COVID-19. The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) informs that based on the user's input, the screening app will issue a "low-risk," "urgent risk" or "emergent risk" assessment and guide the individual user and up to six family and friends toward possible next steps specific to their needs. UNMC stated that the steps can help an individual continue monitoring symptoms, contact one's health care clinic or public health department to determine whether testing is needed, or help reach the nearest emergency facility and/or calling 911. KFXL-TV FOX 51 LINCOLN CDC plans sweeping COVID-19 antibody study in 25 metropolitan areas The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans a nationwide study of up to 325,000 people to track how the new coronavirus is spreading across the country into next year and beyond, a CDC spokeswoman and researchers conducting the effort told Reuters. The CDC study, expected to launch in June or July, will test samples from blood donors in 25 metropolitan areas for antibodies created when the immune system fights the coronavirus, said Dr. Michael Busch, director of the nonprofit Vitalant Research Institute. Busch is leading a preliminary version of the study — funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases — that is testing the first 36,000 samples. The CDC-funded portion, to be formally announced this week, will expand the scope and time frame, taking samples over 18 months to see how antibodies evolve over time, said CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund.
