Roof collapses during fire at 2-story home in Spring, officials say VIDEO: Firefighters are investigating a house fire in the Spring area Tuesday, Klein Fire Department Deputy Chief Reinkemeyer said. Fire crews said they responded to reports of a residential fire at around 1:40 a.m. in the 74000 block of Theisswood Road Tuesday morning. When they arrived at the scene, units located a two-story residence with heavy fire and smoke showing to the roof. Firefighters said parts of the roof collapsed in. Fire crews said they evacuated the home and fought the fire from the exterior. All occupants and pets inside the residence exited safely, firefighters said. At this time, Reinkemeyer said no injuries have been reported to firefighters and civilians. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON San Angelo firefighters have returned after fighting fires in Crockett County On Sunday, April 19, a wildfire began raging along Holcombe Road in Crockett County. A combination of intense heat and high winds quickly led the fire to becoming out of control. That's when the fire department in Ozona called neighboring towns and cities. The San Angelo Fire Department was the first strike team on the scene. "When they call us, it's because it's starting to get out of control. We're blessed to be able to help them now, because we weren't always able to. We also do this on a volunteer basis. The fire department does not send us or pay us to respond to those fires. We look for the opportunity to go because it's an opportunity for us to train, get more experience, and then also develop good relationships with them," Fred Barnett, SAFD Battalion Chief, said. KXVA/KIDY-TV FOX ABILENE/SAN ANGELO Fort Worth Mayor returns to work, announces new partnership to decontaminate used N95 masks Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price made her first public appearance since going into self-isolation. Last month, the mayor was exposed to someone who tested positive. However, she did not test positive. Price announced a partnership with a company that can decontaminate used N95 respirators for healthcare workers and first responders. It is one of 60 units across the United States and six in Texas where N95 respirators will be decontaminated. It's for medical professionals and first responders to extend the life of much-needed PPE by cleaning and returning them as soon as possible. Mayor Betsy Price made her first public appearance in weeks after isolating at home because she came into contact with a city employee who tested positive. "I feel great, and I'm just looking forward to seeing people again and being able to do my job," she said. KDFW FOX 4 DALLAS Houston firefighter shares the special bond he has with police officer involved in fatal helicopter crash Hundreds lined the streets of Houston Monday for a procession in honor of Houston police officer, Jason Knox, who was killed in a helicopter crash Saturday morning. Knox, 35, died Saturday when the helicopter he and Officer Chase Cormier were in, crashed at an apartment complex on the city's northside. The pair, officials said, were searching Greens Bayou for reports of bodies in the water when, as a witness described, their helicopter fell out of the sky. Knox's body was escorted to Pat H. Foley & Company Funeral Home in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston's northside Monday morning. The crowd of mourners included members of the Houston Police Department as well as those who did not personally know Knox but felt compelled to pay their respects. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Gun Barrel City firefighters save dog trapped in cistern Gun Barrel City firefighters saved a dog that had fallen into a cistern Saturday. According to the fire department, they responded to the 600 block of Peach Tree Lane at 7:40 p.m. on Saturday. The fire department said the residents, Angela Evans and Larry Laden, recently relocated to Gun Barrel City from central Texas and were out for a drive around their new property. According to Angela Evans, when they passed by a slab where a house once stood on the property, they could hear barking from down an old cistern. Upon further investigation, they discovered a dog at the bottom of the cistern that was approximately ten feet deep and immediately called 911. Gun Barrel City Fire Department Assistant Chief Jason Raney, Captain Jordan West and Lieutenant Michael Bradley responded to the scene. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

T-Mobile Loses GAO Appeal On April 8, 2020 the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that T-Mobile could not meet the public safety requirements that were established in a Request for Qualification (RFQ) that was issued by Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency which is an independent Federal entity. This RFQ for cellular services had as a requirement "enhanced priority-type features" which the agency identified as "AT&T FirstNet or equal". T-Mobile challenged that the RFQ failed to "clearly identify the salient characteristic for the brand name item (FirstNet) and that requirements for a private network with priority and pre-emptive capabilities are unduly restrictive". The GAO concluded that the agency has shown that the restrictive specifications are reasonably necessary to meet its legitimate need and they denied the protest in a letter issued in early April. ALL THINGS FIRSTNET An inside look into Alabama's Unified Command for COVID-19 Response team Information about the coronavirus is changing day by day, and that is why the state of Alabama has a team of state agencies working side by side to gather information and compile data about COVID-19 as the worldwide pandemic continues to unfold. Located in the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery, Alabama's Unified Command for COVID-19 Response is a team comprised of four state agencies - the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), Alabama National Guard, and Alabama Forestry Commission. Together, they have joined forces to help fight the deadly coronavirus. "Unified Command has been driving this operation now for over a month," said State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris. "It's been extremely important for us in public health because we don't, we simply don't have the capacity to handle the problem of this size." WSFA-TV CBS 12 NEWS MONTGOMERY As new firefighters join fight against COVID-19, Maryland academy takes steps to protect recruits When Chase Sherrard completed field training ride-alongs for the Frederick County fire academy in February, the novel coronavirus was far from the major global threat it has become when his class graduated last week. "Things are a lot different now than when we were doing ride-alongs, especially on [medical/sick person] calls," the probationary firefighter said. "Before we even go in to the residence, we're at the door asking, ‘Do you have a fever? Do you have a cough?' — That sort of thing. So it's definitely a different procedure than most other calls we run." As a newly-graduated probationary firefighter, Sherrard is currently relegated to an observational role on what the fire division refers to as "person under investigation" or PUI calls involving individuals suspected of having COVID-19. FREDERICK NEWS POST - METERED SITE Study: EMS may be spreading COVID-19 due to lack of consistent protocols Recently published results of a survey of EMS providers from across the U.S. revealed inconsistent protocols, policies and training related to COVID-19 response could be contributing to the spread of the virus. Cody Vaugh Gibson and Dr. George Donald Collier of the Calhoun Community College Biological Sciences Research Group; and Christian Ventura, a researcher at the Center for Mind and Brain Studies at Bard College, published preliminary results of their study this week, with the goal to "investigate available resources, PPE availability, sanitation practices, institutional policies and opinions" of EMS providers through a self-reported survey. The results, which reflect provider responses from all 50 states, revealed: Limited access to N95 respirators; Little or no benefits for COVID-19-related work ; No institutional policy on social distancing practices. EMS1 New Hampshire Governor Announces Raise for Cops, Firefighters, EMS Workers Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services workers will be given an additional $300 weekly stipend to acknowledge their key role during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Chris Sununu said in a news conference on Monday. Part-time employees in these categories will receive $150 stipends. Eligibility for this extra pay began Monday and will continue through June 30. "Those who are the front lines and those at risk — we want to be there for them," Sununu said. He also said that $40 million will be made available to help cover COVID-19-related expenses for municipalities. The money is not to backfill revenue shortfalls, but is for direct expenses related to the pandemic such as childcare for first responders, telework costs and expenses for the deep cleaning of buildings.
