2 engineers to retire from Victoria Fire Department after more than 20 years Victoria Fire Department engineers Joel Gomez and Raul Liendo, who will both retire this month, have been with the department long enough to remember when fire and EMS were separate operations. Gomez and Liendo both started as members of Victoria EMS, according to a city news release, and cross-trained as firefighters when the city merged Fire and EMS functions in 1995. Gomez is retiring after 27 years with the city. "Joel has been a huge part of the EMS development for the Victoria Fire Department," said Chief Tracy Fox in the release. "He has mentored and trained countless paramedics throughout the years. Joel will be forever known for his dedication to the profession and unwavering compassion for his patients." Liendo is retiring after 28 years with the city. "Raul has been an active member of the VFD Special Operations teams throughout his career," Fox said in the release. VICTORIA ADVOCATE - METERED SITE VIDEO: Jasper home ruled a ‘total loss" after a devastating fire A home in Jasper was ruled a "total loss" after a devastating fire was caught on camera from an on-scene firefighter. The blaze broke out Sunday evening and the video was posted by the volunteer fire department. Authorities said that by the time first responders arrived to the scene, the home was already up in flames. So far, no injuries have been reported from the fire and the cause remains unknown. KETK-TV NBC 56 TYLER/LONGVIEW Two contractors critically burned in Seabrook explosion Two contractors are recovering from severe burns this morning after a house exploded in Seabrook. Monday afternoon, neighbors heard a loud pop then saw glass shatter and flames shoot out of the home on Cottage Cove in the Mystic Village subdivision. "I looked up and I could see glass coming down, then shortly after that...I could hear somebody hollering, coming down the street," a witness recalled. "The contractor was coming out of house. He was on fire and jumped in the pool." Authorities say there were four people in the house. Two contractors were flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be treated for their burns. Neighbors say the homeowner and his daughter were not seriously hurt, but were shaken up. Firefighters are still looking into what caused the blast, and say paint fumes could possibly be to blame. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Police, fire departments see tighter staffs as coronavirus cases among first responders rise, Houston Fire Chief says As the Houston area grapples with growing coronavirus cases and more urgency from local officials pleading with residents to take it seriously, a public safety issue may also be arising. The city's police and fire departments are seeing tighter staffs as more first responders test positive or are under quarantine. HFD Chief Sam Peña announced Monday at Mayor Sylvester Turner's press conference that there were 146 Houston police officers who have tested positive for the virus and 52 who have since returned to work after making a full recovery. At present, he said there are also 103 officers who are under quarantine for possible exposure. Meanwhile, HFD saw a 140% increase in COVID-19 cases among firefighters and 88 are under quarantine, Peña said. Two firefighters are currently in the ICU with coronavirus-related complications, he said. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Residents Displaced in Three Alarm Fire at East Dallas Apartment Complex A fire displaced residents of a Dallas apartment complex Sunday night, authorities say. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, units responded to a structure fire at the Halston Apartments, located at 8850 Ferguson Road, shortly after 7 p.m. Officials said when firefighters arrived at the three-story apartment building, they saw heavy fire coming out of the roof from a third-floor apartment. Firefighters attempted to put out the blaze, but command pulled all firefighters from inside the building and requested second and third alarm responses, officials said. Dallas Fire-Rescue said approximately 60 to 70 firefighters were at the scene, using four ladder-pipes to mitigate the situation. The apartment building has a total of 42 units, and an unknown number of residents were displaced during the fire. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Service to test Harlingen residents for COVID-19 at home It's a new take on COVID-19 testing. The city is launching a program in which its ambulance service will test elderly and low-income residents in their homes for the coronavirus As part of the Community Health Paramedics Program, the South Texas Emergency Care Foundation will test residents with virus symptoms after they call for ambulances. Earlier this week, city commissioners entered into an agreement in which the city will fund the cost of each $110 test kit. "This is an excellent program for home-bound individuals," City Manager Dan Serna said during the Wednesday meeting. So far, the city has set aside $50,000 to fund COVID-19 testing. The city's new program marks its first to test residents in their homes. "We're targeting the elderly and low-income," Josh Ramirez, the city's public health director, told city commissioners during the meeting. VALLEY MORNING STAR PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters Battle Heat, Heavy Smoke At Pennsylvania Tire Production Facility; ‘They Were Feeling The Heat Through Their Boots' VIDEO: Nearly one hundred firefighters from 10 companies and two counties rolled into Specialty Tire in Indiana Monday morning. Indiana Fire Association First Assistant Chief Ron Moreau described the scene: "Lots of heavy black smoke." The picture from Indiana Fire Association shows the issue from the outside. Visibility inside the nearly 100-year-old building was a problem, as was what was once stored there. "You have a facility like this, you have a lot of different chemicals, products, gases that are involved," says Moreau. "When we got here, the transformer was burning, the breakers were blowing — lots of excitement with electric." As the fire burned inside, firefighters on the cement roof were essentially standing on something akin to a giant baking stone. KDKA-TV CBS 2 PITTSBURGH U.S. remains in 1st wave of pandemic as experts raise concern for several states With half of US states reporting a rise in new cases, one expert warns of ‘danger signs' in some parts of the US. After weeks of many Americans failing to heed face mask and social distancing guidelines, health officials in some states are reporting an increase in younger populations testing positive — saying those individuals are often asymptomatic but could be infecting others. And public health measures meant to control infection aren't quite up to speed — a problem the country has consistently faced in past months. "As you reopen … you expect to see more cases. But what we're hearing, in terms of the public health model — of testing people, through contact tracing, and then isolation and quarantine — it doesn't sound like it's working as well as it really needs to," says former acting director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Richard Besser. KTLA-TV 5 CW LOS ANGELES University of Notre Dame Study: Gear treated with ‘forever chemicals' poses risk to firefighters Firefighters face occupational hazards on a daily basis. Now, new research shows they face additional risk just by gearing up. Fabric used for firefighter turnout gear tested positive for the presence of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), according to the study published in Environmental Science and Technology Letters, led by Graham Peaslee, professor of physics at the University of Notre Dame. Peaslee embarked on a more extensive study, after initial tests on gear samples showed significantly high levels of fluorine. "When we ran our initial tests, the fluorine content was so high, there was little question as to whether or not we'd find PFAS in a larger sample of gear," said Peaslee. "Our primary concern — as is always the case when it comes to these particular chemicals — became how much of it is coming off the gear and getting into the environment?" UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME NEWS 'Chicago Fire' Has an Active Chicago Firefighter in the Cast Chicago Fire showcases the intense and dangerous situations which firefighters deal with every day, and the crew wants it to be as realistic as possible. They use some fantastic special effects and pyrotechnics, which as amazing as they look, still isn't real enough. In addition, this drama goes above and beyond by using real life firefighters in the show. NBC‘s Chicago Fire follows the lives and work of the windy city's most dedicated heroes- Firefighters. The show uses dramatic reenactments, heartfelt relationships, and awesome special effects to tell the story of Chicago's firefighters and paramedics, who risk their lives every day in the line of duty. The show focuses on Firehouse 51 and its crew, who treat each other more like family than co-workers. Chicago Fire has been on the air for eight seasons, with season nine expected to premiere this fall. The main cast of Chicago Fire are actors, but they still had to go through plenty of professional firefighter training. SHOWBIZ CHEATSHEET Column: The expanding use of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic There has been quite a bit of discussion about how telehealth could be utilized during a public health emergency or more commonly during medical care. But only 1% of rural communities in the U.S. routinely use telemedicine and it is rarely utilized outside of emergency situations, such as natural disasters. Now, many physicians, nurses, ERs and EMS are utilizing telemedicine to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to conserve resources. In this article we'll examine some of the ways telehealth has been utilized during this pandemic and how it could be used going forward. Pre-COVID-19, there had been interest in telemedicine triage, which would decrease non-emergent ambulance transports. Often, transportation is a barrier to receiving healthcare, which means EMS become that transportation even when the medical problem itself is non-urgent. EMS1 PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
