| Houston Fire Department called to the same property twice in the same night before family's home burns to the ground Firefighters responded to a home in northwest Houston twice overnight after smoke and flames were reported. The fire happened in the 9700 block of Beckley in the Acres Homes community. The first time firefighters were there, they determined there was an electrical issue causing insultation to smoke in the attic. The power was shut off, and the family left for the night. Around 2:30 a.m. firefighters were called back to the home as massive flames shot through the roof. Thankfully, no one was home, and no serious injuries were reported. The home appears to be a complete loss, however. One firefighter suffered a minor injury to his shoulder, and he was checked out at the scene. As of 5:30 a.m. firefighters were still working to fully contain it. This was one of two major fires that the Houston Fire Department responded to overnight. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Firefighters rescue resident stuck in assisted living center fire in Harris County The Cy-Fair Fire Department was called to help evacuate a resident who was stuck in an assisted living center during a fire Tuesday morning in northwest Harris County. It happened in the 8500 block of Copperbrook Drive at the Autumn Grove Cottage Assisted Living facility around 7:30 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, eight of the residents had already been evacuated to safety by two assisted living facility staff members. Firefighters said they were able to rescue the ninth resident who was in a wheelchair. She was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The two staff members were also taken to the hospital as a precaution. "It was a smoke filled house," said Dennis O'Neal, who lives next door. "There was not any smoke coming through the roof, but when they opened the front door you could see the smoke billowing out the front door." KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON It's Been 1 Year Since The Watson Explosion In Houston; What's Being Done To Prevent More? It was an early Friday morning last January, in Houston's Westbranch neighborhood. Gilberto Mendoza Cruz was asleep when a ceiling collapsed on him. A nearby industrial warehouse, the Watson Grinding and Manufacturing facility, had exploded. Cruz went to the emergency room and was eventually released. He moved his wife and their two children into a hotel because their home was destroyed. Two weeks later Cruz died, his lawyer says, from those injuries. The explosion ended up damaging more than 470 homes and businesses, injuring at least 18 people and killing three. Down the street, Frank Peters said he was working on home repairs when he was thrown against a wall. "I was just convinced it was an atomic bomb," Peters said. "You know, dirty bomb or something — terrorism." HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA Mayor announces new group will study ways to improve Dallas Police and Fire Pension System Mayor Eric Johnson on Monday announced the formation of a study group that will develop recommendations to put the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System on a better path to solvency. The mayor asked Bill Quinn and Rob Walters to put together the group of financial and pension professionals outside of City Hall to study potential solutions. Quinn is the chairman of the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System Board of Trustees and formerly served as the chair of a task force that recommended a series of changes to shore up the city's Employees' Retirement Fund — the pension system for civilian city employees — in the mid-2000s under Mayor Laura Miller. Walters, who also served on the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System's Board of Trustees, is a partner at Gibson Dunn and the chairman of the Dallas Citizens Council. THE DALLAS WEEKLY Hill County: Excess Military Truck Provided For Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department Fleet Excess military vehicles fill the role of firefighting apparatus for many Texas emergency service providers. Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department received one of these trucks and converted the excess Stewart Stevenson into a firefighting machine. The conversion included the addition of a slip-on unit. "Lakeview VFD received an excess military truck through the Department of Defense Firefighter Property Program and a slip-on unit grant through Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program, both administered by Texas A&M Forest Service," said Texas A&M Forest Service Regional Fire Coordinator Matthew Schlaefer. "Having extra water will be a big asset to the department when responding to wildland fires." One of the stipulations for receiving the truck is to paint it a nonmilitary color. | Video shows moment New York firefighter knocked unconscious from falling AC unit An FDNY firefighter was knocked unconscious when an air conditioner fell from a window and struck him in the head while he was battling a Brooklyn blaze on Monday morning, sources said. The shocking incident took place outside a home in Bensonhurst and sent the smoke eater from Ladder 172 to the hospital where he was in serious condition, according to FDNY sources. The firefighter was among 106 members of the FDNY who fought the two-alarm blaze that broke out just before 9 a.m. at a house on 85th Street near 20th Avenue, authorities and sources said. Video obtained by The Post shows the moment the firefighter was pummeled by the window AC as he walked down the driveway of the two-story home. A loud crash can be heard in the video, before the AC unit strikes the firefighter, knocking him to the ground. Fellow bravest could be seen rushing to the man's aid, with one screaming, "medic!," according to the footage. NEW YORK POST Washington state provides $750K for new ‘floating fire engine' for South King Fire After 36 years of service, a new Maritime Emergency Response Vessel is in the works with the help of a $750,000 allocation from Washington state. Last week, South King Fire and Rescue announced the department received the final contract appropriating $750,000 from the 2020 Washington state operating budget to pay for a major portion of the new fire rescue boat. In the past, the department has applied for two federal funding grants in hopes of replacing the vessel, but was denied each time. The new boat is a "night and day difference" from the current vessel, and includes updated satellite navigation equipment among other technological advancements, according to Assistant Chief of Special Operations Dave Mataftin, who said the boat is essentially "a floating fire engine." The grant, along with designated funds from the department's 2021 budget, will be used to replace Marine 367 for a cost of nearly $1.3 million. FEDERAL WAY MIRROR - METERED SITE 4 firefighters injured in blaze at California retail building VIDEO: Four firefighters were injured including one with second-degree burns as crews Monday battled a fire at a commercial building in Chula Vista. Four workers also were inside the Action Footwear retail store in the 600 block of H Street, though all made it out safely on their own, according to the Chula Vista Fire Department. Crews responded to the scene just before 5:45 p.m., working against rain, blistering winds and lower temperatures as the evening progressed to get the fire under control. Three of the injured firefighters were transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center, Chula Vista Fire Department spokeswoman Capt. Linda D'Orsi said, adding that the status of the two of them was "mild." A fourth firefighter was hospitalized with an ankle injury. No other injuries have been reported. Gusts of wind, which crews say whipped up the flames, carried plumes of smoke high into the air, lowering visibility in the area along with the evening's rain conditions. KSWB-TV FOX 5 SAN DIEGO Neptune ambulances cleaned of COVID in minutes; first in New Jersey with new disinfecting system Minutes — and even seconds — can make a difference in a medical emergency. But the global pandemic has first aid services across the globe trying to figure out how to balance disinfecting for COVID-19 and quickly returning ambulances back to service. Neptune thinks it solved the problem after they became the first town in the country to equip its fleet with a system that drastically cuts down the time it takes to sanitize ambulances after calls for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. MEDS, short for Modular Electrostatic Disinfectant System, is a spraying system that mounts inside an ambulance, allowing the crew to disinfect the rear of the ambulance — where patients lie as rescue workers care for them as they go the hospital — with the turn of a key and the flip of a switch from the cab. Electrostatic systems charge the ions in the cleaning solution, which results in the droplets repelling each other and wrapping around surfaces being disinfected. ASBURY PARK PRESS Second vaccine shots postponed for Delaware first responders Delaware is hitting pause on giving the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to thousands of first responders in the state. The move affects an estimated 3,000 to 3,500 people, according to Delaware's Fire Prevention Commission. The men and women on the front lines are seeing high COVID-19 call volume and are concerned about when they'll be fully protected from the virus. "To be told a few days before you're supposed to get your second dose, it's a little disconcerting," says Robert Pappa, a Talleyville firefighter. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, Pappa, says his second dose vaccine appointment has been canceled. Thousands of other first responders in Delaware got the same alert. "A lot of us are experiencing a lot of burnout because of everything going on, so we saw this vaccine as kind of a relief from that," says Pappa.
