Amarillo Fire Department Chief Jeff Greenlee retiring after 27 years The Amarillo Fire Department announced Chief Jeff Greenlee is retiring this spring after serving 27 years at the department. Greenlee served as fire chief for eight years and was valedictorian of the Amarillo Fire Academy Class of 1993. During his time, he also served as AFD's district chief for the hazardous material program and the communications program. In 2012, former City Manager Jarrett Atkinson appointed Greenlee as chief after looking through potential candidates. It had been narrowed down to three internal candidates and another from outside of Amarillo. Under Greenlee's leadership, the department grew exponentially with positive changes. Part of it is because of the passing of Proposition 2 in 2016. Some of those improvements under Proposition 2 include constructing three new fire stations, upgrading equipment and gear, and technological advancements in training and staffing. KFDA-TV CBS 10 Magnolia fire chief, who worked in Australia, explains why it's so hard to contain the wildfires Dozens of firefighters from the United States arrived in Australia on Monday to help fight the increasingly devastating wildfires burning throughout that country. Officials there have called the fire conditions "catastrophic" and "unprecedented." More than one hundred fires have destroyed more than 14 million acres and thousands of homes and other buildings since September. At least two dozen people and an estimated nearly half a billion animals have also lost their lives in what Australians call "bushfires." "It's a horrible feeling because like all firefighters, the firefighters in Australia are doing their absolute best to contain the problem," said Magnolia Fire Chief Gary Vincent. Vincent worked as incident commander for the Tri-County wildfire, the largest in East Texas history. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Fire pole to be removed from old Fire Station 3 in Longview The city of Longview said the Longview Fire Department will remove a brass fire pole from the old Fire Station 3. According to the city, the removal will happen at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 13. at the fire station located at 610 Mobberly Ave. The pole will be showcased at the Longview Fire Department Training Facility until it is included in the construction of a new, two-story Station 7 at 2811 Gilmer Road, approved by voters as part of the 2018 bond election. The city said old Fire Station 3 was originally built in 1936 following a bond election in 1935. Fire Station 1 in downtown Longview currently maintains three working fire poles. KLTV's Jeff Chavez spoke with Longview Fire Marshal Kevin May about the history of the old fire station as well as the plans to recycle the pole inside. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER Wichita Falls firefighters find body in pond after responding to grass fire Wichita Falls officials are working to identify a body found Sunday morning while Wichita Falls Fire Department firefighters responded to a small grass fire at the Maplewood Pond. Fire Investigator Jared Burchett said fire fighters responded to a call about a grass fire about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3200 block of Lawrence Road behind Academy. Assistant Fire chief Donald Hughes said once the fire investigator arrived on scene, the incident was turned over to the Wichita Falls Police Department Burchett said firefighters found remains around the cattails in the pond while they put out the fire. Burchett said the fire and the body are unrelated. The fire began when a child was playing with a lighter that caught grass on fire, and Burchett said a citation was given. KFDX-TV NBC 3 & KJTL-TV FOX 18 Ata Bexar County Line Volunteer Fire Department gives military vehicle a makeover to help fight fires A volunteer firefighter department just got a new, but old set of wheels to help them respond to emergencies. The Ata Bexar County Line Volunteer Fire Department converted a 1994 Steward Stevenson 2.5-ton excess military vehicle into what they are calling a "firefighting machine." It's one of more than 700 military trucks getting re-outfitted to be transformed at no cost to volunteer fire departments throughout the country through the Department of Defense Firefighter Property Program. The program is run through Texas A&M Forest Service - all thanks to a $18,300 grant through the HB 2604 Rural Volunteer Fire Department Program. According to Texas A&M Forest Service, the project was a labor of love with volunteer firefighters pitching in. They also had donated paint to work with. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Arson investigates suspicious fire at San Antonio duplex with four previous calls for flames A home with which firefighters are familiar was the site of yet another fire Monday. Arson investigators called out to a duplex on the West Side on Simplicity Drive, near Marbach and Ingram roads. A San Antonio battalion chief at the scene said he knew of at least four reports of fires at the home. A person found at the scene also raised suspicions for investigators, who have dealt with him multiple times before, officials said. Neighbors said they've seen several people coming in and out of the duplex. No injuries were reported. Officials said the property is worth about $85,000 and had about $45,000 of damage. Firefighters in Massachusetts protest mayor's inauguration over blackout policy VIDEO: Firefighters in New Bedford protested the mayor's inauguration Monday night over the city's longstanding blackout policy. Fire station blackouts have been in effect since 2009 when the former mayor, Scott Lang, initiated the policy as a way to try and save money during the Great Recession. Through the policy, a different station is closed, or "blacked out", for a 24-hour period to cut back on staffing, therefore reducing costs. "We were in a fiscal apocalypse then. [Mayor Lang] had no choice," said Arthur Mello, of New Bedford Firefighters Local 841. However, now that the economy is in a better position, firefighters like Mello want to get rid of the blackouts. "The economy has changed, it's grown. But as it's grown, Mayor Mitchell has chosen to not only continue the blackouts, but to double down on them," said Mello. WLNE-TV ABC 6 Oregon state investigators knock fire department's readiness; City faces more than $10,000 in fines The city faces $10,800 in fines from the state for safety violations at the Warrenton Fire Department. The state Occupational Safety and Health Administration initiated an investigation after anonymous complaints. It fined the city $7,500 for not ensuring a proper respiratory protection program, $2,100 for not ensuring employees wore the right protective equipment, $420 for improper training, $420 for not maintaining a safety committee, $180 for a lack of equipment inspections and $180 for not keeping a hazard communication program. Tim Demers, the former fire chief, resigned amid the investigation. The findings come shortly after the city hired Brian Alsbury, the former deputy fire chief and volunteer, to replace Demers. Investigators specifically took issue with the city's use of the term "combat firefighter" for volunteers to keep them engaged while they completed the required training to combat structure fires. THE DAILY ASTORIAN Sex offender accused of showing up to emergency scenes in South Carolina pretending to be firefighter VIDEO: York police said a registered sex offender has been arrested after showing up to emergency scenes pretending to be a firefighter. Robert Shipman, 29, was arrested Saturday after officers said he blocked the roadway at a serious accident on East Jefferson Street and had red lights on his truck. Officials said Shipman arrived before they did and had already blocked the street with his pickup truck. Firefighters lost time getting to the injured victims because they had to get around him first. York Fire Chief Domenic Manera told Channel 9's South Carolina bureau reporter Greg Suskin that he met Shipman face to face at another accident scene two days earlier. Police said Shipman was on East Liberty Street where a car had run into a brick wall in front of the Lowe's store, seriously injuring the driver. WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE Sound the alarm: A fire engine food truck in Washington state brings pizza to the people Engine 72 used to put out fires in North Olympia. Now one rages inside of it, guaranteed to cook a fresh pizza in two minutes. Christopher and Janene Murray are the owners of Murray's Rustic Pie, a wood-fired pizza operation built in a converted fire engine. The mobile food truck has been in commission for the pizza business since last summer, traveling to farmers markets, breweries, community events — even weddings — when they're not serving about 30 pies a day from the driveway of the Murray home at 536 NE C St. The two are hardly new to pizza though. Or, for that matter, vehicular ovens. Before this, Chris Murray and a friend built a 3-foot oven in the back end of a '77 Datsun pickup and hauled it all over Washington and Oregon to serve wood-fired pizzas at events. WALLA WALLA UNION-BULLETIN - METERED SITE Ohio: City, firefighters union bicker over civil suit The city contends the firefighters union shouldn't be permitted to intervene in a civil lawsuit filed by a state board seeking an injunction to stop Youngstown from reducing the number of battalion chiefs. It also argues in a Monday filing that the State Employment Relations Board, which filed the lawsuit Dec. 18 against the city, isn't entitled to seek an injunction in this matter. In the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court filing, Jeffrey Moliterno, the city's senior assistant law director, wrote the union's request to intervene should be denied because its filing was "procedurally deficient as it does not contain a pleading of any form." Moliterno wrote: "Although the union has supported its memorandum with arguments for why it should be entitled to intervene, it has not set forth its claim or defense for which intervention is sought. Thus, the union's motion to intervene must (be) denied. This is particularly so because of the very tight briefing schedule in this matter." THE VINDICATOR PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
