Fire destroys house in Corpus Christi PHOTO/VIDEO: The cause of a fire that engulfed a house overnight in Flour Bluff is under investigation as fire crews returned to the scene this morning to put out hot spots. The house, which was on Caribbean Dr. near Roscher Rd., could be seen with heavy flames coming from the roof in a Facebook post by the Flour Bluff Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters has the flames under control about 30 minutes after arriving. The home was vacant and no injuries were reported, officials said. There was electricity running to the house but investigators are on-scene Tuesday to determine the exact cause of the fire. The owners of the home have been notified. The house is a complete loss, officials said. Fire crews were also back on the scene Tuesday to put out hot spots. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI La Joya Fire Department receives $1.2 million to upgrade fire station District 28 U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar recently awarded the La Joya Volunteer Fire Department $1.275 million in funds. The funds will go towards upgrading their fire station. La Joya FD Fire Captain Gilbert Salinas told ValleyCentral the funding came as a surprise but was long overdue. The fire station has been up and running for 32 years and since the initial opening of the building, has not been renovated or upgraded at all, according to Assistant Fire Chief Alvin Patina. Patina added they are looking to add a training room for in-house training, new dorms for males and females, and more adequate storage for their equipment. The current station only allows for firefighters to keep their gear outside in their bays which is not under climate control. This along with other failed building requirements that do not meet building code standards. KVEO-TV NBC/CBS 23 BROWNSVILLE Athens Fire Department seeks grant to address cancer concerns The Athens City Council approved a resolution on Monday to allow the Fire Department to apply for a grant to purchase equipment that would lessen the cancer risk for its personnel. The action authorizes Fire Chief Russell Marshall to submit an application for funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The funds would be used for the purchase and turn-key installation of Source Capture Exhaust Systems to be located at Central Fire Station and Station 2 in North Athens. Marshall said the World Health Organization and others have classified engine exhaust increases the risk of lung cancer. "Our firefighters are exposed to dangerous levels of exhaust at both stations due to the lack of source capture exhaust removal systems," Marshall said. WEATHERFORD DEMOCRAT Mesquite School Trains Student First Responders While in High School VIDEO: A man fell inside his bathroom, hit his head, and called 911. Fire crews got there first to begin providing medical help as paramedics raced to the scene. The firefighters were high schoolers and so were the paramedics in this life-like scenario. It's all part of two hands-on programs at Vanguard High School in Mesquite. "It's kinda crazy," said Leslie Luna, a student captain in the fire program. "I got into this because I have a passion to help people and maybe people don't like to help people, you have to have a big heart to put yourself out there." It's not a lifelong dream for Luna or following in someone's footsteps. She just thought it was cool, was something that spoke to her, and now she's on track to graduate high school with an associate's degree in firefighting. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Laredo Fire Department receives new autopulse equipment Earlier this month the city and Laredo Fire Department approved the purchase of some equipment that will automatically provide continuous CPR, a device that can make all the difference during a life-or-death situation. The autopulse gives continuous CPR wherever a patient has been taken for medical treatment, but its purpose is clear, to help a patient survive especially those who suffers cardiac arrest. Ricardo Oliva with the fire department says these cases will be cardiac arrest patients in which the heart just stops beating. So this device what it does it will simulate heart beating by compressing the chest and pumping the blood and giving that circulation that they need." For the first time, the Laredo Fire Department will receive this device and appropriate training next year. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC/TELEMUNDO 8 LAREDO Authorities investigating fire at Harlingen restaurant VIDEO: Authorities are investigating a fire at Stefano's Brooklyn Pizza in Harlingen, Monday morning. According to Harlingen fire Chief Rafael Balderas, firefighters responded to the restaurant at about 5 a.m. Monday after receiving a call for an activated alarm. When crews arrived, they noticed smoke inside and broke through one of the doors. "We did find a big fire inside the building and so we started fighting the fire and then it got too intense that we got into defensive mode, which is what we're doing right now," Balderas said at the scene. The owner of the restaurant tells Channel 5 News that the restaurant was more than just the food, but also the environment that the staff created for his guests. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injures were reported. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Investigation, lawsuit, rebuilding: What to know one year after Nashville Christmas bombing PHOTOS: A bomb exploded on Nashville's historic Second Avenue in the early morning of Dec. 25, 2020. The blast damaged 65 buildings and displaced dozens of businesses and residents in a city already weary from a year marred by the COVID-19 pandemic and deadly tornadoes. After a year of investigation, painstaking demolition and community collaboration, the shells of the most-damaged buildings stand largely cleared of debris and ready for the 200-year-old street's next evolution. Multiple local, state and federal agencies investigated the explosion, ultimately identifying 63-year-old Anthony Quinn Warner as the bomber. Warner packed his RV with explosives and at 1:22 a.m. parked the vehicle in front of an AT&T switch facility, according to investigators. TENNESSEAN 'Christmas miracle' in South Carolina: Mother of Charleston 9 firefighter honored for son's sacrifice VIDEO/PHOTOS: Ann Mulkey's son Louis was one of the Charleston 9 firefighters. When Powell Roofing got a call from Mulkey, they decided to team up with some local businesses to give her a free roof. "Oh my gosh. I've never had anything like this happen to me, to this magnitude. And to do it because of Louis, you know, just made it that much more special," said Ann Mulkey. In June, Mulkey called Powell roofing for an estimate to get a brand new roof. It was pricey, so she decided to save for the project. "It's very important to get this roof done. I've been waiting to get it done for years and you know I've had patches and patches fixed. But I couldn't really do a full roof," she said. When Mulkey was ready to pay for the roof, she was told she didn't have to. WCIV-TV ABC 36 CHARLESTON Generational firefighters often anchor local stations in Pennsylvania Firefighting is in the blood of the Fanella family, stretching back four generations in Mount Carmel Township. Robert B. Fanella died at age 88 in 2014. His son Robert "Bob" Joseph Fanella, 63, his grandson Robert "Bobby" James Fanella, 40, and his great-grandson Ethan Robert Fanella, 19, are volunteer firefighters for the Atlas Fire Company and Natalie Fire Company in Mount Carmel Township. "It makes me proud," said Bob Fanella about his son and grandson becoming firefighters. Bob Fanella doesn't do any interior work anymore due to health reasons, but he said he is proud to see his son and grandson working together and entering buildings as father and son. The late Fanella was the first firefighter in the family. When he returned home from World War II, he joined the fire company and helped build the current building in the 1970s. THE DAILY ITEM PHOTOS: Every San Francisco Fire Station That's Decked Out for the Holiday Decorations Competition In 2020, San Francisco fire stations revived a tradition from grandma and granddad's day, after a report from the Chronicle sounded the siren to bring back the SF fire station holiday decorations contest. That contest was scuttled in 1951 over some prudish backlash that the fire departments were spending more than their allotted $50 per station on decorations, but the Chronicle's report mustered up enough holiday cheer that the SF Fire Department decided to pull all the St. Nick stops again. The holiday decorations contest is bigger and better than ever in 2021, so SFist tromped out to all 44 San Francisco fire stations to get pictures and video of every single display. As of the fire department's most recent announcement, there are only 12 stations "officially entered" in the contest (The top three winners get $3,000, $2,000 or $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice). SFIST Omicron becomes the dominant COVID variant in the U.S., accounting for 73% of new infections The highly transmissible Omicron variant is now dominant in the United States, according to new data released by the CDC on Monday. The variant now makes up more than 73% of new infections, a nearly six-fold increase compared to the week before. Omicron makes up the highest share of new cases in the South, Central Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and the New York area. The steep rise of the Omicron variant comes as cases surge across the country, particularly in New York, which is reporting one in 10 new cases nationally. On Monday, the state reported its highest number of daily infections for the fourth consecutive day, and New York City is now averaging more daily infections since the pandemic began. But hospitalizations both in the city and statewide have yet to near pandemic records.
