Long-time Harris County Paramedic Dies After Two-month Battle With COVID-19 Houston and Katy-area firefighters are mourning the loss of one of their own after paramedic Gordon Baker died after battling COVID-19 for two months. Baker, who worked with the Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department, spent 30 years as a paramedic. The loss of Baker was described as immeasurable and he was said to be a mentor to new paramedics and EMTs. Harris County ESD 48 Fire Department posted this touching message on their Facebook page on the passing of Baker: "This is not the news we were hoping to share with you all today. Paramedic Gordon Baker has lost his courageous two-month battle with COVID. Gordon touched countless lives throughout his almost 30-year career, as a caregiver, a mentor and a friend. Gordon's clinical skill and compassion for his patients is unmatched as he treated every patient as he would his family. … Gordon, your loss is immeasurable but now is your time to rest and be free from sickness and pain. We'll proudly take it from here…" KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Houston Fire Department firefighters say staffing issues led to delayed response in fatal crash Houston firefighters from Station 68 took to social media Sunday saying staffing shortages led to a delay in response to a fatal car crash in southwest Houston. In a Facebook post, a message reads, "Fatal motor vehicle incident requiring vehicle extrication at 59 & Beechnut. Though the incident is located in Fire Station 68's territory, with Ladder 68 (which is equipped with extrication tools) currently out of service due to lack of staffing, units on scene had to wait additional time for the arrival of Rescue 10 (located at Bellaire & Corporate) and Ladder 69 (located at Beltway 8 & Briar Forest) in order to begin extrication procedures." "That means that the rescue equipment that should be there in five to six minutes could take 12 to 15 minutes," said Marty Lancton, president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Update: Irving firefighter communicating in ICU after being hit by drunk driver An Irving firefighter remains in the ICU with a traumatic brain injury after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way on State Highway 183. Aaron Donohue, 30, was working a crash scene when he was hit Sunday and tossed 50 feet before landing on the pavement. Fire officials spoke Monday about Donohue's status. "He's able to communicate with real simple signs," said Irving Fire Chief Victor Conley. "To what degree we do not know yet. I will say there has been some slow but significant improvements and by the hand of God there was not one single broken bone in firefighter Donohue." Donohue was sweeping debris from a five-car accident caused police say by an alleged drunk driver. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Houston officials prepare vaccine distribution plans ahead of potential FDA approval Amid rising COVID-19 case counts in Houston, city officials are laying the groundwork for distributing the first shipments of vaccines available in the U.S., which could be approved as soon as Dec. 9. At a Dec. 7 press conference, Houston Fire Department Chief Sam Peña said he submitted a list of 1,500 fire department employees, mainly paramedics, to leaders within the Houston Methodist hospital system, which will receive the first shipments. Paramedics are among the first people eligible to receive doses of the vaccine under Gov. Greg Abbott's guidelines, Peña said. HFD personnel will be encouraged to get the vaccine; however, it will not be required by the department, Peña said, because officials are not allowed to mandate vaccinations that were approved through an emergency-use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration. COMMUNITY IMPACT - LAKE HOUSTON, HUMBLE, AND KINGWOOD Irion County VFD enhances firefighting capabilities Firefighters with the Irion County Volunteer Fire Department have a new weapon in their efforts to contain and extinguish structural and wildland fires after the organization recently refurbished a former military vehicle. The vehicle, a former troop transport used by the U.S. military, has been outfitted with equipment designed to augment the existing fleet in the department and extend their firefighting capabilities. Irion County VFD Mertzon chief Bill Taylor said the addition of the new vehicle should allow the department to provide enhanced fire suppression services to the community and surrounding area. "We've been needing another truck to strengthen our fleet," Taylor said. "Funds have been harder and harder to get. So, we decided to go out and try to get a grant through the Forest Service. This vehicle is Department of Defense retired military equipment. Upon receiving the grant, you have 190 days to convert it into an emergency use vehicle. Part of that is modifying it for that use." GO SAN ANGELO/SAN ANGELO STANDARD TIMES Waco Fire creates 'Holiday Cheer Fire Truck' to spread Christmas joy The Waco Fire Department is spreading Christmas cheer this holiday season by driving a decorated fire truck through local neighborhoods and playing Christmas carols. A team of firefighters and their wives covered an engine in the department's reserve with colored Christmas lights, wreaths and an inflatable Santa Claus. "This is about the community," Waco Fire Lt. Keith Guillory said. :This is about the fire department reaching out to the community, the city reaching out to the community to meet that need and bring that cheer to everyone in the city." The truck rolls out from Waco Fire Station One every night, weather permitting, around 6 p.m. It then travels up and down the streets of a pair of Waco neighborhoods spreading Christmas joy. Guillory says the department hopes to visit every neighborhood in Waco twice this holiday season. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Over half of New York City firefighters would refuse COVID-19 vaccine, survey finds Just weeks before a COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be made available to U.S. medical workers and first responders, a firefighters' union internal survey taken by members of the country's largest fire department shows that more than 50% say they would not take it, mirroring what appears to be a nationwide hesitancy to get the shot. The Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) survey of 2,000 members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) showed that 55% of participants said they would not bother to get inoculated. Andrew Ansbro, president of the UFA, said the results of the survey are concerning in light of 200 members of the fire department currently being out sick with coronavirus. "As a union, we are encouraging our members to get the vaccine, but we are defending that right to make that choice," Ansbro said at a news conference Sunday. ABC NEWS Dramatic Video Captures 4 Suspects in Fatal Shooting of Retired Chicago Firefighter The Chicago Police Department released stunning surveillance footage Monday showing the moments leading up to and following the fatal shooting of a retired fire lieutenant in the city's Beverly Woods neighborhood. Dwain Williams, 65, was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking on Thursday after leaving a gourmet popcorn shop in the 11700 block of South Western Avenue. As Williams left the shop, he was confronted by multiple individuals who jumped out of a car and began firing in his direction. Williams shielded himself with his SUV, which was decorated with a red Rudolph nose and reindeer antlers, as he returned fire at the suspects. The veteran firefighter, who served on the Chicago Fire Department for 28 years, sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO 1 hurt when bullets hit cars, fire truck in North Carolina VIDEO: One person was taken to the hospital after police said someone opened fire Monday morning in southwest Charlotte, hitting a fire truck and two other vehicles. The shots rang out around 9:20 a.m. close to a 7-Eleven near the intersection of Clanton Road and Barringer Drive. Police said bullets hit a fire truck but no CFD firefighters were injured. A person in one of the other vehicles that were hit by gunfire, a Jeep Cherokee, had to be taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound but police said they would survive. WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE PTSD workers' compensation support for Wisconsin first responders remains out of reach In what has been arguably the toughest year in recent history for first responders, access to care for post-traumatic stress disorder remains out of reach through the state's workers' compensation law. Back in February, the I-Team reported on a bill in Madison that would include PTSD as a workplace injury for firefighters and police officers. But since then the plan has stalled in the Legislature, another setback caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Joe Flick, a Milwaukee firefighter and the president of Ignite the Spirit Milwaukee, reminds us that the pandemic doesn't stop first responders from answering the call. "We're still going to all the fires and the car accidents and you know all the trauma that we see," Flick said. "But now, the call volume is much higher as well." Flick said for many of his fellow firefighters, PTSD doesn't typically come from one specific scene. Instead, it builds call after call. WTMJ-TV NBC 4 MILWAUKEE Mississippi governor's mansion decorations pay tribute to first responders, front-line workers VIDEO: The governor's mansion is now decorated for the holidays and is open to a limited audience over the next several days. "I looked at the decorations at the mansion and I thought, 'This is Mississippi's home and I just helped decorate it.' Wow, what an honor," decorator Trina Dendy said. The mansion is filled with traditional Christmas decor including eight Christmas trees and over 30 wreaths. The displays include a gingerbread village and several ornaments created by Mississippians that pay tribute to COVID-19 front-line workers and first responders. "They're made by local artists, and some of the time put into those is just amazing," Dendy said. "They're beautiful: representing the firemen, the policemen, the nurses, the doctors." Those visiting the mansion are encouraged to leave a thank you note for first responders, which will then be delivered by Santa right before Christmas. WAPT-TV ABC 16 JACKSON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
