Longview Fire Department: One dead after house fire The Longview Fire Department is investigating a fatal house fire that happened early Tuesday morning in the 400 block of Davis Street. Firefighters responded to the house shortly before 5 a.m. Flames were coming from the windows, doors and the backside of the house when they arrived, according to Longview Fire Marshal Kevin May. One person was found dead inside the house. "At this time, the only information that we have is the one victim inside," May said. "Because it was a fatality, we are getting some extra resources in. We've asked for help from the Gregg County Fire Marshal's Office as well as the police department's investigation unit. That way we have more eyes on the scene and we're able to hopefully determine what caused this fire quicker." KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER 14 adults, 3 children displaced by San Antonio fire sparked by lightning PHOTO: Eight families have been displaced from their homes on the Northeast Side due to a fire that broke out overnight as the result of a lightning strike. San Antonio firefighters say the fire already had a headstart and was burning through the roof of the building at Villa Rodriguez when they arrived after 2 a.m. Tuesday. The believe lightning hit the building, located in the 3400 block of Salado Creek Drive. The fire then spread through the roof, destroying or damaging all of the apartments in that building. Firefighters say there were 14 adults and 3 children who were living in the eight units that were affected. Most heard either the lightning strike or smoke detectors go off and escaped the fire on their own, firefighters said. Others, however, slept through it all and were alerted to the fire by firefighters and police officers pounding on their doors. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Inside the Smith County Joint Emergency Operations Center during COVID-19 response "We're the conductors of the orchestra if you will," said Tyler Fire Chief David Coble. Each weekday, Smith County leaders come to their "orchestra pit" at Tyler Fire Station #1 for the daily Joint Emergency Operations Center meeting. "All entities involved can come to one location and read off the same sheet of music, if you will," Coble said. Government leaders come here to learn the latest on COVID-19 in Smith County and then respond with decisions. The day starts with a general meeting that includes not only the 20 EOC members who are physically present, but others on the phone. "We have all the hospitals on the line, Tyler ISD, and other entities that are affected by COVID-19 and how their operations have changed over time and we find out how to best coordinate our efforts to meet what the community needs," Coble said. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER One person dead after SE Austin RV fire At least one person is dead after a fire in a Southeast Austin RV Sunday evening. Travis County Fire Rescue ESD 11 and the Austin Fire Department were called to the scene at Bluff Springs and Slaughter Lane before 6:25 p.m. The fire was knocked down around 6:30 p.m. Officials say they responded to an RV and two vehicles on fire. Upon arriving, crews reported a death. The investigation is ongoing, and being conducted by the Travis County Fire Marshal and Travis County Sheriff's Office. A Travis County Sheriff's Office spokesperson says their investigation is in the very early stages because they have to wait for the fire investigators to finish their part first. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN San Antonio Fire Department: Family of four loses home in massive fire on West Side A family of four is now without a home after it became engulfed in flames Sunday night. Firefighters said the flames were already through the roof when they arrived on scene. The homeowner was watching a movie on an iPad on the back porch when they noticed it started to get hot to the touch. According to firefighters, the homeowner noticed something was wrong with the electrical, set the iPad down, went inside and came back out and saw the flames. The battalion chief said the structure was unsafe to send firefighters inside to fight the flames, as the walls were "leaning out left and right," so they are doing aerial attacks and plan to be on scene all night. Three cats are also missing from the home. The house was deemed a total loss and the American Red Cross is assisting the family. No injuries were reported and arson is investigating. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Resident escapes second story of burning Jefferson County house Firefighters battled flames at a house near Hillebrandt Bayou early Monday morning. The fire started around 1 a.m. Monday, April 27 near Humble Camp Road in Jefferson County, Jefferson County ESD #4 said in a Facebook post. First responders found a two story house with visible flames, firefighters said. One person inside escaped from the second story of the home while police and firefighters tried to get into the residence. No one was injured in the fire, and the cause remains under investigation. Hamshire Volunteer Fire Department and Jefferson County ESD #3 in China and Nome also helped to put out the blaze. KBMT-TV ABC 12 PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

What's Cooking? Face Mask Decontamination via Rice Cookers to Ward Off COVID-19 Medical investigators throughout the world are cooking up ideas that will hopefully put an end to COVID-19, sparing thousands of lives while bringing our old way of life back. (Maybe.) Count among them, investigators with the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, and the ideas they're cooking up come right from the kitchen. In a pre-print article in the American Journal of Infection Control, the investigators found that rice cookers—an appliance found in kitchens all over the world—can decontaminate cloth masks, and they urge that further studies be conducted to see if the rice cookers could also decontaminate surgical and N95 masks as well. "Given the recommendation that cloth face masks be worn in public settings, steam treatment using these readily available kitchen items could provide safe and effective decontamination of cloth masks," the investigators conclude. One of the questions investigators wanted to answer: Which is better at decontaminating masks, moist or dry heat? INFECTION CONTROL TODAY New COVID-19 test to help screen first responders in Arizona For the first time, a special type of COVID-19 test is available for first responders. "First responders wake up every single day, and they are going out to communities and not knowing where they might be getting exposure to COVID-19," Christine Wiggs, with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, said. "We believe that providing them with antibody tests to understand whether they've been recently exposed is an important first step." Monday morning, in a joint effort, first responders from across the Valley got tested to see if they've been exposed to COVID-19. "This is really important to us," P.J. Dean, United Phoenix Firefighters Association. "We had our members express a large amount of interest in obtaining this test." KASW-CW6 & KTVK-3TV (AZFAMILY.COM) Louisiana security company uses technology to help stop spread of COVID-19 Acadian Total Security is using existing technology in a new way to help stop the spread of coronavirus as businesses look to reopen. "Thermal cameras have been used for quite a while. I'll just give an example: a chemical plant. We've had cameras on a boiler where you want them to run at a certain temperature so you set a parameter saying 'if it reaches this temperature, I need to be alerted right away because something could be blowing soon if it's too hot," Jason Brown, Director of Sales, said. Now, in the age of coronavirus, cities and businesses are looking to reopen. Brown said thermographic cameras can be a tool to help them monitor their employees and customers' health. "It allows you to have, for instance, 14 people could be walking in through the door and it would actually have all 14 people's temperatures across. It will alert you which people you need to pull to the side. KPLC-TV NBC/CW+ 7 LAKE CHARLES Dallas one of 14 international cities with Lime's new COVID-19 scooter program Lime, the scooter company, is rolling out a new scooter service designed to help health care workers and first responders in the coronavirus pandemic. That includes Dallas and Austin, plus Baltimore, Nashville, Oklahoma City, and Salt Lake City, but also Paris, Cologne, and Tel Aviv. We're so international. A release notes that the pandemic has made transportation more difficult, and Lime scooters are the perfect ride if you're trying to social distance. "Lime is proud to partner with cities to provide scooters as an essential transportation option to reliably get frontline workers and residents where they need to go," says David Spielfogel, Lime's Chief Policy Officer in a statement. "We remain committed to the cities we love and serve, and we recognize the critical role of micromobility in serving transportation needs now and as we emerge from this crisis." CULTURE MAP DALLAS Vermont releases town-by-town breakdown of coronavirus cases; New Hampshire notifying first responders of cases The bulk of the diagnosed COVID-19 cases in Vermont are clustered in the Burlington area, home to some of the long-term care facilities that have seen outbreaks, but Hartford and Woodstock have also seen a notable number of cases. The Vermont Department of Health on Monday released a town-by-town breakdown that showed Hartford had 10 COVID-19 cases and Woodstock 7. Vermont has had 855 diagnosed cases as of Monday, and Burlington led the town-by-town breakdown, which was from weekend data, with 157 COVID-19 cases, followed by Essex, 47, Swanton, 44, Colchester, 38, and South Burlington, 37. State officials said residents of a long-term care facility or inmates at a correctional facility are counted in the town where the facility is located when they were tested, which would account for the high number in Swanton.
