Governor ‘confident' about supply numbers for Texas healthcare workers, first responders Gov. Greg Abbott says more supplies are coming to healthcare workers and first responders in Texas amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and he's confident about the state's supply. Doctors and nurses have sounded the alarm repeatedly the past few weeks as the number of cases continue to grow, but Abbott said the state has distributed numerous PPE items and continues to acquire more. "I feel more confident now than I ever have with regard to access to PPE supplies," Abbott said during a Monday news conference. Officials said more than 1.6 million masks had been distributed in the past week to healthcare workers and first responders in Texas, along with 2.7 million gloves, nearly 210,000 face shields, nearly 170,000 gowns and 7,500 coveralls. KDFW FOX 4 NEWS DALLAS Dallas Fire-Rescue investigates cause of elementary school fire There were no injuries reported at a fire at C.A. Elementary School Monday night, but Dallas Fire-Rescue workers are still looking for witnesses or clues to find out how the fire started. Dallas Fire-Rescue was called to the school at 6:18 p.m. after a security officer heard an alarm go off at the school, officials said. Firefighters found smoke coming from the second floor of the school. They quickly extinguished a small fire on the second floor of the school, which had caused minimal damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS - FORT WORTH COVID-19 testing site opened in Jacinto City for seniors and 1st responders A mobile COVID-19 testing site for seniors and first responders opened today in Jacinto City. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee helped launch the site located at the Jacinto City Community Center at 1025 Oates Rd. United Memorial Medical Center are doing the tests. "Our senior citizens and first responders are extremely vulnerable to this devastating virus and we must take extra measures to protect them. I am dedicated to bringing this life-saving effort to my constituents," Lee said ahead of the opening. This the latest testing site to open in the Houston area. Last week, testing began at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land. Testing at the venue runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, and on Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "This invisible disease, this powerful disease called the coronavirus that now has taken 3,000 American lives," Lee stated last week during the site's opening. "I believe in the last reports that it will certainly surge past 9/11. It will be more than 9/11." KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Donna City Council approves hazard pay for police, firefighters Across the country, as first responders working the front lines of pandemic response face heightened risk of contracting COVID-19 themselves, officials in one Rio Grande Valley city have taken that risk into account and have approved giving those first responders hazard pay. The Donna City Council unanimously approved temporary hazard pay for police officers and firefighters during an emergency meeting Friday. The council also amended an emergency executive order, extending it for an additional 30 days and tightening restrictions on residents. Donna will offer the hazard pay to 29 patrol officers and three firefighters for a period of six weeks, with an option to renew the special pay for another six weeks. Each of them will receive an additional $700 per month, the council decided. BROWNSVILLE HERALD Two Houston big rigs burn while parked at a storage lot Two 18-wheeler trucks burned almost to the ground while parked at a storage lot in Houston early Sunday morning. Houston firefighters responded to the fire around 5:00 a.m. at a storage lot at Little York and Mesa on the Northeast side of town. HFD Arson will be investigating the fire. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Firefighters and police officers volunteer their time to keep shelves stocked in Seguina Usually, the call for help comes in rather than out. But a couple of weeks ago, Seguin Fire Inspector Shannon Billings knew his friends at Walmart could use a hand in the middle of this pandemic. He reached out to the general manager to see what they needed. "Whatever we have going on, they're the first ones to donate or hand it out to us. I asked if there was anything we could do to help them since they're always helping us, " Billings said. "And she's like, 'well actually, yes, we have trucks coming in tomorrow if any of your guys are available." Billings talked to his fire chief and they got a crew together. On their day off, firefighters stopped by Walmart to help employees unload 18-wheelers and restock shelves. "They really are the true heroes. They're the ones keeping shelves stocked, keeping food out there for people. I mean those guys work and they work hard," Billings said. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

IAFF Union official: 5,000 firefighters under quarantine nationally At least 5,000 firefighters across the U.S. are under quarantine because of the coronavirus, an official with the International Association of Fire Fighters union told Hill.TV on Monday. Jim Brinkley, the union's assistant to general president of technical assistance, said on Hill.TV's "Rising" that the number is likely higher due to "severe underreporting." Brinkley said only 500 of the 3,400 fire departments in the union are reporting coronavirus numbers to the union. Among those 500 departments, 5,000 firefighters are in quarantine, 3,000 are in isolation and 700 have tested positive for the coronavirus, Brinkley said. "This is not something that's just isolated to one area. I think the news has been really focused on what's happening in New York and New Jersey and that's tragic ... but we're nearly 90 days into this," he said. THE HILL Related: Tracking tool shows fire departments with positive COVID-19 tests The International Association of Fire Fighters has released a tracking tool that shows which fire departments have reported exposure to COVID-19 or have had employees test positive with the virus. Firefighters respond to patients who could be infected with coronavirus every day. "The same way we do going into a fire while people are running out of it, we are running into people's homes who may have contracted coronavirus," said Tom Malone, president of the Memphis Fire Fighters Association. Malone reports 12 Memphis firefighters have tested positive for COVID-19 so far. Nearly 200 others have had to be quarantined or isolated after being exposed to family, friends or other firefighters who had the virus. Malone said no firefighters tested positive after patient contact. According to Malone, the Department is still fully staffed. WMC-TV NBC 5 MEMPHIS Pennsylvania county fire departments using gravity-fed paint sprayers for sanitizing An innovative way of spray sanitizing is being put to good use by local emergency departments and Lawrence County Housing Authority apartment units during the coronavirus epidemic. They have the Shenango Area Fire District and the New Castle Fire Department to thank for the extra layers of protection, using the devices they built that are being used to disinfect surroundings. The idea came to assistant Shenango chief Brandon Rishel, who saw on the television news that another fire department in the Pittsburgh area had retrofitted paint sprayers into disinfectant sprayers. "Another fire department was using one, and I copied their idea," Rishel said. The two departments bought some paint sprayers, got the air chucks out of their used and expired department air packs and assembled them. To date, they have made about 20 of the sprayers. Rishel made at least eight of them. NEW CASTLE NEWS City in Washington considers wage reductions as it deals with financial fallout from coronavirus City governments are facing a difficult reality right now as the coronavirus pandemic has led to a revenue shortfall. In Tukwila, wage cuts are being considered. According to Rachel Bianchi, Tukwila's Deputy City Administrator, no decisions about wage reductions have been made yet. However, the firefighters union said they have already seen reduced staffing levels and they call it unacceptable. Lois Keller knows about the stresses that have been piling up because her husband, Levi, is a Tukwila firefighter. "They've been doing this job for years with a certain amount of staffing and now they got to figure out how to do their job in a pandemic with more asked of them, with less people," said Keller. "My husband still goes to work so we're still on that same schedule. I'm still at home with the kids," she added. What is different is spelled out in a five-page memo. KING-TV NBC 5 SEATTLE ‘Not aggressive enough': Healthcare, first responder unions urge DC mayor to change approach on coronavirus testing A coalition of unions representing healthcare workers and first responders is calling on the D.C. government to take a more aggressive approach on coronavirus testing. The organizations fear doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare workers will be unable to treat patients if too many of them get sick. The organizations, which include the D.C. Nurses Association (DCNA), D.C. Firefighters Association, D.C. Police Union and more, want the city to change two main areas in its testing guidelines. First, representatives want healthcare professionals who encounter patients who test positive for COVID-19 tested right away regardless of if any symptoms are showing. Next, the unions are calling for a 14-day period of paid precautionary leave or quarantine for all healthcare professionals who have been exposed to the coronavirus.
