Consider the Advantages of Class A Foam in Firefighting
Author: Craig McDonnell, VP, Fire Suppression Americas & P&P Retardant
Class A foam improves the efficacy of firefighting, enhances water's effectiveness in dousing flames, and introduces other advantages. However, misconceptions about the use of foam, its environmental impact, and lack of training, have contributed to a decline in its use over recent years. In this article, Craig McDonnell delves into the benefits of using Class A foam and dispels some of the misconceptions around the technology.

Two employees of Phillips 66 were injured in a fire at one of the oil company's refineries in the Texas Panhandle on Monday, according to the company. The fire began about 11:20 a.m. and was extinguished by 1 p.m. after emergency management officials and the Borger Fire Department were notified, according to a statement by Phillips spokesperson Al Ortiz. "The situation has been stabilized, and all personnel have been accounted for," according to the statement. "The refinery continues to operate. The cause of the incident is under investigation." The injured employees were taken to a hospital, but their condition has not been released. The extent of the fire has also not be disclosed. Borger Emergency Management Director Jason Whisler referred questions to Phillips 66.

VIDEO: The Austin Fire Department said it's dealing with more fires at vacant structures, mainly due to the unhoused. If you're looking for it, you'll see vacant buildings all around Austin. "For whatever reason, there are more vacant structures in the city now that we're seeing, whether that's an economic downturn or redevelopment," said Thayer Smith, assistant chief of operations for AFD. Smith said the department has ramped up efforts to keep people out of those empty buildings. "We're certainly seeing an increase in fires in vacant structures," said Smith. Smith said that over the past 12 months, AFD has had to put out at least 57 fires at vacant buildings, and most of the time, it involves the unhoused. "There's certainly been a few of them that have been accidental, from electrical causes and that sort of thing, but for the majority of those, what we're seeing is they're being used by the homeless," he said.

VIDEO: A dad and his two sons are seeking help in all forms after a battery ignited inside their Leander home over the weekend. The family is now left without a home because of a fire and two of their four cats who didn't make it out of the home alive. Around 12:04 p.m. Friday, the Leander Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 1814 Southcreek Drive, according to the city. Sean Noll said his kids were home while he was working. He told KXAN they ran over to a neighbor's home when the fire started. That neighbor tried to stop it from spreading, but had no luck. "I was watching all this unfold on my ring camera," Noll said. "I can't believe all this happened in less than 30 minutes." The Leander Fire Department said the fire started when a lithium-ion battery overheated.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: One person died and a child was injured in a massive fire that impacted multiple buildings in East Boston early Tuesday morning. The fire started around 5 a.m. in a multi-family building on Meridian Street and traveled to two adjacent buildings, the Boston Fire Department said. Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke said one person died in the fire, and a child was injured and remains hospitalized. The child's condition was not immediately known. Four other people were rescued from the building, and one firefighter suffered minor injuries battling the blaze. "I want to share my deepest condolences to the family who has lost someone here this morning," Mayor Michelle Wu said at a press conference near the scene on Tuesday morning.

VIDEO: Thirteen men and women started a new career in Bloomington on Monday after changes in application requirements allowed them to follow their dreams. In October, the Bloomington Fire Department eliminated the requirement for potential hires to be paramedic-certified before joining the team. Instead, future first responders will learn everything they need to know through the department. Phillip Taylor is a member of the first round of hires since the new changes went into place. He says this way of becoming licensed will save him time and money in the long run. "It just makes it easier, and now I already have a department that I'm going to be working with, and so then I'll have that license, and then I'll already be able to use it right then and there," Taylor said.

On any given day, residents across Portage County might see Assistant EMS Chief Joe Gemza from the Stevens Point Fire Department on the front lines of local emergencies. But they also might recognize him from a popular Wendy's commercial. Under the moniker "Tyler" of the goofy pitchmen pair Tyler and Toby, Gemza has been selling junior bacon cheeseburgers and chocolate Frostys to anyone who'll listen for over a year. "You can't be a firefighter-paramedic forever," Gemza told the Metro Wire. "Plus, my wife wants a hot tub." Gemza said he shot his scenes at a Wendy's corporate restaurant in Madison, close enough to home that his work schedule wasn't interrupted. The chain has 59 locations in Wisconsin, with the most recent opening in Plover last year.
