Tyler City Council approves purchase of new ladder truck for fire department The Tyler Fire Department will be adding a Pierce Custom Enforcer Aerial Platform Ladder truck to Fire Station 10's fleet. The Tyler City Council approved the purchase of the nearly $1.4 million ladder truck for the Fire Department on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The council previously approved allocating money for the vehicle as a part of the 2022 budget. The Pierce Custom Enforcer Aerial Platform Ladder truck will provide firefighters a safe and secure place to operate for rescues as well as carry large amounts of water and disperse it at an ideal angle. "This new tower truck will also be a technical rescue truck, so you'll have more ability in that area a quicker response to handle any accidents or any kind of technical things that happen," said Tyler Fire Department Chief David Coble. KYTX-TV CBS/CW 19 NACOGDOCHES Workers rescued after ‘scaffolding malfunction' in downtown Austin, ATCEMS says Workers have been rescued after a "scaffolding malfunction" left "two people hanging from ropes" at a construction site in downtown Austin. Austin Fire says there were no injuries, the workers just appeared to be stuck and couldn't "get out the situation." Austin Fire Department rescued the workers using a "pick off" technique. The agency initially tweeted about the incident at 10:23 a.m., saying it was in the area of 1200 N. Interstate 35 service road on the southbound side, east of the freeway near East 12th Street. ACTEMS said that after consulting with an "experiment expert" on scene, the equipment wasn't responding. The first worker was rescued just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The second worker rescue was complete just before 1 p.m. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Woman Hit, Killed By Car While Walking In Grapevine Roadway; Drunk Driver Crashes Into Firetruck On Scene Say Police A woman was hit by a car and killed while walking on a roadway in Grapevine late Tuesday night, October 26. Police said they received multiple 911 calls about a person walking in a lane of traffic near the 500 block of North State Highway 121. A few minutes later, police said another motorist called to say he hit someone who was on the roadway. "Officers responded within five minutes of the first 911 call, and discovered a female already deceased," said Amanda McNew with the Grapevine Police Department. Officials said that officers shut down SH-121 as they investigated the crash. At 1 a.m. another motorist crashed into a Grapevine firetruck that was on the scene. Nobody was hurt and police arrested that driver for alleged DWI. "While the secondary crash was a result of intoxication, it is a great reminder to always slow down and move over when you see crews at work," said McNew. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Firefighters rescue cats from house fire in north Amarillo Fire crews were able to rescue multiple cats as they extinguished a trailer house fire in North Amarillo yesterday. Firefighters were dispatched at 2:00 p.m. to 3641 Neuches Street on reports of a fire. Crews found smoke coming from the home and discovered an outdoor fire had burned through the floor of the bathroom to the interior, according to AFD. The fire was "knocked down" and crews searched the home. A few cats were found inside the home, taken outside and given medical care. AFD said one of the cats did not survive. No other injuries were reported. The Amarillo Fire Marshal's Office has ruled the fire undetermined. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Follow Up: Pflugerville continues negotiations with private ambulance service Pflugerville City Council members are moving forward with a private ambulance service. At a meeting Tuesday night, they voted to continue with negotiations. The council is trying to figure out how to bring more resources to the city. It comes as its current emergency services district says it needs more money and while voters are deciding whether to annex part of the city into a new ESD. Negotiations for the private ambulance service kicked off earlier this month with some pushback from the community. Critics say private ambulances could overcharge residents, taking advantage of those in need of emergency care. Those in support of seeking alternate ambulance services or finding a better compromise with the ESD say there is an incorrect accounting of funds and a need to find an equitable solution. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Residents allowed back into building previously evacuated due to gas line leak, Fort Worth fire officials say Hundreds of downtown Fort Worth residents were evacuated Tuesday due to a gas line leak, officials say. Around 3 p.m., Atmos Energy says a construction crew was working near the intersection of West 5th and Taylor Street and a natural gas pipeline was damaged. As a precaution, residents and businesses in the area were evacuated, and traffic was rerouted. On Wednesday, fire officials said they were working to clear the building so they could let people back inside a residential building, The Tower. Around 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, the Fort Worth Fire Department said the leak had stopped but Atmos Energy technicians are still on scene due to a high-level gas in the 500 Taylor Street building. The fire department said gas was turned off to a large part of downtown and residents are "still not being allowed back at this time for their safety." WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Residents Safe After Three Homes In Pennsylvania Catch Fire VIDEO: A massive fire has spread to three homes in Pittsburgh's Perry South neighborhood. The fire broke out early on Thursday morning in the 300 block of Kennedy Avenue. Several fire companies are on the scene battling the flames. According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the residents of the homes were able to make it out safely. Crews on the scene said the residents of the first house that caught fire were forced to their roof, called 911, and had to jump off. They were not hurt and did not have to go to the hospital. All three homes were heavily damaged and lost their roofs. However, the cause of the fire is unknown and the investigation will determine if these homes are a total loss. Firefighters are asking people to avoid the area. KDKA-TV CBS 2 PITTSBURGH With vaccine mandate looming, New York City could see 20% fewer ambulances; 20% of fire companies closed With a vaccine mandate for FDNY members days away from kicking in, officials warned fire companies across New York City could close and ambulances could be taken off streets because of worker shortages. Many firefighters and emergency medical workers are still unvaccinated and have no plans of getting the COVID jab. An estimated 20 percent of fire units could close, officials said. New Yorkers could see around 20 percent fewer ambulances on the road. FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the agency has plans in place to mitigate staffing issues. "The Department must manage the unfortunate fact that a portion of our workforce has refused to comply with a vaccine mandate for all city employees," he said. "We will use all means at our disposal, including mandatory overtime, mutual aid from other EMS providers, and significant changes to the schedules of our members. We will ensure the continuity of operations and safety of all those we have sworn oaths to serve." WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK South Carolina fire personnel recall ghostly experiences with entity known as 'the Hag' Is there a haunted fire station in North Charleston? A couple of firefighters seem convinced an entity named "The Hag" is residing in old Station 6. The city of North Charleston released a video ominously titled "Is this place haunted?" on YouTube today where two fire personnel tell about their encounters with the mysterious spirit. The Hag is supposedly known to move chairs, turn faucets on and off, wake up firefighters and hold them down when they are trying to move. We think she needs to make up her mind. "One individual actually said he saw the outline of a shadow," one official said in the video. "He was in the top bunk, so the shadow was quite tall, and the shadow actually told him to get out of bed. He tried to get out of bed, but it felt like something was holding him down." Florida firefighter set to run in New York City Marathon to promote prostate cancer awareness A Delray Beach firefighter is running in the New York City Marathon on Nov. 7. He's hoping his run will help bring to light an important issue. Tyler Adams has been with Delray Beach Fire Rescue for 12 years. He's been preparing for a big race that is scheduled to occur in less than two weeks. "I was fortunate enough to be chosen by the "Movember" charity to run the New York Marathon in the 50th anniversary of the marathon," Adams said. November is a month where men will grow out their facial hair to help promote awareness for prostate cancer. "I don't grow a mustache that well," Adams joked. With his mustache and all, Adams said he has been a big advocate for awareness after seeing men in the department get diagnosed -- even losing a fellow firefighter several years ago. WPTV NBC 5 WEST PALM BEACH Missouri fire department joins Department of Labor apprenticeship program The Springfield Fire Department may begin registering new firefighters into the U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program. In September, Springfield City Council voted to approve an agreement between the Springfield Fire Department and the U.S. Department of Labor. The fire department sought out the program to provide opportunities for firefighters to earn credit while accomplishing their formal fire academy and fire service-related on-the-job training. Assistant Chief Olan Morelan says the goal of this partnership is to help with the recruitment and retention of firefighters. "It gives the firefighters credit for what they're already doing and the training they've received," Assistant Chief Morelan says." SFD has registered 46 firefighters as apprentices in their new program. The program consists of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training for firefighters new to the fire service. Assistant Chief Morelan says that takes about three years to complete. KYTV NBC 3 SPRINGFIELD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
