Firefighters battle wind and flames at east Fort Worth apartment complex Families at a Fort Worth apartment complex were forced out Thursday morning because of a two-alarm fire. The fire in the 9000 block of Sun Ridge Circle, near Interstate 30 and Eastchase Parkway, started just before 6 a.m. in a second-floor apartment. Firefighters had to call for extra help because the wind was fueling the flames. "The fire did make its way through the roof of that building. Once that made its way through the roof of the building a second alarm was called due to the amount of fire and the fact that we had heavy winds pushing that fire at the time," said Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Mike Drivdahl. Thankfully, the firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to other buildings and no one was hurt. "That's always a concern when you have a fire this early in the morning in an apartment-style building. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Large brush fire near Mathis destroys home A large fire in Lake City near Mathis on Wednesday afternoon claimed a home as well as some other structures. The fire started Wednesday afternoon just before 3:00 p.m. on the 100 block of Paisano Hill. Firefighters from surrounding agencies worked into the night to make sure hot spots are out. Many nearby residents said they were just thankful those crews were able to stop the fire before it led to any more damage. "I'm amazing by the people out here," said Angela Martinez. Martinez told 3News she received a call from a neighbor about the fire which she said was near her home. Martinez said she rushed over from Corpus Christi to check on her property. "I was really worried about what I was going to find. There are so many amazing firefighters here," said Martinez. Her home was spared, but her neighbors wasn't. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Strike Team from Dallas assigned to West Texas to help with upcoming fire danger Drought conditions, strong winds and heat are creating the perfect storm for high fire danger on the South Plains. Chief Tim Smith, with the West Carlisle Volunteer Fire Department, says the conditions look familiar. "It's probably the worst drought, or is the worst drought, according to the experts, since 2011. 2011 was a huge fire season, so the conditions are ripe and ramping up to be just like it was in 2011," Smith said. He says the department is revving up for a potentially dangerous fire season, starting now. "We're always on standby, but we're in a heightened sense of awareness where we make sure our crews are in place and make sure our resources are good. Everything's tuned up and ready to go," Smith added. Chris Graham, with the Texas A&M Forest Service, says they're ready to help volunteer fire departments at a moment's notice. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK The Merits of Prescribed Burning–East Texas Is a 'Fire-Dependent Ecosystem' It's human nature to be concerned when you see smoke rising from a wooded area in East Texas. We are hardwired to perceive fires burning in nature as dangerous and potentially deadly--to both wildlife and potentially humans. While it's crucial to make sure we don't have a wildfire on our hands, seeing that smoke isn't always a bad thing. It may be what is known as prescribed burning. What? The Texas A&M Forest Service says "prescribed burning has become one of the most efficient and effective tools for land management in the state of Texas." And apparently, many experts both in the forest service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department say the benefits of prescribed burning can't be overstated. So what are a couple of these benefits? KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Corpus Christi firefighter brings Louisiana flare to South Texas The latest edition of "Family Favorite Foods", has us dishing up a Louisiana favorite in South Texas. We head to Corpus Christi Fire Departments Station #14 for a meal that is sure to bring the heat. Kenny Savoy has been with CCFD for almost two decades and takes pride in helping the community. Something else he takes pride in, is cooking many of the meals for his fire house. One of his specialties is Sauce Piquant. Cajun and Creole homes have been dining on Sauce Piquant for generations. Some like it with Alligator, some with chicken. The main ingredient can even be seafood. But the process is all the same. You must have the trinity, which include onion, bell pepper, and celery. And you must make a roux. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WAVE-TV NBC 3 LOUISVILLE New Jersey first responder plays famous piano to honor frontline workers VIDEO: This year has been incredibly stressful for all of us, but our first responders have bravely and selflessly led the way. On Wednesday, one of our frontline heroes got the healing opportunity to make music on a legendary piano. It's something a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Princeton hasn't done since the pandemic began. "I can sort of have in the back of my mind just the incredible places that this piano has been and the folks who have played on it," says Lee Sandberg, a volunteer firefighter for the Princeton Fire Department and an EMT for the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad. "I mean, it really is just a dream come true." The Steinway piano was handpicked and signed by legendary pianist Yuja Wang and has been used in iconic venues including Carnegie Hall. "To have an idol that you respect and are completely in awe of, and to be able to use that piano yourself, it really is kind of a humbling experience," Sandberg says. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA 'Nightmare' #13 fire station in Florida gets more help VIDEO: Fire Station 13 sits in the shadow of SheiKra, the towering roller coaster at Busch Gardens. The station gets more calls for service than anywhere else in Tampa. It's so busy city councilman Luis Vera says it's earned the nickname 'Nightmare on Annie Street' because if you work here, don't plan on getting much sleep. "It's a running joke, but the truth is they shouldn't have Freddy Kruger as their mascot because people know that if you work here, you are going to be overworked," said Viera. Station 13 is actually one of the busiest fire stations in the nation with more than 10,000 service calls a year. It also covers a lot of ground. "It's way too much. You are talking about the communities off Fowler Avenue, the University area, Busch Boulevard. Sulpher Springs, etc.," said Viera. And up until now, the firefighters here only had one engine to work with. Now they have another one that will help with the workload. WFTS-TV ABC 28 TAMPA Illinois survey shows most first responders have post-retirement careers The results of a new survey conducted by the Illinois Public Pension Fund Association (IPPFA) indicate the majority of Illinois firefighting and law enforcement professionals continue working in a variety of professions after retiring from their first responder jobs. Firefighters and law enforcement officers typically retire at a younger age due to the demands of the occupation than those in other lines of work. The IPPFA survey, conducted during the fall and winter of 2020, measured how many of these public safety employees work following their police or fire retirements, the types of jobs the retirees take, and how satisfied they are with their post-retirement employment. "This is the first in-depth survey of what these first responders do after retiring from their primary careers, which is important because they usually have more years to work after retirement than workers in other professions," said IPPFA President James McNamee.
