Harris County Emergency Services District Number 48 certified as training facility for structure firefighters Harris County Emergency Services District Number 48's Fire Department was designated by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection as a certified training facility for structure firefighters. The certification is the result of the department establishing a training facility at one of its new stations, according to a press release. The facility will be housed at the future Fire Station 6 property, located at 3506 Porter Rd. The training allows individuals to take a state certification course usually found at colleges or larger fire departments. HCESD 48 is the only state certification academy found in the Katy area. "The District thanks the Command Staff, ESD Board Commissioners, and the citizens and taxpayers of the area for making this new facility possible," the press release read. KATY TIMES 9th anniversary of what became the largest wildfire in East Texas history The year was 2011 and a devastating drought was just getting started in the Brazos Valley and across the Lone Star State. June 17th marks the anniversary of what became known as the Bearing Fire, sparking in Polk County before moving north into Trinity County. Due to a lack of rain and extremely dry vegetation, that fire quickly grew and torched more than 23,000 acres between the two counties, in just three days. It would become the largest wildfire in East Texas history, to this day. Once the fire was controlled, an estimated stumpage value of timber destroyed ranged from $12.8 million to $18.3 million. The lost volume of wood burned in the Bearing Fire could have been used to produce forest products worth a total of $243.5 million. According to the National Weather Service, a wheel bearing spark is what started the blaze, hence the name. Another major Brazos Valley wildfire was burning during this time. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Garwood Volunteer Fire Department enhances fleet, increasing self sufficiency The Garwood Volunteer Fire Department accepted a $200,000 cost share grant from the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program administered by Texas A&M Forest Service. The grant helped purchase a pumper/tanker that has a 3,000-gallon water capacity and self-contained foam system. "This new apparatus can carry a large quantity of water as well as draft from a pond or other water source and has a portable drop tank designed to hold 3,000 gallons of water," said Garwood VFD Fire Chief Todd Krenek. "Having enough water upon arrival to get a handle on the fire quickly is essential and helps our department be more self-sufficient in our rural firefighting." The members of the department have received training to become familiar with the truck and its driving capabilities, it has gone into service and is ready to roll. COLORADO COUNTY CITIZEN COVID-19 in Texas means fire crews are fighting more than just flames Fire season has started almost a month early, according to estimates by the Texas A&M Forest Service, and combined with the COVID-19 pandemic, fire crews face new challenges this year. Since June 9, Texas A&M Forest Service firefighters and local fire departments around the state have responded to at least 90 wildfires burning more than 21,000 acres. The forest service attributes many of those ignitions to roadside starts, equipment use, welding and debris burning. The uptick in wildfire activity statewide is complicated by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Since each region typically relies on other regions— even other states— for backup during larger wildfires, the social distancing measures are requiring crews to congregate further apart, limit equipment sharing, and be self-sufficient for water and supplies. KMID-TV ABC 2 MIDLAND/ODESSA Family displaced after house fire in Temple A family has been displaced after a house fire in Temple Wednesday evening. Temple Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 6:20 p.m. to reports of a structure fire in the 1000 block of South 49th Street. When crews arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the west side of a house. Firefighters were able to gain entry and quickly extinguish the blaze. The fire was under control by 6:43 p.m. Everyone in the home was able to escape uninjured. The Red Cross is assisting the two adults and teenage child that have been displaced. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Multiple alarm fire at Garwood rice dryer Eleven firefighting agencies were in full response mode Sunday, June 14 battling a fire at Stallman Dryer on FM 1693 in the Garwood area. Units from Columbus, Eagle Lake, Garwood, Sheridan, Rock Island, and Weimar fire departments were assisted by El Campo, Wharton, Glen Flora, Midfield and Hungerford departments. In addition to fire agencies, CCEMS Medic 3 was on location. First responders received the call at 9:01 p.m. and had the fire stopped at 3:30 a.m. Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Chuck Rogers said water supply impacted operations until enough tankers were brought into rotation. Rogers also said that the ladder truck from Columbus and an elevated water platform from El Campo "had a positive impact" on operations. COLORADO COUNTY CITIZEN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire department union in Missouri reacts to being asked to cut 4.5% of budget The Union for the Kansas City Fire Department says they are already short 60 firefighters. Cutting 4.5% of the department budget would mean close to $9 million. That would have dangerous impacts on public safety. "I believe that fire department cuts and public safety cuts should be the last to be made," to International Association of Firefighters local 42 President Tim Dupin said. Dupin says the cuts the department is being asked to consider would mean laying off at least 142 firefighters and closing three to seven fire stations. "The mission of the fire department is to be anywhere within four to six minutes. That would definitely slow that response. We believe we are understaffed now. We have a shortage of 60 firefighters right now and any further cuts would be detrimental to the mission of the department," Dupin said. KCTV CBS 5 KANSAS CITY 13 years later in South Carolina: Honoring the 9 Charleston firefighters killed in the Sofa Superstore Fire VIDEO: Thursday marks 13 years since nine Charleston firefighters were killed in a fire at the Sofa Superstore on Savannah Highway. It was June 18th, 2007 at 7:09 p.m. when the alarm sounded – firefighters sprang into action. Black smoke was seen pouring from the furniture store and warehouse, and as firefighters began to battle the flames, a 911 call comes in saying an employee is trapped inside. Firefighters rushed inside and rescued the employee. The fire quickly consumed the building once that worker was freed. But the firefighters still inside the building sent out a "mayday call." The fire caused the roof to collapse. That call would be one of the last things we heard from the nine heroes inside. WSPA-TV CBS 7 SPARTANBURG FirstNet Board greenlights $218M for core network upgrades, more deployable assets FirstNet, the dedicated public safety communications network built by AT&T through a public-private partnership, is getting more than $200 million for enhancements to its portable assets and core network for 5G. The First Responder Network Authority Board at its quarterly meeting yesterday signed off on $218 million for strategic investments targeting two areas: initial core network upgrades as the first phase of moving to 5G, and expanding FirstNet's fleet of deployable assets. These both align with FirstNet's six Roadmap domains, which help prioritize investments, among other resources. "These investments mark the next major step in our mission as we continue to evolve the FirstNet network based on public safety's needs," said FirstNet Authority Board Chair Edward Horowitz in a statement. FIERCE WIRELESS Michigan collects 30k gallons of toxic PFAS firefighting foam More than 30,000 gallons of toxic fluorochemical foam has been collected from municipal fire departments and commercial airports in Michigan in an effort that state officials believe is the nation's largest collection and disposal program of its type. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and the state fire marshal's office announced the milestone for their per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, foam disposal program on Wednesday, June 16. "There have been some smaller collection programs around the country, but this is the first statewide collection program of this magnitude that we're aware of," said Steve Sliver, head of EGLE's PFAS Action Response Team, or MPART. Since December, EGLE says about 32,000 gallons of Class B aqueous film forming foam, or AFFF, has been collected for shipment to a hazardous waste landfill in Grand Ville, Idaho.
