A recycling business in Kilgore was burning Wednesday night. Kilgore, Sabine, and White Oak fire departments were working to extinguish a structure fire at Rivers Recycling. The facility is located at 298 FM 1252 West in Kilgore. Kilgore Fire Marshal Ryan Riley says dispatch received the call reporting a structure fire just before 6 p.m. By the time Kilgore firefighters made it to the scene and set up, the fire had quickly spread to the entire facility. "In this particular area, water supply is always a big issue. There are fire hydrants out here, this is a rural water supply, and it's not the City of Kilgore's water supply, so it's kind of limited on that. But when you get into recycling and the amount of stuff that's in that particular facility, it would take a lot of water, probably more than even a normal fire hydrant could supply," Riley said. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER PHOTOS: Licensed professional counselor Brandi Riley is spearheading an initiative to introduce therapy dog support for local first responders. Her efforts aim to alleviate stress and provide emotional support in crisis situations across the Brazos Valley. Riley, who has extensive experience in trauma counseling, was inspired by her deployments to major incidents such as the Uvalde school shooting and the Allen Outlet Mall shootings. She says these experiences highlighted the significant impact that therapy dogs can have in helping individuals cope with trauma. "I've always loved dogs but never had the chance to work with one in this capacity before," Riley said. "After witnessing firsthand the calming effect they have on victims and first responders alike, I decided to bring this resource to our community." KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN As Southeast Texas begins to heat up for another hot summer, firefighters are getting ready to battle the heat as well as the flames. While firefighters are trained to protect the public, they also need to protect themselves when it comes to heat exhaustion. It all begins with their equipment, especially those big heavy coats and pants, known as "bunker gear," that they wear while fighting fires. The inside of their "bunker gear" can reach temperatures of more than 100 degrees and make the job more strenuous, according to Groves Fire Chief Lance Billeaud. In the extreme heat of summer this can act as an extra weight on these first responders. "It's heated up a little early," Billeaud said. "And so you've got to take more precautions a lot earlier than we normally do." KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT A fire broke out at a home late Wednesday night in Corpus Christi on the 7000 block of Hathor Dr., near Nile Dr. and McArdle Dr. Three people were at the home when the fire began just before 11 p.m in the home's garage. Corpus Christi Fire officials tell 3NEWS they arrived within minutes, and the fire was put out within 20 minutes of arriving. Corpus Christi Battalion Chief Daniel Valdez said one person went back into the home while attempting to retrieve a family member, something he advises against, due to the inherent dangers involved. The fire was believed to only be located in the garage. No one was injured. One person was arrested at the scene, but it's unclear if that arrest was related to the fire. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER VIDEO: Firefighters in South Los Angeles said they had to physically fight a man off after he attacked a fire truck in a caught-on-camera confrontation. A Station 16 fire truck was on its way to respond to a crash when the man suddenly climbed aboard the fire engine. "We were literally responding to a traffic collision and this guy just came out of nowhere, jumped in front of the engine and just started punching it," said Andrew Chaing, a firefighter/paramedic who was in the truck at the time of the incident. According to Chaing, the bizarre encounter happened on June 7 near the intersection of Central Avenue and Nadeau Street, roughly half a mile from the fire station. Video shows the man punching the windows of the truck before he turned on the firefighters. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES PHOTOS: Seattle firefighter Denny Kimball has found a passion that ignites his creativity and inspires station solidarity. The veteran firefighter uses his artistic talent to create patches for fire stations, from an homage to Jimi Hendrix to a Green Lake swamp creature. Kimball's unique patch designs reflect the gritty and heroic nature of firefighting. Kimball, who currently drives Ladder 3 in the Central District, estimates that he's created about 75 patch designs. "Around 30, I think, are being used in the Seattle Fire Department," said Kimball. "And I've got a couple out of Puget Sound Fire, Burlington, King County District 2, Renton." Kimball has long family ties to the Seattle Fire Department. "My father retired out of Seattle with 30 years," he said. SEATTLE REFINED |
