Irving Fire Department Using Old Equipment To Protect First Responders On Roadsides First responders face many dangers on the job, but some of their most dangerous moments come while responding to accident victims on the side of the road. Sometimes distracted drivers hit them. The consequences can be deadly. The Irving Fire Department is now using old fire engines as blockers to prevent distracted drivers from hitting first responders. "They're lit up like a Christmas tree," said Battalion Chief Robert McWilliams with the Irving Fire Department. "Hopefully they get people's attention. These things are parked at an angle at an accident scene." Many drivers are profoundly distracted by their phones when they're going past first responders working accidents on the roadways. Research in 2019 from the National Safety Council found 71% of drivers admitted to taking photos and texting while driving by emergency workers; that's nearly triple the 24% who admitted to doing it under normal driving conditions. KTXA-TV 21 FORT WORTH Fort Worth firefighters learn to recognize signs of potential suicide and take action to prevent it In 2015, more firefighters and police officers died by suicide than in the line of duty. That was the first year for that tragic and startling statistic. It has held true every year since. According to a report published in 2017 by the Ruderman Family Foundation, almost 250 firefighters and police officers died by suicide in 2016 compared to just over 200 who died in the line of duty. Unfortunately, those numbers may not be accurate because the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance estimates that only 40%-45% of firefighter suicides are reported. "The members of The Fort Worth Fire Department are highly skilled, well trained and prepared to give their all for others," said Fort Worth Fire Chief James Davis. "While they understand that risk, the expectations of the occupation place them at risk of stress, anxiety and depression. Suicide has become a great issue of concern in the fire service, outpacing line-of-duty death since 2015." CITY OF FORT WORTH Rocket test gone wrong ends in fire, evacuations at Firefly Aerospace facility in Briggs VIDEO: An "anomaly" during a rocket test at a Burnet County aerospace facility in Briggs resulted in a fire and evacuations on Wednesday night. According to Christina Kang, a spokesperson for Firefly Aerospace, an incident during routine testing ahead of a planned spring launch for its Alpha rocket caused a small fire on the test stand that was quickly put out. On Wednesday afternoon, the company tweeted a now-deleted short clip of the loading LOX, which stands for Liquid Oxygen. Kang said that the test stand has an automatic fire suppression system for cases like this and that the system quickly extinguished the fire. Despite initial reports of an explosion, both Firefly and the Burnet County Sheriff Calvin Boyd both confirmed that there was never an explosion. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN El Paso firefighter Don Johnson heroically saved disabled girl from high voltage in 1977 I received a call this week from Chris Johnson, whose firefighter father, Don Johnson, died Jan. 16. Johnson was looking for an article about his father receiving the International Benjamin Franklin Fire Service Award for saving a young girl in 1977. I found the article reporting the young girl's rescue in the Sep. 28. 1977, edition of the Times reported by Laurie Paternoster: Elizabeth Alicia Carranco, 12, of 5584 Hunt, stood in her backyard Tuesday long enough to see three of her five puppies buried before she ran to a nearby electric company substation, climbed a 30-foot tower and grabbed a power line. The explosion from the lines caring 184,000 volts of electricity was heard by neighbors blocks away. But Elizabeth, a deaf mute, didn't hear a sound. The 12-year-old loved dogs and the news of the puppies' death left her crying. EL PASO TIMES Fire Department: Fire at South Austin church building was accidental Nearly 75 firefighters were called out in the middle of the night after a fire broke out at a church in South Austin. The fire was reported just after midnight at the Westoak Woods Baptist Church on West Slaughter near Westgate Boulevard. It happened in a building connected to the church and not inside the sanctuary. When firefighters first arrived they saw flames shooting through the building so they went into defensive mode because it was too dangerous for them to go inside. According to AFD, the fire on Slaughter Lane (the church) was ruled accidental and caused by some electrical issues. Firefighters estimate there was roughly $400,000 in damages. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Lubbock emergency crews respond to fire Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to a two-alarm fire in South Lubbock, at around 8 p.m., Wednesday evening. 3 American firefighters killed in C-130 crash while battling Australian wildfires Three American firefighters died in a water tanker plane crash Thursday while battling wildfires in Australia, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed. Rural Fire Service officials said they had located the plane, a C-130 Hercules, that crashed in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales state. Coulson Aviation in Oregon said in a statement that one of its C-130 Lockheed large air tankers was lost after it left Richmond in New South Wales with retardant for a firebombing mission. It said the accident was "extensive" but had few other details. "We are deeply saddened to confirm there were 3 fatalities," Coulson's statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the three crew members onboard." Berejiklian also gave "heartfelt condolences" to the families and said flags in New South Wales would be flown at half-staff Friday. FOX NEWS Michigan firefighters staying in trucks after mold forces them out of station VIDEO: A group of firefighters have been forced out of their station due to health concerns. According to the president of the Dearborn Firefighters Union, fire station five is a moldy mess. Instead of sleeping overnight and waking up if there's a call— firefighters have been staying in trucks. They usually stay at fire station five in Dearborn, but 7 Action News has been told what started as a flooding problem led to mold. Dearborn Firefighters Union President Jeffery Lentz says fire station five flooded two weeks ago on Jan. 9. He tells 7 Action News that firefighters were sent to other stations temporarily until the flooding was taken care of then brought back. On Wednesday, a cleanup crew discovered mold. Lentz says there is so much mold in the station – it's uninhabitable. WXYZ-TV ABC 7 DETROIT North Carolina county recommends shutting down fire department, firefighters say they're here to stay After 67 years, a Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department could lose it's funding from Mecklenburg County. That was a recommendation from the county's Land Use and Environmental Services Agency at last week's Board of County Commissioner's policy meeting. They say these community fire departments are expensive to run and although no official decision has been made, the Cook's Fire Department says they will do whatever they can to keep operating. "It was a kick in the gut for all of us," said Tommy Towner, Chief of Cook's Fire Department. At the last county policy meeting, the Land Use and Environmental Services Agency presented a projected budget plan discussing community fire departments in the county. They went over the history of these departments, saying in the past they were given a flat fee from the county to help run the departments. WBTV CBS 3 CHARLOTTE Phoenix fire truck drove up to 29 mph above the speed limit at time of deadly crash, report says VIDEO: A Phoenix fire engine was traveling approximately 29 mph over the speed limit at the time of a deadly crash in April 2019, according to the police investigation released Wednesday. The report, released more than nine months after the crash, also said the other vehicle's driver, Kenneth "Chase" Collins, 20, did not possess a valid driver's license and had marijuana in his system. Collins turned left in front of the engine, which was operating with lights and siren activated, according to the report. Police investigators did not specify which driver was at fault for the crash, and they dfid not recommend criminal charges. Phoenix Fire Engine 18 was on an emergency call on April 7 when it crashed into Collins' pickup truck on Bethany Home Road at 29th Avenue. The engine rolled over into a schoolyard, and the pickup was crushed. Collins, his girlfriend, Dariana Serrano, 19, and their infant son, Kenneth, all died in the pickup. All three firefighters on the engine were injured. KNXV-TV ABC 15 PHOENIX Bill calls for changes in Maine's 'Dig Safe' law in response to Farmington explosion VIDEO: Maine lawmakers are considering a bill that would make changes to the state's "Dig Safe" law in response to last year's deadly explosion in Farmington. The bill would add liquefied propane gas lines to the law. "Dig Safe" laws prohibit digging around certain underground utility lines. In Maine, LP lines are currently not on the prohibited list, bill sponsor Rep. Seth Berry said. "It is unfortunate that we have not already passed a bill to protect our LP lines. If we had, the devastating explosion in Farmington could have been avoided. We must take action now to ensure the safety of Mainers and to prevent an event like this from happening in our state again," Berry said. Berry said previous attempts to add LP lines to Maine's "Dig Safe" law did not pass in the Legislature. WMTW-TV ABC 8 POLAND SPRING PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
