KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Fire forces San Antonio family to evacuate home, causes $185K in damage, fire officials say A San Antonio family safely escaped a late-night two-story house fire in the city's Northside , but the fire caused extensive damage to their home, fire officials said Wednesday. The fire was called in around 10 p.m. at a home in 25600 block of Crimson Beauty, not far from Overlook Parkway and Highway 281 in Timberwood Park. Firefighters said they arrived to find flames coming from the second level of the two-story home. Initial reports were that a child was trapped inside, but when they arrived everyone including the pets had made it safely out, fire officials said. Firefighters said the fire began in the attic so crews had to vent the flames by putting a hole in the roof. The fire was contained to the second story of the home. The family of four and two pets were not injured. Damage is estimated at $185,000. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Woman found dead inside burned Smith County home A Tuesday afternoon fire destroyed a residence and possibly claimed the life of an elderly woman. Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks said that at around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, a structure fire broke out in the 12000 block of Garland St. near Thompson Lane just outside Tyler. The structure, a single-family residence occupied at the time only by a woman believed to be in her 80s. Lindale, Dixie, Red Springs and Noonday volunteer fire departments responded to the call, as well as the chief from Smith County Emergency Services District No. 2, Terry Rozell. Brooks said the crews found heavy fire in the rear of the structure upon arrival. "After making entry and during an initial search, they located one elderly female victim, likely in her 80s," Brooks said. "EMS took over patient care and deemed her beyond saving and she was pronounced dead at the scene." KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Firefighters put out fire inside old Cunningham Middle School in Corpus Christi The quick actions of local firefighters is being credited for stopping an old CCISD middle school from burning down. Firefighters said they were called after people saw heavy smoke coming from the old Cunningham Middle School in the 4300 block of Prescott Street on Wednesday night. Firefighters were met with large plumes of black smoke pouring out of the back of the building, according to fire investigators. Additional firefighters were called in as crews discovered the source of the fire and put it out. It turns out an air-conditioning unit caught fire, caused heavy smoke damage to one room. Firefighters said the room was used for storing away old files and paperwork, which caught fire and produced the heavy smoke. It took firefighters 5 minutes to put out the fire. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Oncologist, Edinburg fire chief stress safety of COVID vaccine for cancer patients It's safe for cancer survivors and patients undergoing chemotherapy to take the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a local specialist. DHR Health oncologist Dr. Lee Drinkard emphasized that those currently fighting cancer are at a higher risk of succumbing to COVID-19 symptoms if they contract the virus since cancer and some related treatments can weaken a patient's immune system. The death rate of COVID-19 nearly triples for patients who also have cancer compared to those without, according to a study published by the American Association for Cancer Research, especially for those fighting blood or lung cancer. Several chemotherapies aim to stop cancer cells from growing, which in turn suppresses the patient's immune system. THE MONITOR Red Cross assisting family after east Lubbock house fire A home was damaged and the family is being assisted by Red Cross after a fire on Wednesday morning. LFR crews were able to extinguish and contain most of the fire to the front of the house. The fire damaged the front of the house and the rest of house had smoke damage. Fire Causes Significant Damage to Texas Church VIDEO: An intense fire early Thursday morning caused significant damage to the New Light Church in Pleasant Grove. Dallas firefighters were called to the church in the 9300 block of Elam Road just before 1:30 a.m. and found flames burning through the roof. The fire was moving so quickly through the large one-story building that firefighters were forced shift to a defensive attack, fighting the fire from outside. About 40 firefighters were dispatched to the fire because windy conditions brought the concern of danger to nearby homes. No one was injured, but the building sustained significant damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Federal judge dismisses Delaware firefighters' lawsuit over fatal 2016 Canby Park arson VIDEO: An appeal filed on behalf of Wilmington firefighters killed and injured in a 2016 Canby Park arson has been denied by a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge. The lawsuit, filed against Wilmington and two previous mayors and fire chiefs, sought compensatory damages, including for loss of life, lost wages and emotional injuries. While recognizing the case "involves a tragedy," the appeals court's three-member panel said the "plaintiffs failed to allege a deprivation of a constitutional right." In other words, they contend the appeal didn't contain enough factual matter to seek relief and damages. The panel's Wednesday decision is the second time in a year that a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit. In February, U.S. District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika said in her 21-page opinion that the federal civil lawsuit failed to "allege the necessary underlying constitutional violation" for the claims brought forth by the families of three dead firefighters and the surviving firefighters. DELAWARE ONLINE - METERED SITE Florida firefighters create new Chief's Challenge Coin, awards two VIDEO: Firefighters in Alachua County have created new coins to honor the accomplishments of crew members. The second recipient is Captain Karem Scott-Kotb who designed the coins. He was honored for his work to train and recruit new employees. From now on, the coins will be given to department members who go above and beyond. WCJB-TV ABC/CW+ 20 GAINESVILLE More allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccine reported, but overall remain rare The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday that at least 21 people have had a severe allergic reaction after receiving their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. All of the patients have recovered. The reaction, called anaphylaxis, can be life-threatening, and must be treated immediately with an emergency injection of epinephrin, often given via EpiPen. The report included data from 1.9 million people who got the shot in the first week and a half it was available last month, from Dec. 14 to Dec. 23. That puts the rate of anaphylaxis at 11.1 cases per million doses given. For comparison, the rate of anaphylaxis following the flu shot is 1.3 per million, the CDC said. "This is still a rare outcome," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, head of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a media briefing Wednesday. "Right now, the known and potential benefits of the current COVID-19 vaccines outweigh the known and potential risks of getting COVID-19." NBC NEWS California fire department celebrates 145th anniversary From simple beginnings, starting with three hose companies and 75 volunteer firefighters, the Hollister Fire Department can now boast of four dedicated fire stations, each filled with specialized firefighting equipment. The department recently reached its 145th anniversary on Dec. 27. The city was founded when Colonel William Welles Hollister split with his partners in the Flint-Bixby ranch, with Hollister taking the area of the ranch that became the city of Hollister in 1872. The first fire companies in Hollister started immediately after. "Hollister was a sheep rancher and this area was great for growing cattle feed," said Hollister Fire Chief Bob Martin Del Campo. "When the farmers were storing the grain, alfalfa, and hay, there were a lot of fires because of spontaneous combustion. You just did not have the same kind of fire protection that you have now. They needed to be ready to fight fires at the ranch." BENITO LINK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
