Neighboring Lancaster firefighter Brandon Peterson lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday morning, and the Waxahachie Fire Department has asked for prayers in support of his family. Peterson was set to return to Dallas on Christmas Day, after spending time in Disney World with his family. "We ask this Christmas Eve that you remember Lancaster Fire Fighter Brandon Peterson and his family in your prayers. Brandon has been battling an aggressive type of cancer and wanted to spend a few days at Disney World with his family," the Waxahachie Fire Department said in an earlier statement. "They were scheduled to return today and unfortunately Brandon had to be taken to the hospital and is in ICU in Orlando. His wife and 2 young daughters along with other family returned home and his father Eric is staying with him. Please pray for Brandon's health and for God to surround the entire family with His love." WAXAHACHIE DAILY LIGHT The city of Converse expects to have three new ambulances on the road by mid-January after receiving the specially equipped state-of-the-art infectious disease transporters last week. The city spent its $826,393 of CARES (Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security) Act money on the Infectious Disease Response Units, or IDRUs, that feature a ceiling-mounted surface disinfection system, ultraviolet air purifiers, antimicrobial grab bars and a sealed rear cab with driver monitor communication among other technological upgrades. "These are state-of-the-art ambulances that no other city has, outfitted to help our firefighters deal with COVID-19 calls," Mayor Al Suarez said during the city's Dec. 23 rollout of the three IDRUs. "One of the reasons we decided to invest the (funding) from the CARES Act is that we wanted to find a good way to give back and serve all of the community." MYSANANTONIO.COM One person is injured and a vehicle is damaged after a crash in East Dallas involving a Dallas Fire-Rescue engine on Tuesday night. According to the Dallas Police Department, officers responded to a major crash involving Dallas Fire-Rescue Engine 3 on E R L Thornton Freeway just before the Grand Avenue exit at approximately 10:10 p.m. Police said the fire engine was responding to another accident on I-30 when a pickup truck rear ended them. One person sustained a minor injury during the crash, but police did not say whether it was the driver of the pickup truck or a member of the fire crew. The pickup truck sustained significant damage, police said. Police said they believe the wet roads may have played a role in the accident, and they do not believe that the driver was intoxicated. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH The City of Plainview announced the retirement of Fire Marshal Philip Mize this week. After more than 31 years, Mize's last day with the Plainview Fire Department was Thursday. Mize has served the department in different capacities as a firefighter, equipment operator and as Fire Marshal, a position he's held for the last 20 years. Mize has taught investigation and code inspection classes. He also has Master Certifications for Fire Fighter, Arson Investigator, Code Inspections and Peace Officer and is an Advanced EMT. During his time with the department, Mize brought the Shattered Dreams Program to Plainview High School. The Fire Marshal position was vacant for two years before Mize took the job. "I started from scratch and my philosophy of honesty, fairness and integrity allowed me to do the best job possible as the Fire Marshal," said Mize in a news release from the city of Plainview. LAREDO MORNING TIMES Allen Fire Department received its first allotment of 200 COVID-19 vaccines on Monday, after Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd requested the state to place it as a top priority. Boyd has been an advocate for vaccines — both the flu and COVID-19 — for several months throughout the pandemic, even volunteering as a participant in the Moderna vaccine trial study in the summer. "I respectfully request that for the purposes of initial vaccine allocation the Allen Fire Department be considered with the same regard as a hospital within Collin County," Boyd wrote to state officials in early December. The department is now on track to distribute all doses to the city's first responders, long-term care facilities and other local healthcare providers by the end of the day Wednesday, according to a release from the city. However, the delivery schedule for future doses remains unclear. DALLAS MORNING NEWS Local fire and police departments are anticipating a surge in fireworks-related calls on New Year's Eve. Departments in McLennan County which experienced a big jump in illegal fireworks calls during 4th of July this year are expecting a similar uptick Thursday night. "A lot of places are still closed or at limited capacity, so I believe there will probably be some people that will shoot off fireworks a lot more than in years past," said Lance Bracco, Fire Chief for the City of Hewitt. It's illegal to shoot off fireworks within most city limits--even sparklers. In Hewitt, fines can range up to $2,000. Still, Bracco knows people will be popping them off in the city. For those who follow the rules and set them off in the county, he says safety remains a big concern. "Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, don't mix alcohol while you're shooting off fireworks in the county, and don't give them to little kids--people think sparklers are safer, and a sparkler burns at about 1,200 degrees, so it will definitely burn you very bad," said Bracco. VIDEO: Las Vegas Fire & Rescue was battling a massive 2nd-alarm fire at a tire shop near Meadows Lane and Decatur Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. SKY 3 appeared to show the structure fully engulfed as of 4:45 p.m. and fire officials called a second-alarm due to the extensiveness of the blaze. Authorities believed employees at the Econo Lube N Tube were working on a fuel tank on a vehicle when they dropped the tank, causing the fire to quickly spread. A fire spokesperson reported that the fire was out by about 5:30 p.m. but several road closures were in the area as an investigation took place. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue initially reported that everyone inside the tire store was okay but later reported that two individuals had suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire was ruled accidental Wednesday night with an estimated $1 million in damage, according to a tweet by the department. KSNV-TV NBC 3 LAS VEGAS PHOTOS: Dayton's newest mural stretches an entire city block and tells the history of the city's Fire Department. It starts at the corner of Main and Buckeye Streets, then runs down Buckeye, all the way to Dayton Fire Station Number Eleven. For this long mural, Tiffany Clark used classic comic book style, borrowing from mid-century versions of Spiderman and the Fantastic Four. She says it was harder than she expected. "My brain was like, ‘Yeah! Comics! That will be easy!'" Clark says. "But it is not my style and it is a very signature style. It took me a while to figure out how to do it properly." Clark was intentional in what characters she used to tell each story. For example, she recreated a popular 1970s Black Panther comic book cover, but now it's Dayton's first black firefighter, Radolph Tams, who joined the force in 1907. She says she learned a lot of Dayton history over the four months the mural took to complete. WYSO-FM 91.3 A new poster and fact sheet from NIOSH are designed to help educate firefighters about the unique nature of row house fires and how to stay safe when fighting these blazes. Row houses are dwellings connected by shared sidewalls that form a single building. The resources outline typical features of exterior and interior row houses, tactics for fighting fires in these locations, and common areas where fires may spread. Fires that start in the basement of a row house potentially can spread vertically up walls, NIOSH says, extending to an attic or loft as a result of a lack of a fire wall or fire stops. Windows, doors and openings can create airflow paths that help spread the fire. NIOSH recommends firefighters conduct a community risk assessment to understand row houses in their jurisdiction, noting that architectural modernization efforts "may mean the exterior is refaced and interior has a different floor plan." Additionally, materials used for row house modernization or construction may burn more rapidly. SAFETY+HEALTH VIDEO: Union County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Castrogiovanni, a former NYPD officer, was at the scene of 9/11. "I had been looking at those buildings my whole life so to see what happened was just, it's so surreal," Castrogiovanni said. Castrogiovanni worked in and around Ground Zero for about seven weeks and then again during the holiday season that year. "New Year's Eve, we found six firefighters where the Marriot was, and one of them was a guy I went to high school with," Castrogiovanni told Channel 9. "That was the last time I was down there." Castrogiovanni is active but later noticed issues with his breathing and got pneumonia twice. He was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus and lung nodules, among other conditions, as a result of his exposure to toxins at the site. That's put him and fellow 9/11 first responders and survivors, many who live in the Charlotte area, at risk for COVID-19 complications. WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE PHOTOS: North Beach Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD) is pleased to announce the arrival of an iconic piece of the department's history. In 1947, the department took delivery of an FMC John Bean high pressure pumper built on a KB International chassis. The truck served the Twin Beaches communities for a number of years before being sold and lost track of. The department was recently contacted by Robb Johnson, a vintage vehicle collector whose brother discovered the truck in a barn on a piece of property the brother bought in North Carolina. Mr. Johnson's son noticed a faded "NBVFD" on the truck's hood which led the him to do some research, find us and offer the truck back to the department. The truck arrived back in the Twin Beaches courtesy of Tim Jones, a retired DCFD Lt. and close friend to several NBVFD members. "We have set a goal of restoring the truck back to working order in time for the department's 100th anniversary in 2026." SOUTHERN MARYLAND NEWS NET |
