VIDEO: An 18-wheeler trailer full of chopped-up tires caught on fire along a North Texas highway in southeast Dallas County on Thursday morning, officials said. The incident was reported near U.S. 175 and South Beltline Road around 4:15 a.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue crews, who were responding to the incident. Dallas Fire-Rescue officials said it was just a trailer -- no truck -- that was on fire, and no one was at the scene. The trailer had apparently been in the area for the last three weeks, firefighters reported. The trailer was full of tires that had been chopped up, officials said. Crews were able to get the fire under control but had to stay on scene because of hotspots smoldering among the tires. They were waiting on heavy equipment to arrive to help dig through the debris, officials said.

VIDEO: The Harker Heights Fire Department wants to help Central Texans prepare for fires this August. The Department will host a Home Wildfire Safety Class on Saturday, Aug. 24 to teach residents about the dangers of wildfires and how to protect themselves, their families and their property. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Harker Heights Library and Activities Center, located at 400 Indian Trail in Harker Heights. "I think that there is a large amount of complacency with citizens and homeowners," said Chris Mahlstedt, the Assistant Fire Chief for the Harker Heights Fire Department. "They feel like this happens in California or Arizona, it's not going to happen in Harker Heights, Texas, when in fact there's been a number of large-scale major incidents where residents have been directly threatened."

The Laredo Fire Department has received 21 heat-related emergency calls in August, and with Webb County under a heat advisory, staying safe in the scorching weather is crucial. Hernan Martinez from the Laredo Fire Department emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated, wearing loose and light-colored clothing, and avoiding sun exposure. He also advises being aware of heat exhaustion symptoms, saying, "One of the key symptoms we want to look for is if the person starts acting differently—that could be a sign of heat stroke. If the person has a severe headache or any type of headache and they normally don't get headaches, that could be another sign. And, also if they're sweating and they suddenly stop sweating." Martinez urges anyone experiencing a migraine or unusual behavior to call 9-1-1 immediately.

San Antonio fire investigators are trying to determine how a fire started at a home on the city's North Side early Thursday morning. The fire was called in just before 1 a.m. at a home in the 3200 block of Morning Creek, not far from both Thousand Oaks Drive and Jones Maltsberger Road. Firefighters said they arrived to find flames showing from a bedroom window. They quickly put out the fire. Fire officials said the fire was contained to the one bedroom. One person was home at the time and they were able to get out safely. There were no reported injuries. Investigators have not said exactly what started the fire. An investigation team will now try to figure out what sparked the flames. The San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department both responded to the call. The damage to the home is estimated at around $40,000.

VIDEO: Firefighters in Port Jefferson battled heavy rains to get people to safety earlier this week - all while its own firehouse was flooded. Screenshots shared to Facebook show submerged gear and equipment, estimated to be thousands of dollars in damages. The department tells News 12 that at no point was its ability to answer emergency calls impacted, and the cleanup process is already underway. Fire department members say they believe it will be complete by Thursday. The fire department says it answered 25 calls Sunday night into Monday morning during the height of the storm.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing of the Honorable Bill Pascrell Jr., the Representative of New Jersey's 9th Congressional District. First elected to Congress in 1996, the Congressman was a longtime co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. Congressman Pascrell was an unwavering champion of our nation's fire and emergency services. As the father of the Assistance to Firefighters and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant programs, he dedicated himself to ensuring the men and women of America's fire service had the necessary equipment, staffing, and training they needed to protect our communities. A tireless advocate for first responder health and safety, Congressman Pascrell sponsored legislation creating the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer and fought to expand the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) program to cover occupational cancers.

VIDEO: A Virginia family gets closure 45 years later after their loved ones' remains have been identified and returned following the remains being found in the Kentucky River. It was a normal training exercise for the Lexington Fire Department on October 22, 2016. Several dive teams spent the day removing vehicles from the Kentucky River off Old Tates Creek Road near Valley View Ferry. After crews were all packed up, one firefighter noticed something sticking out of the water. "One of my guys comes over and says 'hey what is this?' And I walk over to the edge of the water and there's a human bone laying there," District Chief Christopher Warren recalls with the Lexington Fire Department Station 2. Unknowingly, finding this bone would jump-start an eight-year investigation for Warren.
