Using technology to connect with your community
Author: Jeffrey D. Johnson, CEO, Western Fire Chiefs Association
Navigating and adapting through the current environment has never been more important for first responders. And using technology to improve how we protect the communities we serve is something first responders are very good at. The Neighbors Public Safety Service (NPSS) by home security company Ring, for example, is an excellent free tool for first responders from a proven, reputable company.

Waxahachie Fire-Rescue Capt. Jon Wilson touched many lives in the city that he served, both as a firefighter for more than 20 years and as a barber in his downtown shop when he was off duty. Wilson died Sunday after a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was 52. Wilson leaves behind his wife of almost 29 years, Darla Wilson, principal of the new Max H. Simpson Elementary School which opened this week; and two sons, Luke and Kaleb, who are in their 20s. "Jon was a firefighter's firefighter, a great leader, and a devoted family man," Waxahachie Fire-Rescue said in a post on Facebook. "He served the citizens of Waxahachie, the city he loved, with honor and dedication. Above all else, he was a Christian brother and a true friend. Please keep Darla, Luke, Kaleb and the rest of the family in your prayers."

An Orange County man is safe Wednesday after a man nearby helped rescue him from his burning house. A fire broke out at a home on 1000 John Avenue around 7 p.m. Mike Wells says he was nearby outside the barber shop where he works, when he heard a popping noise. "We went over there to check it out. Next thing you know, we see smoke coming from the garage over there. First instinct is to call 911, and I was calling his son while I was walking over there," Wells said. Wells said they helped rescue a man in a wheelchair from the home before the fire had a chance to spread from the garage to the house. "That was my main concern, I didn't want nothing to happen to him," Wells said. "It's just good that he's out." The fire department says the cause appears to be accidental.

VIDEO: The Lubbock Fire Department has invited the public to show support for firefighter Matt Dawson as he returns to the Hub City from rehabilitation. The Fire Department posted a map of the route they will drive from Lubbock Fire Administration at 1515 East Ursuline Street, to Moody NeuroRehabilitation at 1808 North Quaker Avenue. The escort should begin around 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 13. They are inviting the public to line the escort route in support of Dawson, who has been in rehab at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, receiving treatment for injuries sustained when he and two other First Responders were struck by a vehicle while assisting at a crash scene on Interstate 27 in January. The Fire Department says the route will start at 1515 E. Ursuline St. traveling south on Martin Luther King Blvd, turn west on N. Loop 289, exit to Quaker Ave, and proceed north on N. Quaker.

The McKinney Fire Department is teaming up with mobile medicine provider Integrative Emergency Services in an effort to provide remote care for residents. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, city officials worry that people may be delaying medical treatment for ailments unrelated to COVID-19. "During COVID-19, some people may be shying away from needed medical care. We hope the McKinney Fire Department's telemedicine program will be a way for people to safely seek that help," Fire Chief Danny Kistner said in a news release. The service can be accessed by going online and following the prompts after clicking "I am a patient." Select "McKinney Fire Mobile Medicine" as the "Visit Type." The service is free through Aug. 18 and then will incur a cost that may be covered by insurance. The service is active 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

the wake of last September's explosion in Farmington, which was caused by a gas leak and claimed the life of Farmington Fire Department Captain Michael Bell and injured several others, Governor Janet Mills announced Wednesday that her administration has purchased gas detection meters for twenty fire departments across Maine. The gas detection meters will allow firefighters to detect the presence of dangerous gasses and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and others. Two extra meters were purchased in the event they are needed. The remaining 20 meters will be distributed to the fire departments of Brownfield, Burlington, Cherryfield, Corinth, Danforth, Dixmont, Hiram, Littleton, Machias, Marshfield, Millinocket, Minot, North Haven, North Lakes, Old Orchard Beach, Portage Lake, Roxbury, Washburn, Waterboro and Winterport.

The large overnight fire in Durham may bring back memories of a similar one three years ago in Raleigh. During the historic Raleigh fire, flames spread to nine buildings – it was a much bigger fire. Many people are asking: Why did the Raleigh fire expand so much farther and cause so much more damage than the Durham fire? Sandy Kromenacker, a fire expert in Raleigh, compared this Durham fire to the memorable downtown Raleigh fire in 2017, saying, "Both properties were under construction. Both properties had the same type of construction: Woodframe construction." According to Durham resident Russell Erickson, the flames in Durham on Tuesday night were huge and took about 30 minutes to get under control. The downtown Raleigh fire, however, was believed to be Raleigh's largest in almost 100 years. Officials said 130 firefighters from the city and around Wake County battled the blaze "into the night."

In a town where nearly everyone lives in the same building, COVID-19 has emerged. The Prince William Sound community of Whittier, where around 85% percent of its 280 year-round residents live in the 14-story Begich Towers building, now has six positive resident cases among a family there, according to Jim Hunt, Whittier city manager. It's not the first time COVID-19 has surfaced in the community, but it's the first time the virus has shown up among residents. About a month ago, there were two cases among workers in businesses along the harbor — one part-time nonresident and someone who lived outside of Whittier, Hunt said. Before that, in early June, 11 seasonal seafood processor workers in Whittier also tested positive for COVID-19 and left for Anchorage along with their close contacts to isolate and quarantine.

VIDEO: A historic building in Uptown in Kenosha that houses several businesses and apartments was the scene of a massive fire early Wednesday morning. The fire, which was called in just before 8 a.m., apparently started at the Music Outlet, 6217 22nd Ave., according to Kenosha Fire Chief Charles Leipzig. Leipzig said the investigation was still ongoing and the official cause of the fire was yet to be determined, but it was believed a person inside the record store was burning incense in the early-morning hours and attempted to extinguish the fire alone, but was unsuccessful. That individual suffered what Leipzig described as both a minor burn and smoke inhalation injury, but Leipzig was unsure of his medical condition. "I don't believe he was immediately taken to the hospital," Leipzig said.
