Firefighters rescued man, injured dog from 50-foot ravine in Conroe VIDEO: A 63-year-old man and his dog fell Sunday morning into a 50-foot ravine in Conroe, officials said. The Needham Fire Department responded after 10 a.m. to Lake Drive in the Lake Creek Forest subdivision, where they found Chad McManus at the bottom of the ravine which borders his property. McManus and neighbors said he was searching for his dog Sandi, a 15-year-old retriever that he rescued in 2006. The dog is deaf and has hip issues, which makes it difficult for her to walk. They believe Sandi got through an opening in the fence and got to the close to the edge of the ravine and fell inside Friday night. A large group planned to launch a search for the dog Sunday afternoon when McManus decided to find a way to the bottom of the ravine. That is where McManus located his dog, which was injured and severely dehydrated. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON 22 people displaced, 3 injured after blaze rips through north Austin apartment complex An overnight blaze at a north Austin apartment complex has displaced 22 people from their homes, according to the Austin Fire Department. Flames were ripping through the roof of the Bridge at Terracina apartment complex when firefighters arrived at the scene off the North MoPac Expressway just after 12:45 a.m. Saturday. Additionally, one of the units was fully engulfed in flames, AFD said. "Our main focus, two main focuses was getting water on the fire and evacuating everybody," AFD battalion chief Matt Cox said during a media briefing at the scene. It escalated to a two-alarm fire, but firefighters were eventually able to extinguish the flames. Several people were evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS medics and three of them, two adults and a child, were taken to local hospitals with potentially serious injuries. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN 5-5-5 Safety holds Move Over, Slow Down rally in Lubbock The 5-5-5 organization hosted their first ever Move Over, Slow Down Rally at the Lubbock Regional Public Safety Memorial on Saturday, to teach families to watch out for emergency vehicles and avoid accidents on the road. The event comes 10 months after Lubbock Police Officer Nick Reyna, and Lubbock firefighter and paramedic, Eric Hill, lost their lives while responding to a traffic accident. Matt Dawson, another firefighter, is still recovering from catastrophic injuries today. "Our hope is that this will help people to move over and slow down and watch out for our responders, tow-truck workers, everybody," Susan Hill said. Hill's parents started the 5-5-5 organization, which encourages you to plan five options for safety, five actions to keep you safe, and to tell five people you love them each day. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK Crews spend hours battling Bexar County barn fire Multiple structures were deemed a total loss after a large hay barn caught fire Friday night. Crews were called out to the barn at Loop 1604 and Jett Road around 9 p.m. Friday. At the scene, crews found the barn fully involved. The firefighters began to set up a defensive operation and fought the blaze for at least three hours, according to an official with Bexar County Fire. It is unclear at this time what caused the fire, according to the official at the scene, but the fire did spread beyond the barn and involved other small structures, as well as brush and grass. According to a spokesperson with Bexar County fire district 5, crews will continue to be in the area to monitor the fire as it burns out over the next several days. That decision was made when crews determined that it would burn out quicker than it would take for them to put it out. "As the health authority, we just want to make sure that everybody's out there being safe, it's about being here for the community." VIDEO: Strong Winds Fuel House Fire In Chicago Suburbs Damaging winds caused significant damage around the Chicago area Saturday night, and strong winds may have even sparked a fire in the northwest suburbs. Multiple fire departments responded to the massive house fire on Burning Tree Circle in McHenry. McHenry police say the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived. Firefighters battled the intense flames from the ground and eventually got everything under control. Police say high winds added to the power of the fire, but it's not clear if that was the sole cause. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. The homeowner, who was home at the time, was not injured. The house is considered a total loss, police said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Volunteer Fire Department In Pennsylvania Receives New Underwater Drone For Rescue Efforts VIDEO: A new device for the Crescent Township Fire Department will help to search and rescue as well as search and recovery efforts go quicker. It's a drone for underwater. The fire department will be one of the first in our area to have a remote operating vehicle like this for the water. "Just about anything underwater and you want to see if you can find it," Crescent Township Volunteer Fire Department President John Kriger said. Before they would have to use sonar on boats and send in divers to check it out. Divers can only last about 20 or so minutes depending on the conditions. "We can be in the cold water with this and then when we find our object, we can send our diver down. It limits his time in the cold water," Kriger said. The drone can last up to 3 hours in the water, and pinpoint where the divers need to go. This makes it so divers have to spend less time in the water. It has sonar, a camera, a claw, and is controlled by what almost looks like a video game controller on a boat. KDKA-TV CBS 2 PITTSBURGH Connecticut firefighters' post about stolen flag goes viral On Friday afternoon, someone stole a flag, designed to honor fallen firefighters, from a Middletown fire engine. By Saturday night, thousands of people across the state and across the country knew about the theft, thanks to a deftly written and slightly sarcastic Facebook post by the firefighters' union. The post, from "the men and women of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073" discusses their call for an oven fire on High Street, on the Wesleyan University campus, and says, "something is bugging us." "We're not sure why, but you must have really admired the sweet thin red line flag on Engine 2, because you climbed up on the tailboard and cut it off and stole it.... We have to assume you really liked the flag, or maybe you thought it might be funny or cool, you know, something for the ‘Gram or the Tik Tok. We're a little worried that you might have cut it down to "fight oppression" or whatever. If that was your motivator, you clearly don't understand the meaning behind the thin red line."
