Firefighters and police officers were called to reports of smoke at the Ten19 Apartments on Friendship Lane at about 5:10 a.m. On arrival, crews located the scene of the fire at an apartment on the second floor of Building 2. After firefighters had made the scene safe for entry, first responders discovered two people deceased inside the department, according to the Fredericksburg Police Department. The Texas Fire Marshal's Office was also called to the scene and is "actively investigating the crime," the police department wrote on Facebook. This afternoon, the department posted on Facebook again, saying the two victims had been identified and their next of kin had been notified. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Fire ravages San Antonio home belonging to Vietnam veteran A 78-year-old Vietnam War veteran on San Antonio's southwest side is now without a home to call his own after a massive fire Saturday night. Fire crews responded to the 5800 block of Sandy Valley Drive around 7:30 p.m. where they discovered a house engulfed in flames. The homeowner, John McFall, managed to escape with the help of his grandson and neighbor. "He lost everything right before the holidays. That was home," said Brianna McFall, the adopted daughter of John McFall. San Antonio firefighters fought the blaze for at least three hours. "At the end of the day, I am just heartbroken for him, for his animals because that's all he really had and whatever hurts my grandpa hurts me," Brianna said. She remembers spending summers with the man she knew as Grandpa John while growing up in the house he named after the Dark Knight's lair. "He built that house specifically his way. Made it a bat cave and everything," Brianna said. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Police: Drunk driver crashes into Houston Fire ambulance truck returning from call An alleged DWI driver crashed into an ambulance truck as paramedics backed the emergency vehicle into the fire station driveway in southwest Houston, police confirmed. The call dropped at 7:05 a.m. Sunday from the 6900 block of Bellaire Boulevard near Larkwood Drive. Investigators said the ambulance was returning to Houston Fire Station 51 after a call and had its emergency lights activated. That's when police said an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed on Bellaire Boulevard crashed into the ambulance. Both EMTs were taken to Memorial Hermann hospital as a precautionary measure, but investigators said they were walking around and doing just fine. The ambulance vehicle was towed. The driver was evaluated and determined to be impaired, possibly drunk. He's expected to face DWI charges. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Two displaced after house fire causes heavy damage in southeast Travis County Two people are without a home after firefighters extinguished a house fire in Southeast Travis County on Sunday night. At approximately 8:30p.m., the Austin Fire Department responded to the scene at 3010 Royster Avenue, near the Austin airport. At 9:17p.m., AFD announced the flames had been extinguished and crews were continuing to work at the scene. Officials say they do not yet know what caused the fire but that it appeared to have started in the back of the house and resulted in heavy fire damage throughout. The residents of the home reportedly did not have working phones and were unable to call 911. AFD says this could have caused a significant delay in their emergency response time. No one was injured and the amount of damages has yet to be determined. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN 2 children dead, 4 others seriously injured after SUV crashed into go-kart, College Mound Fire Department says Two children were killed and four others were injured after a SUV crashed into a go-kart Saturday afternoon, the College Mound Fire Department says. Troopers said a go-kart traveling westbound on County Road 167 with six children ages 7 to 12 had been struck in the intersection by an SUV traveling south. When firefighters arrived, one child, a 7-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three children were airlifted to a hospital and two others were transported by ambulance. One of those children, a 12-year-old, later died at the hospital, troopers said. The driver of the SUV was uninjured and cooperated with authorities. KXVA/KIDY-TV FOX ABILENE/SAN ANGELO City of Huntsville issues change order for new fire station, contract climbs to nearly $7.2M Design issues, errors and omissions with the new police and fire headquarters could end up costing the city of Huntsville hundreds of thousands of dollars. In its first change-order since retaining outside counsel, members of the Huntsville City Council on Tuesday approved a $77,027 change-order for the fire station, increasing the project's cost by 1.24 percent. The additions include revisions to a retaining wall and multiple drainage systems. It will also add 26 additional construction days, making March 12, 2021 the revised completion date. The projects were originally scheduled to be completed in February 2021. City officials chose not to publicly comment about the change order, which was discussed at-length behind closed doors Tuesday evening in a near-two hour executive session. However, additional change orders are expected to come forward at future meetings. THE HUNTSVILLE ITEM PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

6-Alarm Fire Contained at California Apartment Building Near University Campus VIDEO: Firefighters battled a six-alarm fire Saturday evening at an apartment building under construction near the University of California campus. The blaze was reported shortly before 6 p.m. and was located in an apartment building under construction and believed to be unoccupied in the 2000 block of University Avenue, two blocks west of the Cal campus. Originally designated as a two-alarm blaze, Berkeley firefighters eventually upgraded the incident to a six-alarm fire, receiving mutual aid from departments in neighboring Oakland, Piedmont, Emeryville, Albany and El Cerrito. The Alameda County Fire Department also assisted. "We can handle two-alarms, so that puts all of our 7 engines, 2 truck companies, 2 ambulance companies and command staff to work," said Berkeley Fire Department Assistant Chief Keith May. "But because of the size of it, and the building and the exposures, we had to call in for additional resources." KPIX-TV CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO Police: DC Firefighter Shot While Tending to Shooting Victim Gunfire struck a D.C. firefighter who was tending to a shooting victim in Southwest Washington Sunday night, police say. A man was shot about 4:20 p.m. in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at the corner of MLK Avenue and South Capitol Street SW, police said. As firefighters and police responded to the shooting, gunfire erupted across the street in the 3800 block of Halley Terrace SE. A bullet struck a D.C. firefighter EMT who was helping the injured man, police said. A woman standing at the scene was also shot in the hand, according to police. The firefighter suffered a graze wound to his leg, News4's Darcy Spencer reports. He was later released from the hospital and is in good spirits, fire officials said. No one else was found injured at the Halley Terrace shooting, police said. John Donnelly, acting chief for D.C. Fire and EMS, said the team of firefighters who responded were shaken up during the shooting, and the fire truck shielded some of them from getting hurt. Fire officials say a fire truck was riddled with bullet holes. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Former '05 Bronco's Football Player Finds Dream Job As Denver Firefighter After playing under the lights at Mile High Stadium, a former Denver tight end has chosen to trade in his NFL helmet for a Denver Fire helmet. Former Bronco Wesley Duke is now one of Denver Fire Department's newest and most energetic firefighters. Duke, who played for the Broncos in 2005, said the decision to become a firefighter was fueled by commonalities between athletics and firefighting, and a desire to give back to the community that supported his career in the NFL. "I've done a lot of good jobs. This is my third professional career, and by far the best," Duke told CBS4's Dillon Thomas. After leaving professional football, Duke worked as an over-the-road truck driver. He got married and had three children in that time. Duke said truck diving paid well, but wasn't as exciting and potentially fulfilling as working a servant to his community. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
