KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Large fire burning in rural area of Atascosa County VIDEO: A large fire burned for several hours in Atascosa County Saturday afternoon, just west of I-37 in the area near FM 3006 and Verdi Road. First responders were called to the area around 1:30 p.m. for reports of a large amount of black smoke. Pictures posted to social media showed large, billowing clouds of dense smoke filling the air. Some social posts suggested the smoke could be seen for 50 miles, with others suggesting it started as a trash fire that grew out of control. The Atascosa County Sheriff's Office said no roads are closed because of the fire. Sheriff David Soward says the fire started at a compound where several members of a family have homes. Soward says the family deals in used vehicles and had a sizable pile of old tires on the property. Soward says he is being told the fire started with tires, and grew. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Lubbock Fire Rescue firefighters begin 2 day marathon for 5-5-5 foundation Pounding the pavement for a good cause. "All of us guys that decided to do this, we're always looking for challenges I mean it's kind of part of being a firefighter. We like the challenge," LFR firefighter Jake McCain said. "This is a physical challenge but its also mental. Just stay focused and know you have to do it every four hours," Lance Baker, another firefighter, said. McCain and Baker are two of the seven firefighters that hit the ground running Friday evening for their 4x4x48 marathon. A challenge inspired by a navy seal to run four miles every four hours over 48 hour, this time to benefit the 5-5-5 foundation. "It's very near and dear to our hearts, they are interested in educating the public about the need to slow down and move over when you see people like us on the roadways," McCain explained. Just after 5 p.m., a Daytona Beach Fire Department truck flipped over after a collision with a silver Pontiac driven by the woman, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Investigators believe the Pontiac was going around 80 miles per hour in the southbound lanes of North Clyde Morris Boulevard when it hit the tail end of the fire truck just before the intersection of West International Speedway Boulevard and U.S. 92, causing it to flip over. The fire truck had left the parking lot of the West Marine store nearby and was struck by the Pontiac as it attempted to cross the southbound lanes of Clyde Morris in order to head north on Clyde Morris. Paramedics took the driver of the Pontiac to HHMC, where she died from her injuries shortly after arrival. WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES - METERED SITE Fire destroys North Dakota fire station, 6 trucks PHOTOS: The Glenburn Fire Department lost its building and six trucks in an early morning fire Saturday. Lance Johnson, fire district board vice president and firefighter, said the department responded to a call at 5 a.m. Area fire departments from Lansford, Maxbass and the Minot Air Force Base assisted. "Smoke was rolling out of the building pretty hard," Johnson said of the scene when firefighters arrived. "Black smoke. Everybody had to go in with air packs." Although the building's walls and roof remain, Johnson said, the structure is considered a total loss due to the damage. The fire also damaged a large pumper truck, a tanker, three grass fire units and a rescue truck. It is unknown at this time whether the vehicles with lesser damage might be salvageable, Johnson said. Area departments have offered to loan equipment in the interim as the Glenburn department seeks to restore or replace equipment. Johnson said the department carries insurance, but it is uncertain whether insurance will cover full replacement costs. MINOT DAILY NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
