KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI ‘I cried in my car for an hour': Texas first responders share winter storm experiences Selena Xie's open letter details Austin-area medics' experience during the deadly winter storms that battered Texas last week. "Early Monday, power shut down for many Austinites. I jumped on an ambulance to start responding to emergency calls at around noon. While our shift started at 10 a.m., the ambulance had been T-boned by a vehicle that lost control," wrote Xie, the president of the Austin Emergency Medical Services Association. Calls tripled for medics and other first responders as Central Texans dealt with treacherous roadways and failing infrastructure. "My first patient who told me that he thought he was going to die, and he was telling me to put him out of his misery, because of the lack of oxygen," Xie told KXAN. KDAF-TV CW 33 DALLAS Texas Continues to Lead the Nation in Home Fire Deaths Just two months into the New Year, 566 Americans have lost their lives to fire, an average of ten deaths a day. Last week, as the winter storm sent temperatures plummeting, Montgomery County Firefighters responded to dozens of fires which left at least 29 homes and businesses with serious damage. Two residents suffered burn injuries but fortunately no deaths were recorded in Montgomery County. Across the region, one person died in a fire in San Jacinto County, while a home fire in Sugar Land claimed the lives of a grandmother and her three grand children, ages 11, 8, and 5. The family had lost power to their home and were using their fireplace to heat the home before going to bed the evening of the fire. Another suspected home heating fire in Austin claimed 3 lives and injured 3 others. WOODLANDS ONLINE Elderly man grabbed tree roots, called 911 after he was swept into the river, Forney police say A 69-year-old man survived a Saturday plunge into the East Fork Trinity River thanks to Forney police officers, firefighters, EMTs and a good Samaritan who stopped for help. Forney police said the man, who was not named, got lost sometime Friday along Highway 80 near Clements Drive. His car got stuck in high water and mud on the north side frontage road near the west bank of the river. Police said the man spent the night in his vehicle before trying to escape, but by then his truck had drifted downstream, partially submerged in water. The elderly man tried to swim to safety but was swept up in the river. He was able to hold on to a tree root system in the water and call 911. "He had just tried to swim across and got swept up," said Forney police officer Laramie Kennedy, who was the first to reach the man. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Bam. We were safe at the distance we were at and then after a while, police came.' KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Police: Connecticut ambulance employee arrested in string of Molotov cocktail attacks A Connecticut ambulance company employee was arrested and charged in a string of Molotov cocktail attacks across the state that targeted two emergency medical services agencies, a volunteer fire department and a private residence on the same day, authorities said. Richard White, 37, of Torrington, Connecticut, was arrested around 10 p.m. on Saturday by Pennsylvania State Police troopers who stopped his car on Interstate 80 near Milton, Pennsylvania, officials said. An arrest warrant was issued for White on Saturday night, charging him with third-degree arson and third-degree burglary. He is being held in Pennsylvania on a $150,000 bond and is awaiting extradition back to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael A. Spera told ABC News on Sunday. ABC NEWS North Carolina fire department's dual driver ladder truck maneuvers through tight spots, features tall ladder PHOTOS: Asheville Fire Department's dual driver ladder truck is a tiller truck or a tractor drawn aerial (TDA). This hook-and-ladder truck features a specialized turntable ladder mounted on a semi-trailer truck. Ladder 1 was purchased for $1.2 million back in 2019. It runs out of the downtown station and responds to more than 2,800 calls per year. Maybe you are wondering why the Asheville Fire Department chose to purchase this type of truck versus a standard ladder truck. This type of ladder truck allows AFD firefighters to more safely maneuver through the narrow streets and challenging terrain of downtown Asheville. These types of trucks are designed with increased maneuverability with shorter wheelbases and impressive turning radius. The tractor drawn aerial truck responds to fires, rescues, car wrecks and EMS calls. Its ladder extends to 103 feet. THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE University of Kansas researchers answer call to improve sleep for firefighters to boost performance and safety A team of investigators at the University of Kansas is collecting data and designing interventions to improve the quality of sleep for firefighters and paramedics in the Lawrence Douglas County Fire-Medical Department. For these first responders, better sleep could improve their quality of life and boost their performance as they encounter life-and-death situations. The stressful work of responding to emergencies demands both physical stamina and quick decision making. "Among the many responsibilities of their job, our EMTs and paramedics have to make drug calculations regardless of the time of day or night or situation, so sleep deprivation is a concern," said Kevin Joles, division chief with LDCFM. "If somebody is sleep deprived and distracted when throwing a ladder against a house and they hit a power line, it could kill them or another firefighter." MEDICAL EXPRESS A Brief History of COVID, 1 Year In On February 20, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the first person in the United States had died from COVID-19 — a man in his fifties living in Washington state. Since then, close to 28 million Americans have been infected with the novel (new) coronavirus, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. Nearly half a million have died, more than in any other country in the world. The year has been one of unspeakable tragedy, but also hope with the arrival of the first COVID-19 vaccines. The development of these highly effective vaccines is "a great scientific tour de force," according to Thomas Russo, MD, chief of infectious disease at the University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in New York. Here's a look back at the most significant U.S. milestones in the pandemic's first year, where we stand now, and the challenges ahead. EVERYDAY HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
