San Antonio Fire Department Chief Hood named 'Fire Chief of the Year' One of SA's very own is receiving national recognition. The San Antonio Fire Department's Fire Chief, Charles Hood, has been named Fire Chief of the Year by the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association. The Metro Fire Chiefs Assoc. brings together fire chiefs from large metropolitan fire departments to share information and focus on major issues affecting policy changes in the U.S. and abroad. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, for the first time in its 55-year history, the Metro Fire Chiefs Association was forced to cancel its annual conference and award presentation. This year's award presentation was scheduled for April 30 in Washington, D.C. Chief Hood will be recognized in a ceremony as Public Safety Headquarters on Tuesday, June 16 at 10 a.m. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Man killed in Corpus Christi house fire Around 8 p.m. Friday, fire crews were called out to a house fire on the 3000 block of Brawner Parkway. Late Friday night, officials with the City of Corpus Christi confirmed that a man was killed in the house fire. When Corpus Christi Fire crews arrived on scene they encountered the home fully-involved in flames in the front portion of the structure. An exact cause is unknown at this time. The incident remains under investigation. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Wildfires burn thousands of acres across Concho Valley, including near Sonora and I-10 PHOTOS: Hot, dry weather combined with high winds have allowed multiple wildfires to burn thousands of acres across the Concho Valley in the past few days. Active fires in the region include the Arroyo Grande Fire burning near Sonora, the 10 Mile Ranch Fire and the McDaniel Fire burning northwest of San Angelo. With multiple large fires burning across the state, Texas Forest Service resources are stretched thin aided by many local volunteer fire departments working around-the-clock shifts to contain and monitor fire activity. As of 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2020 the Arroyo Grande Fire was at 5,300 acres with 65% containment, the McDaniel Fire was at 1,000 acres with 5% containment and the 10 Mile Ranch Fire was at 40 acres with containment unknown according to the Forest Service. Robyn Griffith with the Texas A&M Forest Service said the Arroyo Grande Fire, which at one point had been producing smoke across Interstate 10, was not causing visibility issues for traffic as of Saturday. GO SAN ANGELO/SAN ANGELO STANDARD TIMES Update: Caldwell County volunteer firefighter, younger cousin killed by man who thought he was being chased by aliens, police say Friends and family have created a memorial outside Luling High School to honor the life of Klayton Manning. The school confirming, the 18-year-old had just graduated with the Class of 2020. Authorities said Manning and another teen were found in a remote area northeast of Luling Tuesday night just at 6 p.m. Both had been shot and died on the scene. Officials said more than 50 9mm cartridge cases were found on the scene. Two days later, investigators arrested 34-year-old Bryan Haynes and charged him with Capital Murder. His bond was set at $500,000. Investigators said evidence on the scene indicated the boys were riding a fire department ATV, and were shot trying to get away. An arrest affidavit outlines the details of what happened that night. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Brazos County EMS: 'Call numbers have decreased since COVID-19 started' Local fire departments are noticing a large decrease in call volume since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for EMS calls. In College Station, Fire Chief Richard Mann says compared to March 2019, they have seen a 9% reduction in calls this March, a 28% reduction in April, and 15% in May. Bryan Fire Assistant Chief Joe Ondrasek says they typically run about 950 calls per month. But in the last 30 to 60 days, those calls have dropped 10% to 15%. "Some of that we expect. There are not as many people on the roads so there won't be as many accidents, things like that, so some of that is expected," said Chief Mann. "But what we are seeing is the calls that we do get and what we are hearing from the hospital community as well. When people are going to the hospital, they are pretty sick because they have delayed their care." KBTX-TV CHANNEL 3 BRYAN Houston Fire Department ambulance stolen, driver leads police on short chase A 29-year-old man is accused of stealing a Houston Fire Department ambulance as firefighters were inside a downtown hospital Friday morning. The two EMTs riding ambulance 34 were inside St. Joseph's Hospital on the southeast side of downtown around 3:30 a.m. when the man jumped into the driver's seat and took off. Fire department dispatchers tracked the ambulance through GPS and sent its location to police officers, who caught up with the rig along the North Loop near North Main Street minutes later. Officers got behind the ambulance and tried to pull it over after the driver turned north on North Shepherd Drive, but he initially refused to stop, according to Houston Police Department spokesperson John Cannon. He eventually pulled over near West 34th Street. Officers placed him in handcuffs immediately. His identity was not released since he has yet to be formally charged, Cannon said. HFD recovered the ambulance. ULTIMATE FORT BEND PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

IAFC President Calls on Congress to Support Fire & EMS Departments During COVID-19 Pandemic Chief Gary Ludwig, IAFC President and Chairman of the Board, asked Congress to support local fire and EMS departments as he testified before the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. During his testimony, Chief Ludwig highlighted the importance of local fire and EMS departments to helping victims of COVID-19. "Regardless of whether they are from career, volunteer or combination departments, fire and EMS personnel are providing aid every day to victims of COVID-19. When a person suffering from COVID-19 calls 9-1-1, fire and EMS personnel meet them in their homes, provide aid and transport them to the hospital," said Chief Ludwig. Chief Ludwig's testimony highlighted the challenges that local fire departments face during the pandemic. IAFC.ORG Study: Can blood plasma of recovered COVID-19 patients help prevent infection in others? Survivors of COVID-19 are donating their blood plasma in droves in hopes it helps other patients recover from the coronavirus. And while the jury's still out, now scientists are testing if the donations might also prevent infection in the first place. Thousands of coronavirus patients in hospitals around the world have been treated with so-called convalescent plasma — including more than 20,000 in the U.S. — with little solid evidence so far that it makes a difference. One recent study from China was unclear while another from New York offered a hint of benefit. "We have glimmers of hope," said Dr. Shmuel Shoham of Johns Hopkins University. With more rigorous testing of plasma treatment underway, Shoham is launching a nationwide study asking the next logical question: Could giving survivors plasma right after a high-risk exposure to the virus stave off illness? NBC NEWS Ohio firefighter who fought to protect others from occupational cancer, dies from the same, colleagues say Firefighters across Ohio are mourning the death of Russell Brode, the former president of Akron's firefighter union, who they said died Saturday from what's referred to as "occupational cancer," or cancer he acquired through fighting fires. Brode, 54, spent years pushing for better care and training for Ohio firefighters facing the same risk from inhaling cancer-causing toxins released by smoke and other chemicals. The International Association of Firefighters has said cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters. "In the last month, I've been to three funerals of recently retired firefighters who've died of cancer way too young," Brode told WKYC in 2015 when the Cleveland television station was reporting on cancer risks among firefighters. Two years later, Ohio passed a law allowing firefighters and former firefighters with occupational cancer to file claims for workers' compensation. The law also provided funding to train firefighters on how to prevent exposure to cancer-causing toxins. BEACON JOURNAL Over 150 Firefighters Battle Fire at Vacant Building in Connecticut VIDEO: Over 150 firefighters battled a fire at a vacant building in Shelton. Crews were called to the vacant building on Canal Street around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters said. Firefighters from Shelton, Derby and Ansonia responded to the fire and it took more than 155 firefighters to help put out the flames, authorities added. Due to the age and condition of the building, crews said they utilized a defensive strategy. Embers from the fire spilled over into the Apex Fire Warehouse, according to fire officials. Crews are expected to stay at the scene to clean up and put out hot spots. The building was the old Star Pin Company and it was built in 1870, according to fire crews. WVIT-TV NBC 30 NEW BRITAIN Kidney Disease Creates Unique Bond Between Two Minnesota Firefighters The firefighter's fraternity is a tight one. Due to the many perils of the job, they must rely on each other to remain safe while saving structures and lives. "There is a lot of trust there," said third-generation Elk River firefighter Chad Kreuser. But for Kreuser and fellow firefighter Ryan Wolcenski, it's grown to be so much more: Kreuser learned that he suffers from polycystic kidney disease and in rapid need of a lifesaving kidney transplant. "It's kind of one of those things that you have no control over, so you hope for the best," said Keuser. So when the search began for possible donors, fellow firefighter Wolcenski didn't bat an eye. He quickly volunteered to be tested to see if by chance he would be a suitable match. "I didn't, didn't even hesitate," Wolcenski explained. A couple months later, Kreuser got the news few expected and was both shocked and pleased to learn his kidney was a perfect match. "I got an email from my [medical] team that said, ‘congratulations! you're a match,'" said Wolcenski. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNESOTA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
