VIDEO: Large storage building next to San Antonio home goes up in flames A large storage building next to a home went up in flames, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The incident happened just before 2 a.m. Saturday in the 2100 block of Nueces. Crews said people in the home next to the fire were able to get out of the house without any injuries. SAFD was able to protect the homes surrounding the fire, and eventually extinguished the flames. Arson was called to the scene to investigate. Authorities said there was no power or gas hooked up to the building, so the fire is "suspicious." Around $75,000 in damages were reported. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO VIDEO: Fire engulfs Houston apartment building A north Houston apartment complex was consumed by fire early Saturday. It happened around 5 a.m. in the 1100 block of Greens Road. Crews were called to the apartment and found it engulfed in flames when they arrived. Firefighters were able to douse the fire quickly and were looking for the cause, authorities said. There was no word on if anyone was hurt or how many units were affected. The damage appeared to be extensive. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Related with Photos: Apartment in Houston heavily engulfed in flames Affidavit: Suspect set El Paso house on fire because family didn't follow Bible A 40-year-old man arrested for allegedly setting a West Side home on fire is charged with capital murder after his brother was killed in the incident. The El Paso Police Department says Philip Daniel Mills set fire to a residence located at 6001 Fandango Place on Thursday at 11:30 p.m. He was arrested after police suspected him of causing the blaze. An affidavit written by an EPPD detective says Mills allegedly admitted to setting the house on fire. And, in a recorded statement, claimed to have used gasoline from a weed eater to fuel the fire. Mills poured the gasoline on a sofa in the living room and used a lit cloth to start the fire, according to the document. "Once the sofa caught on fire, he walked outside the house and waited to see if his mother or brother would go outside but they didn't," the affidavit reads. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO Paramedic shortage impacting College Station Fire Department The standard at College Station Fire Department is to have one paramedic on an ambulance and fire engine, but the paramedic shortage is putting a strain on resources. The job of a paramedic is a demanding one that requires hands-on, clinical training. Braden Rohde sees it firsthand, working alongside as a firefighter and EMT. "I was hooked. I saw the way paramedics worked and I thought, 'Man, I want to become one of those," Rohde said. The pandemic delayed his opportunity for training in a time when the fire department needs even more hands-on deck. "I saw that our department needed paramedics and I want to help my department and help the city," Rohde said. "For over a year, we've not been producing paramedics," Chief Richard Mann, College Station Fire Department said. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Follow Up: EMT inside hijacked Houston Fire Department ambulance hailed as a hero An armed man was able to force a Houston Fire Department ambulance off the road on Friday before hijacking it and fleeing police with two people inside, according to investigators. It all began around 2:30 a.m. when a 16-year-old girl was hit by a car as she crossed Fairdale Street near Chimney Rock. The car took off and firefighters from Station 2 arrived at the scene to get the girl to the hospital. The drive was fairly normal until they approached the South Loop and Beechnut around 3 a.m. Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña said Brandon Warren somehow pulled his car in front of the ambulance, got out, and fired several shots on the highway. He then forced the firefighter driving the ambulance out of the vehicle, jumped in and sped away. Explosive Fire Rips Through New Jersey Apartment Complex, Displaces 75 Residents VIDEOS: An explosion rocked a New Jersey apartment building Friday afternoon as fire department crews raced to put out flames shooting out of the structure. A multi-level apartment building in Carteret had heavy smoke and tall flames shooting out from much of the roof by 2 p.m. At one point an explosion could be seen in the middle of the roof and the top floor of the building. Nine hours after the fire began, firefighters were still pouring water on hot spots. By the time fire teams were able to get control of the fire and extinguish most of the blaze, 48 units had been damaged and 75 residents were displaced. A city spokesperson called the building a complete loss. One single mother who lived in the building was devasted to learn everything had been burned. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK Montana man preserves and restores firefighting history VIDEO: You don't have to be in Howie Schneider's presence long to realize he's a firefighter with more than 30 years of service. The family portraits give it away, as most of the Schneiders wear fire suits for a living. He's the third generation and spent more than 10 years at the Los Angeles Fire Department, where his grandfather started. "He had badge number 3, so he was one of the founders of that department. They got over 2,000 guys down there now," Schneider said. Now that badge number three sits in a case and is the oldest known LAFD badge in existence - but that isn't even close to the oldest pieces Schneider has. The bulk of the case is what appear to be fragrance bottles but are actually old fire extinguishers dating back to the 1860s. KTVQ-TV CBS 2 BILLINGS Another Firefighter's Car Stolen Outside a DC Firehouse — This Time at Gunpoint VIDEO: For a second time this week, a D.C. firefighter has been the victim of car theft while on duty serving the public, but this time, it was an armed carjacking. "It's extremely frustrating for people that are trying to help other people to have this happen to them," D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly said. The firefighter walked out of Engine Company 8 in the 1500 block of C Street SE just after 11 p.m. Wednesday and started to get into his car parked nearby, according to the police report. Two young males, possibly teenagers, both armed with handguns approached him, demanded his keys and cellphone, then drove away in his Volkswagen Passat. "I think the police chief said it the other day," Donnelly said. "I'm sick and tired of this, and I agree with him, but our people, we're still going to be serving, but is very disappointing." WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON DC Minnesota lawmakers celebrate high-rise sprinkler bill, plan to push for funding On the day before Thanksgiving in 2019, a fire tore through the 14th floor of Cedar High Apartments in Minneapolis. Five people died in the fire. State fire marshals determined sprinklers could've prevented the tragedy. It led to calls for changes to state and federal law. The high-rise apartment building, however, still doesn't have sprinklers in every unit. "When an alarm goes off, everyone runs away as if something's going to happen bad," said Abdi Mohamed, whose mother died in the fire. "There's no trust in that building because there's no sprinklers. If there's sprinklers, people might be at peace." The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority told us it plans to start installing the sprinklers this fall. It's part of a larger plan to retrofit 24 buildings across the system over the next three years, according to Deputy Executive Director Jennifer Keogh.
