Irving firefighters battle flames and dangerous temperatures while responding to apartment fire Friday's extreme heat forced a larger response in the city of Irving where an apartment building caught fire just before 1 p.m. Fire crews battled both flames and dangerous weather conditions. "The internal temperature of firefighters can rise quickly in these conditions," said Derek Austin, City of Irving Fire Marshal. Firefighters rushed to 3805 N. Beltline Road after receiving a call reporting smoke coming from an apartment building. The extreme heat increased Irving Fire Rescue's response to a three-alarm fire. "Fighting in an environment which can be 800 to 1,000 degrees we have to rotate firefighters through rehab more frequently than we would in other times of the year," said Austin. Irving Fire canteen trucks unloaded several coolers full of water bottles. Firefighters were also handed ice-cold towels which several used to wrap around their heads. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Crews contain Moore Peak Fire in Llano County, more than 700 acres burned Firefighters have wrapped up day three of battling the wildfire in Llano County. On Friday, Moore Peak Fire was deemed the largest active wildfire in the state right now. Crews have been facing brutal triple-digit temperatures while fighting the fire. "It just turns into another brutal afternoon, so, you know, obviously things are very dry," said Walter Flocke, the public information officer for the Texas A&M Forest Service. The Texas A&M Forest Service said the fire burned more than 700 acres of land near the intersection of Highway 71 and County Road 307, west of Kingsland. As of Sunday, its now 100 percent contained. "You don't want to leave a fire too soon and risk something starting up again and escaping when it's this hot, dry, and windy," said Flocke. "So, it is definitely improving." KTBC FOX 7 AUSTIN Follow up: Honey Grove Fire Department asks for auction donations to help injured firefighter The Honey Grove Fire Department is asking for donations of items to use for a fundraising auction for an injured volunteer firefighter. The fire department shared on Facebook that they plan to hold a fundraiser on August 5, for volunteer firefighter Evan Brown who was seriously injured in a crash while responding to a call Sunday. The department is asking for donations for live and silent auctions, a BBQ potluck meal, and desserts, and they ask that anyone who would like to donate items to contact them through Facebook messenger or calling or texting them at (903) 818-3805. They ask that all items are turned in to the Honey Grove Fire Department by August 3. KXII-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV/FOX 12 SHERMAN Retired El Paso firefighter trades his boots for woodworking passion After 10 years with the El Paso Fire Department, Sergio Guillen decided it was time to follow his passion: woodworking. Initially starting as a hobby, Guillen has turned it into a successful business creating mid-century style furniture for his clients. "I found a love for wanting to make more stuff and I became obsessed with it," Guillen said. Guillen first opened his shop from his backyard to create his pieces. He recently got in touch with a vendor from the Continental Dry Goods store about setting up the shop within the building. He now has a space where he is able to build and shape his projects but has now opened his doors to those who want to build their own projects. Guillen began hosting classes to teach hobbyists and curious beginners about the world of woodworking even if they lack experience. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: 5 California homes burn while fire crews work to extinguish in triple-digit heat The Woodland Fire Department is investigating a structure fire that spread to five homes and an outbuilding on Saturday near Lincoln Avenue and Elm Street. It is still unknown what caused the fire but the department said that responders were able to contain it to the homes of origin and prevent the flames from spreading. Woodland Fire said a call came in at 2:03 p.m. about a structure fire. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion but are OK. According to PG&E's outage map 2,246 customers were temporarily without power in the nearby area. PG&E confirmed with KCRA 3 that the Woodland Fire Department asked them to de-energize customer's power to help with the fight against the structure fire. Power was lost at 2:40 p.m. and restored at 5:41 p.m. KCRA-TV NBC 3 SACRAMENTO Over 50 Arizona fire stations replaced cancer-causing foam VIDEO: State officials have expanded their efforts to protect the health of firefighters. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has been replacing the foam used on some fires, which has been linked to cancer. They just wrapped up a 6-month effort with better results than expected. It's called the Take Back and Replace Program. In the first 6 months this year, AZDEQ was able to help more than 50 fire departments in every Arizona county remove and replace this foam. The department originally thought it'd only be able to help around 20. "In general, it's just a dangerous thing to have around," Rural Metro Fire Department Chief Tim Soule said. "Mostly it's used for petroleum based fires and it helps suppress the gases." RMFD was one of the 52 departments AZDEQ helped. They got rid of the "aqueous film forming foam," or AFFF. KTVK-TV 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) Pennsylvania train derailment: Silicone pellets found leaking out of collapsed train cars, police say VIDEOS: Emergency crews responded to the scene of a train derailment in Montgomery County, which prompted temporary evacuations in the area. According to authorities, 16 cars on a CSX train derailed in the area of Stenton Avenue, Flourtown Road and Joshua Road in Whitemarsh Township early Monday morning. Sources told FOX 29 that multiple train cars believed to be carrying hazardous materials derailed in the area, prompting a Level 2 hazmat response. Police later said the only material leaking out of the train cars was silicone pellets, which pose no threat to the public. CSX says the cause of the crash was determined to be weather related. Residents and businesses closest to the derailment site were evacuated early Monday morning out of an abundance of caution and evacuations have since been lifted. WTXF-TV FOX 29 PHILADELPHIA Firefighter in North Carolina who was born deaf receives accommodations for EMT exam in legal settlement For an Advance volunteer firefighter who was born deaf, a lifelong dream can finally come true. A landmark settlement between Austin Freidt, a volunteer with the Cornatzer-Dulin VFD, and the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services will allow Freidt to receive disability-related accommodations to take the NC Emergency Medical Technician exam and become a full-time firefighter. He's wanted to become a firefighter since he was 5 years old. "I was happy," Friedt said about the decision. "I'm very, very excited because I can't wait to get a full-time job." Now at 24 years old, Freidt will be able to take the exam on paper and with a live voice reading it to him. This is the first time the OEMS will provide someone to read the EMT exam to an individual and the first time it will provide a paper copy since moving to a computer-based system in 2018.
