VIDEO: 16 units have fire, smoke, or water damage after a 2-alarm fire at an apartment complex in north Harris County overnight. It was around 3:30am when fire responders with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office (HCFMO) arrived at the Capewood Apartments at 4335 Aldine Mail Road. One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion but was not transported from the scene. Other civilians were treated at the scene. A man we spoke with, was also treated on scene. Firefighters pulled two animals out from the fire and returned them to their owners. The fire was upgraded to a 2-alarm and took about an hour and a half to tap out the fire. A District Chief said a man tried to run back into the burning building to retrieve some personal items and firefighters had to stop him. KIAH-TV CW 39 HOUSTON San Antonio firefighters handled a crash of their own on Sunday. One of the department's fire trucks rolled down the street with no one inside and firefighters chased it down in hot pursuit. The incident happened on Stafford Street near Fire Station 5. A fire official said they'd parked the truck at New Braunfels and Stafford when the truck started rolling down Stafford. The truck rolled a whole block, crashing into a car and a telephone pole, and then kept going before it crashed into a fence and hit a house on the corner of Benton and Stafford. A fire official said SAFD is now investigating to find out what caused the truck to roll away. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Cy-Fair residents may have a new social media platform for safety and security with less spam about lost dogs and rude teenagers, more privacy and meticulously filtered content thanks to a new app from Ring called "Neighbors," and the Cypress Creek Fire Department. Cypress Creek Fire Department, or Harris County Emergency Services District No. 13, has become the 13th fire department in the United States with Ring to partner with the Neighbors app to bring safety-focused content to their local community. Neighbors is a community safety app, similar to Nextdoor or Facebook Groups, where EMS services and law enforcement can post focused content and reach specific residents and neighborhoods for announcements. Simon VanDyk, public information officer for HCESD No. 13, said the idea to collaborate came up during a conference call with other ESDs and Ring, a camera surveillance company, about how the department could request footage from Ring cameras in neighborhoods. HOUSTON CHRONICLE After a year and a half and thousands of hours of preparation, members of the 41st Fire Academy received their official firefighter-paramedics badges today. In an official pinning ceremony live streamed this afternoon, 25 cadets were given their badges. The cadets began their journey to joining the ranks of the Corpus Christi Fire Department back in January of 2019. Chief Robert Roacha had some advice for the cadets: "What I want you to do is I want you to take what you learned here today on top of what you're gonna learn out in the fire stations with the great captains we have, the great Battalion Chiefs, the great firefighters that we have with the Corpus Christi Fire Department, and I want you to take those skills and I want you to bring them forward." KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI A paramedic struck in the head by a foul by last fall at Minute Maid Park is suing the Houston Astros for $1,000,000, citing physical pain and mental anguish. It was a scary few minutes at Minute Maid Park last October when Brian Cariota was hit during Game 2 of the ALCS against the Yankees. The lawsuit alleges the foul ball off the bat of outfielder Michael Brantley was going 108 mph when it struck the dugout paramedic on October 13, 2019. The game came to a halt and fans sat in stunned silence as players and coaches gathered around Cariota. He was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for a traumatic brain injury, brain bleed and facial fractures. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON A 73-year-old man was hospitalized after he was rescued from a burning home early Sunday morning in Fort Worth, fire officials say. Fort Worth firefighters responded shortly after 5 a.m. to residence in the 3200 block of Knox Street, which had been converted into a multi-family home. Firefighters treated the man for smoke inhalation and performed CPR using a mechanical device, fire officials said. The man was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition, according the fire department. The fire displaced the seven residents who lived in the home. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH |

More than a dozen sailors and several civilians have been hospitalized following an explosion on a Navy ship in San Diego on Sunday, officials said. A fire broke out aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard sometime around 8:30 a.m. local time, said officials with the Naval Surface Forces. The blaze escalated to a three-alarm fire, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, which assisted in battling the fire along with base and shipboard firefighting teams. Seventeen sailors, as well as four civilians, are being treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mike Raney, a spokesman for the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, confirmed to ABC News Sunday afternoon. Several of the injuries were said to be serious while others were from smoke inhalation, officials said. ABC NEWS A fight for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder coverage years in the making has ended with a win for Cleveland paramedics, EMTs and dispatchers. A union contract for Cleveland EMS just passed, including about $3.7 million in back pay for employees and mental health language, addressing PTSD. CARE has been negotiating their contract since March of 2016. CARE Union president Paul Melhuish credits continued coverage of the issue from 19 Investigates with helping them achieve the new mental health and PTSD policy. In one of our stories, we profiled paramedics struggling with PTSD and mental health. Melhuish said Cleveland EMS may be among the first in the nation to have an outlined policy regarding mental health coverage specific to PTSD in their contract with the city. It is called "mental health trauma" in the contract. WOIO-TV CBS 19 CLEVELAND There are many statistics available regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, although they aren't necessarily well coordinated at the national level. With so many numbers being available, it can be difficult to understand what they mean, how they work together, and how to apply them. However, experts say a more unified, national approach is essential in getting the pandemic under control. An organization at Harvard University called Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) is attempting to solve this situation. On July 1, the institute released a set of tools, including an online risk-assessment map. This map makes it simpler to make apples-to-apples comparisons between local communities and visualize your actual risk level. According to Perry N. Halkitis, PhD, MS, MPH, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health, "those countries who have been most effective in containing the virus have had unified approaches." KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO VIDEO: Wildlife officers and firefighters managed to come up with a solution after a bear fell asleep in a tree after being tranquilized. Colorado Parks and Wildlife first responded to a home on Alameda Parkway and Bear Creek Road at 9 a.m. on Saturday for a call about a bear in a tree. Twelve hours later, the 350 lb. bear moved down the tree enough for officers to tranquilize it. That's when the hard work started. "One wildlife officer and one from West Metro Fire's technical rescue team climbed up the tree and put a harness around the bear, then built a rope system to safely lower it down," CPW said. Officers say by looking at the bear's teeth, they believe he is 15 years old. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER |
