Firefighter injured battling 1-alarm fire in Houston One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor burns to his hands as crews were battling a 1-alarm fire in northwest Houston on Sunday. According to Captain Arizpe with the Cy-Fair Fire Department, the fire was located on the 6700 block of Satsuma Drive. Multiple agencies responded to the scene where the fire was contained to a home attached to a warehouse. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said no chemicals are reported to be involved in the fire. The American Red Cross is on the scene helping the family of eight who lived on the property. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Former Fire Captain Tino Villasana remembered by Lufkin fire chief Lufkin is mourning the loss of former Lufkin Fire Capt. Tino Villasana, who died Wednesday. Villasana's friends remember him as someone who worked hard and gave all that he could to make others' lives easier. Fire Chief Jesse Moody worked with Villasana for a long time, he said. When Moody first began as a rookie firefighter, he was placed in the same station and shift as Villasana. Moody said Villasana was known for his giving attitude, his love for First Baptist Church in Lufkin, his service as a Gideon and his willingness to help local firemen with their car troubles. "Few have negative things to say. He did the best he could every day," Moody said. He remembers his first years as a fireman and how the department held a Christmas party every year. The parties were in large part paid for by the staff and, as such, fewer and fewer attended, he said. LUFKIN NEWS Over 40 fire units respond to blaze at abandoned home just north of downtown San Antonio Over 40 fire units responded to a two-alarm blaze at a house just north of downtown San Antonio on Saturday evening. The century-old home is believed to have been abandoned. Structural collapses caused by the inferno caused firefighters to retreat and fight it from outside the building at the corner of West Russell and North Flores. The first of two alarms sounded just after 6 p.m. and soon after the first companies arrived, they found ceilings collapsing as flames poured from the roof. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO 24-hour convenience store in New Chapel Hill destroyed by large fire Multiple fire departments responded to a large blaze at a 24-hour gas station early Monday morning in Smith County. The fire started at the CEFCO Convenience Store on State Highway 64 East, across from Chapel Hill High School, sometime before 2 a.m. A store clerk said he saw flames coming from near the ICEE machine and got out unharmed. The damage appears to be extensive, as the building was engulfed in flames. Highway 64 was shut down in both directions for several hours while a fire hose was stretched from a hydrant across the roadway. Traffic is flowing again, according to the Smith County Sheriff's Office. An investigation into what caused the fire is underway. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Austin Fire Department says fireworks are to blame for house fire A home in Austin is a total loss after a firework burned the building. The Austin Fire Department said it was the homeowner's own firework that led to the flames, but the homeowner tells a different version of the story. "I thought 2021 couldn't possibly be as bad as 2020, but it was quick to prove me wrong," said Anthony Ponebshek who owns the home that burned early Friday morning. An illegal firework celebration led to the 1:30 a.m. fire on Putnam Drive on the first day of the new year. Ponebshek admitted he lit a few but said the fire didn't start until an hour and a half later. "I set off a couple at midnight, carefully checked there's no problem. And then I went inside and it didn't occur to me that other people's fireworks were gonna cause a problem for me too," Ponebshek said. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Nueces County fire chief asks public to be mindful of tall grass during county drought A brush fire that erupted along Park Road 22 near the Padre Island National Seashore this morning was triggered by downed power lines, an official said. Nueces County Emergency Services District #2 Fire Chief Dale Scott said they received report of the fire at 11:43 a.m. After responding within ten minutes alongside the Corpus Christi Fire Department, they soon realized this fire would take longer to extinguish. "...there were several downed power lines that were still energized," Scott said, adding that they had to contact AEP. "I don't know if it was a combination of the wind we've been having, and then the cold temperatures, but something caused the line to fail." In other areas within Flour Bluff, Scott said fires are continuing to come up. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

3-Alarm Fire In California Partially Destroys Strip Mall VIDEO: A strip mall in Moreno Valley is partially destroyed after a fire broke out late Friday night. The fire started around 11:30 p.m. on Friday at Indian Street and Sunnymeade Blvd and fire crews spent several hours battling the flames. As firefighters were working, part of the second story collapsed. "When the building started to show signs of collapse, we went to a defensive posturing," said Cal Fire Battalion Chief Alex Elward. "We ordered a third alarm because we knew this fire was going to evolve, which it did." Fire crews are still assessing the damage. At least 17 businesses are impacted by the damage, including a church that was mostly spared. The cause of the fire is under investigation. KCBS-TV CBS 2 LOS ANGELES Dumpster fire helps New Mexico town say good riddance to 2020 VIDEO: Most everyone would agree 2020 was a dumpster fire. A town thought that a dumpster fire was, in fact, the perfect way to say farewell to the past year. "Tonight, we're basically just saying bye to 2020 in a different way," Fire Chief Brett Ruff said. "Tonight we are having a literal dumpster fire in Belen," Mayor Jerah Cordova said. The message isn't hard to miss. Goodbye 2020. "That's what we're doing, to just get rid of all our trash. That's the way we kinda look at it!" Ruff said. The mayor of Belen and fire department invited residents out to watch this year go up in flames. "They're driving up to give us their old calendars, some of their paper masks, that type of thing. Just to burn it off and just say bye to 2020 and hello to 2021," Ruff said. WEBMD Georgia Artisan turns wood salvaged from 2019 downtown Macon historic house fires into furniture They say one man's trash is another's treasure. Three homes on High Street in downtown Macon went up in flames on a Wednesday night in 2019, sending five firefighters to the hospital. "It was a house under renovation that wasn't being occupied and it was a pretty bad fire. It totaled that house. It totaled this house," said Andrew Eck while pointing to the remnants of a downtown Macon home. Two of those structures were considered a complete loss, but now, over a year later, the wood from those homes is being salvaged and used to make furniture that will live on in other houses. Eck is the owner of Blight Busters, a demolition business. Blight Busters is working to tear down the houses severely damaged in the High Street fires without bulldozers and excavators so the wood and other materials from the homes can remain intact. WMAZ-TV CBS/CW+ 13 MACON Hall of Flame Fire Museum in Arizona is one of area's best-kept secrets Chicago-area industrialist George F. Getz Jr. and his wife, Olive Atwater Getz, were driving through Wilmette, Illinois, when they saw a broken-down fire truck on the side of the road. George casually remarked he would like the 1924, Type 12 American La France fire engine. Considering the Globe Corp. chairman had everything, Olive surprised him with the old fire engine for Christmas in 1955. The gift led to a hobby on his part of collecting antique and historic firefighting equipment. This resulted in his creating the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting, now located in Phoenix, in 1961. It houses the world's largest collection of firefighting equipment and memorabilia. "Somehow they kept it a secret from him," said Mark Moorhead of the Hall of Flame Museum about George's present. "It was really, basically, intended as a gag gift, but he went nuts. He loved it. He gave the neighborhood kids rides in it. He just really became enamored of firetrucks. He started to collect more and more and more of them." SAN TAN SUN NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
