Kevin Earl Spurlock, 31, is charged with arson and terror threat of family or household. His bond has not yet been set. The fire at the Briarwood Apartments started around 6:15 a.m. Sunday. The complex is located in the 3200 block of N. 3rd Street, between Willis and Mockingbird. Tim Porter said he heard a loud bang and walked out to see massive flames. The fire department said it was upgraded to a 3rd alarm around 6:30 a.m. Crews worked until 4 p.m. to extinguish it. They will remain on scene for the remainder of the day. The smoke could be seen from blocks away. The fire department said "crews were forced to make a defensive, exterior attack." At least 60 residents and 21 apartment units were affected by the fire. KTXS-TV ABC 12 ABILENE Update: Fire that gutted century-old Mason County courthouse was set deliberately; suspect in custody Only the stone walls were standing Friday after fire gutted the more than century-old Mason County courthouse overnight. The fire that broke out Thursday night, evidently on the second floor of the 111-year-old building, was set deliberately, authorities said Friday. A man was taken into custody in connection with the fire outside of Mason, Mason County Judge Jerry Bearden said early Friday afternoon. The man is also believed to have set a fire at a house in Mason before the courthouse fire broke out, he said. It wasn't clear Friday evening whether the suspect to whom Bearden referred was the same man who led dozens of officers from multiple agencies on a high-speed chase on Interstate 35 from Georgetown to the southern edge of Waco. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Corpus Christi Fire Department vaccinates more than 1,000 seniors in 7-day period Beginning at a modest 108 vaccinations when the program was first announced on Jan. 26, the city of Corpus Christi's "Saving Our Seniors" program or SOS has since administered at least 1,288 vaccinations to members of the elderly community in the past two weeks. In a Jan. 27 press release, the city implied that a plan was in the works to further expand the SOS program. Chief Robert Rocha with the Corpus Christi Fire Department said his staff is now coordinating with seven of the city's senior centers to help more residents. The locations are being utilized to vaccinate seniors who would normally drive up to pick up meals for themselves. He said shots are being administered to seniors in their car while they wait for their meal, although Rocha added there are still some who attend senior functions who have not been vaccinated. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Follow Up: Bullard Volunteer Fire Department holds ‘push-in' ceremony for new engine The Smith County Emergency Services District 2 and Bullard VFD received a new fire engine. "The Smith County citizens saw, back in 2006-2007, to vote in the Smith County ESD2, Emergency Services District. And those guys collect some tax dollars from homeowners and property owners in the county for the purpose of providing emergency services in Smith County," said Bullard Fire Chief Justin Walker. "Those funds have been used in multiple different departments, and this time, it was Bullard's turn to get a new truck, to replace an aging one." Sunday afternoon they held a "push-in" ceremony for their brand new fire engine. Walker said push-ins date back to the 1800s when fire equipment was drawn by horses, and it was hard to back in equipment. The firefighter would break the horses free and push in the equipment by hand. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Get ready for an active West Texas fire season It is just the beginning of the West Texas fire season, it peaks from mid-March to mid-April, and state firefighters are predicting a very active fire season this year. Thanks to a La Niña weather pattern, it's been exceptionally warm and dry. Brad Smith used to live in Odessa, and is now the Predictive Services Department Head for the Texas A&M Forest Service. He thinks around half a million acres will burn across the state this year, "this year will be worse than average because of the presence of La Niña and what we call the Southern Plains wildfires outbreak's, these occur during La Niña years and they generally produce 20 times more acres of fires than normal years. The winds are stronger, the temperatures are higher, it's just the extreme fire weather conditions that produce these very large fires," Smith said. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA Wichita Falls Fire Department stresses the importance of practice days for academy recruits The Wichita Falls Fire Department is looking for new recruits and is opening its training field for those thinking about making the job a career. Before they get ready to welcome their 69th academy class, they're focusing on preparation. "This time we're gonna host three different practice sessions out at the drill field where candidates will be able to get hands-on with the station, be able to understand the skills they need to succeed, and understand the sense of urgency," said Fire Chief Ken Prillaman. To be admitted to the academy, applicants will have to complete a Civil Service Exam, however, the practice days are specifically geared toward the physical test because of its unique nature. "If you're not familiar with cupping a fire hose or things like that, it really does provide a benefit for people to be able to excel during this physical test," said Training Battalion Chief Jason Baber. KTXS-TV ABC 12 ABILINE Remembering the 1933 Nebraska hotel fire, the deadliest incident ever for Omaha firefighters About 10 p.m. on the night of Feb. 8, 1933, guests staying on the fourth floor of the Millard Hotel in downtown Omaha began to notice flames licking out of windows on floors below. Minutes later, the hotel's lights went dark. By 10:04 p.m., the first alarms were called into Omaha fire stations, according to World-Herald archives. Firefighters climbed the ladders and directed jets of water through upper-story windows. Any water that missed froze immediately, coating surfaces and forming dangerous slicks in the streets and alleys below. The temperature that night plunged to minus 15 degrees, and many firefighters later suffered frostbite from the spray. About 11 p.m., parts of the roof and upper floors collapsed, possibly because of an explosion in the hotel's paint shop, and the outer north wall blew outward. Firefighters on ladders and in the alley were crushed by a searing hot blast of bricks and debris. OMAHA WORLD-HERALD Indiana fire department hires sole female firefighter, wants department to mirror city The newest Franklin firefighter is the second female firefighter in the city's history, and the first in a while. Diversity is a priority of the Franklin Fire Department, and one that is starting to come to fruition. Casey Whitaker is not new to Franklin or public safety. She worked for Seals Ambulance Service since 2016, and was an EMT for nine years. In her new position, she takes a different ride and a different role at the same scenes she has responded to for years. The step toward diversity is part of a city-wide effort to make the Franklin Fire Department look more like the city's general population, said Matt Culp, Franklin's fire chief. To accomplish that, 24 more women and a few racial minorities would need to be hired for the crew of 48 full-time firefighters to mirror the city, the population of which is made up of 51% women and 5% racial minorities, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. "We are trying to be as proactive as possible," Culp said. DAILY JOURNAL UK coronavirus strain is doubling in the U.S. every 10 days, study finds The mutant coronavirus strain first identified in the United Kingdom remains at low levels in the United States but is doubling its reach approximately every 10 days, according to a study published by researchers on Sunday. The study bolstered modeling done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which predicted last month that the more contagious variant could be the dominant strain in the U.S. by March. The U.S. still has time to take steps to slow down the new virus strain, the researchers wrote, but they warned that without "decisive and immediate public health action" the variant "will likely have devastating consequences to COVID-19 mortality and morbidity in the U.S. in a few months." The research, funded in part by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health as well as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, was posted to medRxiv, a preprint server, and has not yet been peer-reviewed.
