An elderly man died in a house fire in southwest Houston Sunday night, according to Houston firefighters. This happened around 10:15 p.m. at a home on Trail Lake Lane, a few blocks east of South Post Oak. When Houston firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the victim inside of the home. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Although they are investigating this is an accidental fire right now, HFD Arson and HPD Homicide units were called to the scene in case anything suspicious comes up. "He was very much loved in the community, everybody in the neighborhood and on the street looked after him. This is really a sad time for the neighborhood," Nicole Allen, who grew up with the victim, said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON PHOTO: As of 6:30 Sunday night, the Texas A&M Forest Service said 100% of the wildfires burning in the Texoma area have been contained. Firefighters report 6,300 acres burned in what they call the Arrowhead Fire in Clay County, and another 2,300 acres were scorched in the Electra Complex fire in Wichita County. No official estimates have been released yet of the total damage to the town of Electra and surrounding areas, but there are reports that multiple homes may have burned. KTFW-FM 92.1 GLEN ROSE The Wall Volunteer Fire Department will be able to buy a new fire truck that will double the amount of water firefighters can take with them to a fire, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority. According to an LRCA press release, the grant, along with more than $240,000 in matching funds from the department and other supporters, will allow for the purchase of a 3,000-gallon fire tanker/pumper truck to serve the Wall area, along with the other nine volunteer fire departments in Tom Green County, the San Angelo Fire Department, Goodfellow Air Force Base and several counties the department stands ready to help with mutual aid. "In our district, we border San Angelo, so we have access to some of their fire hydrants, but we don't have any hydrants that are actually in our district," Wall VFD Assistant Fire Chief David McIntyre said in the release. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO Residents at an apartment complex in Northeast Dallas have been displaced after a 2-alarm fire forced them to evacuate on Sunday. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, units responded to a 911 call for a structure fire at an apartment complex, located at 11991 Audelia Road, shortly before 6 p.m. Officials said when firefighters arrived on location, they saw flames coming through the roof of a large two-story apartment building. A second alarm response was requested, and crews were able to utilize ground lines and master streams in an effort to put out the blaze, officials said. Officials ultimately declared the fire extinguished around 7 p.m. According to officials, firefighters were able to complete a primary search of the building as most residents had self-evacuated prior to their arrival. Officials said there were no injuries reported as a result of this fire. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH We are so fortunate to have so many great first responders across East Texas but this past weekend the amazing people at Hallsville Police Department, Fire Department and Harrison County Sheriff's Officer truly went above and beyond the call of duty. It's stories like this that remind everyone that we need to back the blue and support these amazing people that are doing everything possible to keep our communities safe. This past weekend numerous officers, firefighters, and deputies all worked together to take kids Christmas shopping whose families are going through financial hardship. It all started with Investigator David Burrows with the Hallsville Police Department asking for submissions for kids online that might be in need of a program like this. At first this was only going to be 3 kids because this was being paid for by the officers, firefighters, and sheriff deputies. KNUE-FM 101.5 TYLER Thousands of dollars worth of food was destroyed after a storage freezer caught on fire in a warehouse on Sunday night. According to the San Antonio Fire Department, it happened around 9:30 p.m. A SAFD battalion chief said the call was initially for a smoke investigation on Merida Street, west of downtown. Firefighters traced the smoke to a warehouse freezer. The fire was quickly put out. The chief estimates the fire damaged around $150,000 worth of food. The cause of the fire is unknown. A massive emergency response was called to a marina in Rhode Island on Friday after two large boats went up in flames. Crews responding to a report of a blaze at Hinckley Yachts in Portsmouth found two boats engulfed in heavy flames. The vessels, a power boat and a sailboat, had a combined value of $10 million, officials said. Video from the scene showed a massive plume of black smoke billowing into the air as the fire raged and firefighters scrambled to stop the blaze from spreading. "We did have water issues at first. We had some water and then we lost our water supply," said Portsmouth Fire Chief Paul Ford. "We had to call Newport water and they came down and did some adjustment that greatly helped." Onlookers watched in disbelief as the blaze transformed the boats into a raging inferno. WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON People who had their lives ripped apart in mere moments by violent and unforgiving tornadoes over the weekend are now dealing with a new reality -- seeking the basic needs of food and shelter while surrounded by devastation and uncertainty over the fate of their neighbors. In the small town of Dawson Springs in western Kentucky, about 75% of the community was wiped out and replaced by "chaos," Mayor Chris Smiley said Sunday. "It's the worst thing I've ever seen," said Smiley, who's lived in the town for 63 years. "It's just devastating." The line of severe weather that moved through the central and southern US late Friday into Saturday left at least 100 people feared dead. The storms spawned at least 50 tornadoes reported across eight states, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center. CNN Six people were killed Friday when a portion of an Amazon building collapsed in downstate Edwardsville during a severe weather outbreak, state and local officials said Saturday, as the operation shifted to a recovery mission. Multiple workers were killed when a portion of an Amazon warehouse, located in the 3000 block of Gateway Commerce Center Drive South, collapsed during what the National Weather Service confirmed as an EF-3 tornado, according to local fire authorities. At a news conference Saturday evening, Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford stated that one person was injured, and 45 people were rescued. At least one person was taken to an area hospital, and others suffered minor injuries that were treated at the scene. Officials have not yet determined how many victims were hurt in the collapse or how many are still unaccounted for as workers were in the midst of a shift change when the tornado struck at about 8:30 p.m. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO A Northern California state senator plans to introduce legislation that would add 356 permanent firefighters and 768 seasonal firefighters to the state's force. Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, said Friday that the legislation would set new per-engine minimums at Cal Fire and would launch a staffing study to help prepare the department for fire conditions that are projected to keep getting worse in the years ahead. At a cost of $214 million, McGuire called the proposal a "critical first investment." "This is a down payment," he said. "More is needed." McGuire announced the proposal Friday morning on the north steps of the state Capitol, flanked by a few dozen firefighters wearing black t-shirts identifying their union, Cal Fire Local 2881. The senator and union leaders said firefighters often spend 40 days or more deployed at fires, harming mental health and impacting families while driving up state overtime costs. THE SACRAMENTO BEE - METERED SITE In the feud between two famous New York institutions, Marvel has officially chosen a side, and the result is not surprising for anyone who's read up on current Marvel continuity regarding Spider-Man, Daredevil, and the greater Marvel Universe at large. It's no secret that plenty of Marvel's major heroes are based out of New York City (and plenty of villains appear in NYC as well), which means both the police and firefighters of the city regularly come into contact with the Avengers, the X-Men, etc. But in Devil's Reign #1, it's clear that not all of these interactions are positive. In the past few issues of Daredevil, the Man Without Fear recently uncovered drastic corruption within the New York Police Department. Even so, he was still under arrest (even after his heroic actions), but the Avengers interfered in a very public manner. In particular, Spider-Man called out the police for attacking a hero when they should've been investigating their own organization. SCREEN RANT |
