Bryan man killed in apartment fire A Bryan man was killed Sunday night after his apartment caught on fire, authorities confirmed to KBTX. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene just after 10:00 p.m. in the 2700 block of Evergreen Circle near Peppertree Drive. When firefighters arrived they found smoke coming out of the 2-story fourplex building and immediately attempted a rescue of the 68-year-old victim. Efforts to save the man were unsuccessful but his wife and another occupant of the apartment were able to escape, said a fire department spokesman. The cause of the fire is under investigation but firefighters believe it was caused by a cigarette and fueled by oxygen tanks inside the apartment that belonged to the victim. No names are being released at this time and it's unclear how many other apartments were affected by the blaze. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Brewster County: Firefighters Battle 600-Acre South Rim Fire in Big Bend National Park Firefighters continue to work to contain a 600-acre wildfire in Big Bend National Park that has been burning for at least three days. The National Park Service said Sunday that the South Rim Fire, which was first spotted on Thursday, quieted down overnight and did not make its way into the Chisos Basin and is backing down the Boot Canyon. Firefighters continued to focus Sunday on active spots along the edges of the fire. The initial fire encompassed about 15 acres, but aided by high winds, warm temperatures and low humidity, the South Rim Fire had spread to about 600 acres by Saturday and the Park Service estimated it would continue to grow. By 4 p.m. Saturday, the fire had reached the summit of Emory Peak and could be seen from the Chisos Basin developed area about 2,000 feet below, the Park Service said. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Fire destroys home, damages another on East Side, San Antonio firefighters say VIDEO: A fire on the East Side completely destroyed one family's home and damaged another neighboring residence overnight, according to San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened around 1:58 a.m., Sunday, in the 2800 block of Lake Arbor. Firefighters said when they arrived on scene, they saw flames shooting through the roof of the home. The fire spread throughout the structure and fire crews were extinguishing the flames from several areas. Some of the flames also caught a neighbor's home on fire, according to SAFD. Firefighters were eventually able to contain the fire, but the home was a complete loss after the roof collapsed. The neighboring structure was damaged but not a complete loss. No injuries were reported and arson is investigation the incident. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO New Emergency Operations Center, south-side fire station floated to Abilene's council A new Abilene Fire Department station located on the city's south side and a new Emergency Operations Center are big-dollar goals for Fire Chief Cande Flores and Vincent Cantu, emergency management coordinator. The new station and EOC headquarters, both floated at a recent Abilene City Council retreat, have at their core safety and preparedness, Flores and Cantu said. Neither is inexpensive. A new EOC weighs in at an estimated $2.5 million, while a new fire station could be almost $5.6 million, with up to $1 million in personnel costs. In the case of a proposed Fire Station 9, a "ton of growth on the south side of town" prompts the need, Flores said, including the emergence of new businesses. "We've got to be able to support that area as far as response capabilities go, and that's part of it," he said. The city's emergency center, presently located in City Hall, has its own needs for expansion and updates, Cantu and Flores said. The Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management confirmed Saturday a wildfire in the vicinity of Cassel Way, Kelly Road, and 1441 in Bastrop County. Kelly Road East from Cassel Way and west of Kelly Road to Hwy 21 had initially been evacuated with potential structural damage a major concern, however, as of early Sunday morning, the evacuation order has been lifted. Detroit Fire Department truck shot at while leaving station, no injuries VIDEO: According to Police on Saturday around 9:41 pm near Dexter and Oakman, the Detroit Fire Department received a call and was heading out. Authorities say as they were trying to exit the driveway, a dark-colored Chevy Sedan was blocking their path. After using the fire engine's air horn, the car moved out of the way. He was last seen wearing an orange shirt or jersey. The passenger was described as a black woman, light complexion and wearing a turquoise top. Police say this is an on going investigation. WJBK-TV FOX 2 DETROIT Report identifies California fire department's shortcomings leading up to deadly Porterville Library Fire PHOTOS: A 136-page report on the tragic Porterville Library Fire found that staffing shortages, a lack of training and communication problems may have contributed to the deaths of two firefighters in February 2020. "Unfortunately, these issues continue to be far too common across the country to simply focus on one organization," the report concluded in part. "Until all fire service leaders begin to resist complacency and implement positive change, we will continue to lose our valiant firefighters." Fire Capt. Ramon Figueroa and firefighter Patrick Jones died in the massive fire that erupted on Feb. 18, 2020, in the children's section of the Porterville Library, located on the same block as the Porterville Fire Department. In the aftermath of the deadly blaze, Porterville Fire Chief Dave LaPere called for a Serious Accident Review Team, or SART, to investigate the incident so that other fire departments could learn from the tragedy. VISALIA TIMES DELTA - METERED SITE Thin red line: Wisconsin trucker, firefighter pursues dual passions PHOTO: It's not uncommon for someone to have to choose between making a living and pursuing something they are passionate about. Dan Ravenhorst of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, has found a way to do both, driving his 2019 Mack Anthem 64T and volunteering at the city's Township Fire and Rescue Station 1. "I bought (the truck) in March 2020, so I've had it a year now," Ravenhorst said in an interview with The Trucker. "It's my first brand-new truck." Like his previous truck, a red 1994 Freightliner Classic XL, the black Mack is customized with tributes to firefighters. "I decided to go with the ‘Thin Red Line' theme," he said. "Black is the color of mourning, and that thin red line (in an American flag motif) represents fallen firefighters." The logos of fire departments around the world — including the fire department that Ravenhorst is a part of — incorporate the Maltese cross emblem. HELENA INDEPENDENT RECORD Law enforcement, first responders in Virginia honoring public safety telecommunicators this week For the rest of the week, towns, cities, and counties around southwest and central Virginia are celebrating the men and women who serve as 911 dispatchers, the unseen heroes of public safety. According to the City of Roanoke, Congress proclaimed the second week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in 1991. Thirty years later, telecommunicators, dispatchers, and communications operators across the country not only answer hundreds of thousands of calls placed to 911 centers, but they also use phones, radios, and computers to offer support to law enforcement, firefighters, EMS workers, and other government field personnel. Even though National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week runs from Sunday, April 11 through Saturday, April 17, numerous police departments, sheriff's offices, fire departments, and rescue squads across the region have already posted celebratory and supportive messages for their dispatchers.
