COVID-19 takes a heavy toll on Houston Fire Department This week marked the third COVID-19 related death of a Houston firefighter since the pandemic began. Capt. Tommy Searcy died from coronavirus complications after being hospitalized in The Woodlands. "It's been an extremely tough time and an extremely dark period in our department's history," HFD Chaplain Bobby Delgado said. Delgado is one of HFD's 16 chaplains who provide emotional and spiritual support to its department. He said their job is to be there for the more than 3,700 firefighters when they're most needed. "Just this morning I was creating a list, a care list, on who from Capt. Searcy's crew and friends in the department closest to him do we need to touch and check on to make sure they're alright," Delgado said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Longview to remove rail cars used for firefighter training near Stamper Park Stamper Park in Longview will have a major aesthetic change Friday when the city removes the train cars adjacent to the park. The Longview Fire Department training facility across the street dates back to the 1950's. The rail cars were added in the late 90s to train firefighters how to respond to a derailment. Since then, the site had hosted firefighters across the country to train at the facility. On Friday, the cars will be moved to a new location. The move is a part of a bond package that included a new training center and renovations to Stamper Park. The rest of the training facility will remain until the new center is complete. The new property, near the Longview Business Park, is on a 90-acre plot of land and is farther away from neighborhoods. KYTX-TV CBS 19 TYLER Supporting Victoria Fire Department During 9/11 Is Easy All across the country tomorrow, Americans will join each other, if only in their hearts and prayers, to honor our fallen 343 FDNY brothers and sisters who lost their lives during the 911 attacks. There are some, like our Victoria Fire Department that will do more. It's been 19 years since the 911 attacks that claimed an estimated 3,000 innocent lives. It is a day this nation will not soon forget and our amazing Victoria Fire Department has found a way to honor their brethren in a very meaningful way. They've invited us to show our support as well, and it's as easy as turning on our computers and watching their Live Facebook ceremony on the Victoria Fire Department Facebook page that you can access here. The ceremony will begin at 7:45 am and will begin with a presentation of colors by the Honor Guard followed by the National Anthem with moments of silence, alarms, and the playing of Taps. KTXN-FM 98.7 JACK COVID-19 pandemic forces El Paso Fire Department's 9/11 memorial ceremony to go online The El Paso Fire Department's annual remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be closed to the public this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's ceremony will live stream at 9 a.m. Friday on the EPFD Facebook page. The public is asked to share its photos and tributes on social media with the El Paso Fire Department, which will select and share some of the images. Friday marks 19 years since the terrorist attacks that killed more than 2,977 people, including more than 400 firefighters and law enforcement officers, when hijacked airliners crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The El Paso remembrance is closed to the public due to health safety restrictions because of COVID-19, which has killed more than 450 people in El Paso and more than 190,000 in the United States this year. EL PASO TIMES Chemical plant fire in Williamson County now 99% contained, officials say A chemical plant fire just south of Walburg prompted shelter-in-place orders that were lifted after about three hours Thursday afternoon. Williamson County officials said Friday the fire at the CPI Products plant on Farm to Market Road 1105 is 99% contained, and fire crews are making sure a smoldering palette of cardboard doesn't flare up. Officials also said the State Fire Marshal is meeting with state environmental quality personnel to make sure contaminated water doesn't make it down stream from a nearby creek. No one was hurt, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office said. The county previously asked all residents within a one mile radius of 4100 FM 1105 to shelter inside, close all doors and windows and shut off heating and air conditioning. Around 6:30 p.m., the county said those north of the location and upwind of the fire do not need to shelter in place. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

U.S. remembers the 9/11 terrorist attacks as the pandemic changes tribute traditions Americans are commemorating 9/11 with tributes that have been altered by coronavirus precautions and woven into the presidential campaign, drawing both President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden to pay respects at the same memorial without crossing paths. In New York, a dispute over coronavirus-safety precautions is leading to split-screen remembrances Friday, one at the Sept. 11 memorial plaza at the World Trade Center and another on a nearby corner. The Pentagon's observance will be so restricted that not even victims' families can attend, though small groups can visit the memorial there later in the day. Trump and Biden are both headed — at different times — to the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Trump is speaking at the morning ceremony, the White House said. Biden plans to pay respects there in the afternoon after attending the observance at the 9/11 memorial in New York. CNBC Chemical plant fire in Texas under control; shelter-in-place order lifted A chemical plant fire just south of Walburg prompted shelter-in-place orders that were lifted after about three hours Thursday afternoon. The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter the fire is at a plant on FM 1105. A CPI Products facility is located there. No one was hurt, the sheriff's office said. The county previously asked all residents within a one mile radius of 4100 FM 1105 to shelter inside, close all doors and windows and shut off heating and air conditioning. Around 6:30 p.m., the county said those north of the location and upwind of the fire do not need to shelter in place. By 8:30 p.m., the shelter-in-place order was lifted for all residents, according to the county. The fire is now under control, but firefighters will continue to monitor hot spots overnight. Assistant Fire Chief with the Weir Volunteer Fire Department Kevin Gehrig gave an update Thursday night. He said it was one of the largest fires they've had in the area because of the building size and its contents. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Remembering 9/11: Firefighters remember horror, heroism during terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001, is one of those days where most people can remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard about the terrorist attacks that Tuesday morning. For those in the fire service today, and especially if they were in the fire service on that particular day, the memories run deep. Firefighter Bruce Meier, now a 23-year veteran of the Scottsbluff Fire Department, had just finished his shift that morning, and was at home watching the events unfold. "‘Wow. Unbelievable that something like that's happening in the United States,'" was Meier's reaction, he said. "Once the second plane hit, you could tell there was something else going on, and it wasn't a freak accident. I sat there with my kids and watched it. "The firefighters there, I cannot put into words what I would think they were going through. Obviously, ‘How in the world are we going to rescue this many people this quickly?' They surely knew that they didn't have very much time to get everybody out." STAR HERALD Researchers in Florida work to help COVID-19 responders in mental distress Researchers are working to develop and test a tool to help COVID-19 responders in mental distress. The project was one of 14 at the University of South Florida to receive funding. "The key idea is developing this thing that will interact between people in need and all the resources that exist, it will be that go-between," said assistant professor Jerome Galea. The researchers said they plan to create a prototype of a chatbot to help break down barriers to access to mental health care. Through things like text or social media messaging, the Tampa Bay Area Treatment & Health Advisor (TABATHA), will help screen the level of mental distress in responders and their service preferences. "This chatbot will integrate screening and basically referral into one product. And why that's so important is people are going to be at different levels in terms of stigma surrounding care-seeking and also their readiness to engage with care," said assistant professor Kristin Kosyluk.
