| 7 taken to local hospital after jumping from 2nd floor window of burning home in Temple Seven people were taken to a local hospital early Friday after they jumped from a second floor window to escape the flames that engulfed their three-story home in Temple. None was seriously injured. The fire broke out just after 6 a.m. Friday in the house in the 1300 block of East Avenue E. Flames and heavy smoke were coming from the roof when the first crews arrived. Nearly two dozen firefighters battled the blaze. Authorities asked residents to avoid the area. The cause is under investigation. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Apartment fire on Northeast Side of San Antonio displaces 63 residents San Antonio firefighters spent two hours Thursday afternoon battling an apartment fire on the city's Northeast Side that officials said left 63 residents without a place to call home. The intense fire, which was reported around 12:30 p.m. in the 12600 block of Uhr Lane, destroyed eight units and damaged more than 12 others at the Avistar at the Crest apartments. "All I have is my phone, my kids, my dog, that's it. And I'm thankful for that," said Ousman Hosein, one of the residents displaced by the fire. Judy Diaz and her son, who is bound to a wheelchair, along with their two dogs, were able to escape safely, but they don't have much left to salvage. "I've never been in a fire before. It's just overwhelming," she said. The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents find a temporary place to stay. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Pflugerville discusses emergency service funding shortfalls, future solutions Members of Pflugerville City Council and Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 convened Sept. 29 to discuss concerns surrounding the district's financial projections and coverage capabilities. The joint work session came as ESD No. 2—which oversees and funds the Pflugerville Fire Department—is projecting a depletion in fund reserves in the coming fiscal years. The Pflugerville Professional Firefighters Association initiated a petition for the formation of Travis County Emergency Services District No. 17 to support EMS services in northeast Travis County. As of Sept. 29, the petition had garnered more than 3,000 signatures, Pflugerville Professional Firefighters Association President Josh Stubblefield said. In 2013, Stubblefield said call volume for ESD No. 2 was recorded at 7,000. Now, Stubblefield said, 11,000 calls have been placed in 2020, with the district on track for 12,000 next year. COMMUNITY IMPACT - LEANDER AND CEDAR PARK Dallas Fire-Rescue Stations To Hold 'Light The Night For Fallen Firefighters' Virtually All 58 Dallas Fire-Rescue Stations will honor the lives of 82 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2019 and 21 who died in the previous year, including Captain Randell Willmon and Lieutenant John Blume, (who died respectively in 2018 and 2019 from cancer) during an online tribute. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend is the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. This year's Memorial Weekend was scheduled to take place October 3 and 4, but due to the global pandemic, the decision was made to hold it virtually, on Sunday, October 4, at 9:00 a.m. Typically, a Candlelight Service is held for the families that Saturday evening; however, with it not being possible this year, DFR is lighting all 58 of its fire stations red for the event. The Omni Hotel and the Comerica Bank Tower in downtown Dallas will also light up red to honor the fallen. KTXA-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH VFDs In Hopkins County Benefit From Community Fundraiser, CARES Act Thursday was a big day for the volunteer fire departments in Hopkins County. All VFDs in Hopkins County benefitted from a community fundraiser and CARES Act funding. Jason Tully started a program to help raise funds for the county's 11 VFDs who are even lower on funding than usual since many weren't able to hold their usual fundraisers this year. Tully encouraged the community to make donations either at his insurance business downtown or directly to the fire department. All funds donated over the last month were posted on a board for the community to see outside the insurance office. He also encouraged a friendly competition to spur additional donations between departments, with an additional $1,000 going to the top raising department. Saltillo VFD received the bonus. KSST-AM 1230 Fire Department: 1 Held in String of Fires Across Fort Worth Overnight A man is in custody Friday morning following a string of fires across Fort Worth, police say. Fort Worth fire spokesman Michael Drivdahl said five fires occurred within eight hours and left two vehicles, a motorhome, a dumpster and a structure damaged. Drivdahl said arson units have been investigating and detained a man in connection with the fires. The man's name was not released. The damage was reported in areas on Fort Worth's south side, in the 400 block of West Biddison Street, the 3500 block of Hemphill Street, 700 block of West Berry Street and St. Louis Avenue. | New York App Alerts You If You Come Near Someone With Coronavirus New Yorkers can now download a free app to their smartphones that will alert them if they come near people who test positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday the launch of the state's new COVID Alert NY app. New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware will offer their own versions of the app as well. The app uses the phone's existing Bluetooth technology to alert the user when they come within close contact of an infected person, defined as 6 feet. The app talks to other people's apps. When someone reports to the Department of Health that they are infected, contact tracers will ask if they have the app and are willing to share their contact list, which is automatically generated by being within 6 feet of someone for more than 10 minutes and who also activated the app. NYACK-PIERMONT PATCH Related with Video: How does the COVID Alert NY app work? ‘She Said It Was Fun': 31-Year-Old Woman Arrested After Allegedly Taking Firetruck On Joyride In California Officers with the Riverside Police Department had a woman in a pink dress stand up outside their patrol car for witnesses to identify after she allegedly stole a fire truck and took it on a joy ride Thursday night. The 31-year-old woman is suspected of stealing a Riverside Fire Department truck and taking it on a joyride while first responders were handling a life-threatening medical emergency. "Two police officers responded first, they began CPR," Riverside police Sgt. Juan Munoz said. "They saved the man's life." Munoz said that while firefighters were getting that man, who had stopped breathing, into an ambulance, the woman hopped inside their engine at Hole Avenue and drove it three miles away — to the eastbound Adams Street off-ramp on the 91 Freeway — colliding with at least two cars along the way. And when the fire engine finally came to a stop at the off-ramp, officers said the woman attempted to get into at least two other cars. KCAL-TV CBS 9 LOS ANGELES Arizona fire department has new program to end growing suicide rates nationwide The City of Glendale has a new peer support program they hope will help end suicide growing rates among firefighters. The program is one of the first of its kind in the state, addressing nationwide statistics that firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than on the job. One hundred twenty times a day, that's the amount firefighters here in Glendale are called to duty. This makes them one of the busiest fire departments in the US. "We see everything from gunshot wounds stabbings, child codes drowning, heart attacks," said Captain Ashley Losch with Glendale Fire. And often, In these cases, they arrive first on the scene. In particular, one call has stuck with Captain Ashley Losch, the night she responded to a double murder-suicide. "Truth be told, it's been ten years since that call, and I didn't know I was struggling with this all this time," said Losch. "A father that had killed his two children, they were lying in their beds, and he shot himself, and he videotaped himself doing that, the whole act."'
