McKinney Fire Department to test for COVID-19, train other departments as part of state Strike Force reopening effort The McKinney Fire Department will be at Belterra Health and Rehab on Friday morning, testing 200 residents and staff members for the novel coronavirus in an effort to curb its spread. This is the first testing related to Governor Greg Abbot's Strike Force Plan to Open Texas, according to the department. As part of that plan, members of the fire department will also train firefighters from neighboring communities on how to conduct testing in the cities where they work. "The McKinney Fire Department is working hard to prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially through nursing homes and similar facilities where people are most at risk," McKinney Fire Department EMS Chief Charlie Skaggs said in a news release. "We hope our training will also help neighboring communities in their fight to protect residents." The majority of the seventeen McKinney residents who died after testing positive for COVID-19 lived in long-term care facilities, with officials battling an outbreak at the Oxford Grand Assisted Living and Memory Care. DALLAS MORNING NEWS Emergency crews rescue person stuck in 18-inch East Austin storm drain pipe PHOTOS: EMS medics rushed a patient to the hospital Thursday night after they were rescued from a storm drain pipe under an East Austin street. It happened at around 7:30 p.m. near East 12th and Curve Street. The Austin Fire Department said the pipe the person was stuck in was only 18 inches wide. EMS took the person to Dell Seton Medical Center to be treated for serious, potentially life-threatening medical complaints. Right now, it's unclear how the person got down there or why. Further details were not immediately available. KEYE CBS 42 AUSTIN San Antonio home undergoing renovations catches fire VIDEO: Arson investigators are giving a thorough look at a fire that caused damage to a home undergoing renovations early Wednesday morning. Firefighters found flames on the second floor of the home in the 200 block of Paul Street when they arrived shortly after 3:30 a.m. They say they found the front door of the home open. However, since police arrived first they weren't sure right away whether officers may have opened the front door. Firefighters say what was unusual was that the fire burned a hole the size of a basketball through the floor on the second level. They say the home appeared to be undergoing renovations because they found construction equipment inside. There were no working utilities at the home, firefighters said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Dallas Fire: Leaving Hand Sanitizer In Your Car During Texas Heat – Don't There's a hidden risk with keeping hand sanitizer in your car, especially during the hot summer months. Flammable liquids and direct sunlight can make it explode. "It's flammable and it's an irritant," said retired Dallas firefighter Sherrie Wilson. "When it's venting and if it's venting in a small space like a car, and vapor is released, it can explode." The Texas Department of Public Safety is sharing a photo from firefighters with the Western Lakes Fire District in Wisconsin. It shows serious damage to the drivers side door of a car caused by "hand sanitizer igniting in a hot vehicle that reached 95 degrees Fahrenheit inside the vehicle." Wilson said pump bottles pose a greater risk because vapors can leak into a hot car creating a combustible environment. CBS DALLAS/FORT WORTH Firefighter in training: Manor 4-year-old greets crew responding to false alarm, gets to play on the truck When he heard a fire alarm go off Monday, Kooper Shelby threw his gear on and rushed outside to see what was going on. "I can put out this fire," he said. "I have to show the firemen how to get here!" Well, thankfully for those in the community, it was a false alarm. What Kooper's mom Sara shared in a Facebook post about her eager-to-help 4-year-old when Travis County firefighters showed up is just precious. As Kooper stood outside his house, still in his fire coat and helmet, watching the Travis County ESD No. 12 truck roll into the neighborhood, he waved at the crew and watched them get unloaded. Once crews confirmed it was a false alarm, the fun really began for the little guy. They let him on the truck and treated him like an honorary firefighter, and they even let him spray flame retardant. It's adorable. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Tree falls, knocks out power and may have caused San Antonio fire, officials say Severe weather overnight may have caused a house fire north of downtown late Wednesday night, knocking out power to nearby residents. Firefighters got called out to the small fire, in the 400 block of Elmwood Drive, which is near the intersection of Hildebrand Avenue and San Pedro Ave. According to the San Antonio Fire Department, a tree in the back alley fell over and took down several power lines. Moments later, residents heard a loud popping sound, then noticed smoke coming from the rear of the home. The incident caused a power outage that stretched about two blocks. A battalion chief told KENS 5 it appears that the tree fall is most likely related, but a thorough investigation still needs to be conducted. According to preliminary information, the fire began from an electrical source providing power to a washer machine. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

A Poignant EMS Week Amid a Historic Pandemic National EMS Week is an annual event throughout the United States which celebrates and recognizes the hard work that all EMS providers do on a daily basis – from emergency medical technicians (EMTs) up to paramedics. These EMS providers can be paid, volunteer or a both (but at different agencies). No matter what the level, just remember that this person made a conscious decision to help someone in need, even while putting themselves (and/or their loved ones) at increased risk. During this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the acts of courage, dedication and compassion could not have been clearer. On the east coast, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut contributed a large percentage of the total cases and deaths in the United States. To look even deeper, New York City (at the epicenter of New York State and the United States) and its EMS system was deeply impacted. JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES Pennsylvania EMT dies after battle with COVID-19, weeks after virus takes brother Jeremy Emerich, a critical care EMT on the ground for Lehigh Valley Health Network's MedEvac, died Thursday following a battle with COVID-19, friends and coworkers said on social media. Emerich was also a U.S. Armed Forces veteran and an active firefighter in Fleetwood, the Berks County community where he lived with his companion, Shana Konek. He was 40. His death comes about six weeks after his brother, 30-year-old Reading resident Liborio Lara, died -- also from the coronavirus illness, The Reading Eagle reported. Emergency responders from across the region lined Route 222 on Thursday afternoon as Emerich's remains were taken to Bean Funeral Home in Sinking Spring, Berks County, which handled arrangements for Lara, as well. A MedEvac helicopter joined the procession overhead. LEHIGHVALLEYLIVE.COM Virus Crisis Exposes Cascading Weaknesses in US Disaster Response For decades, the backbone of the nation's disaster response system — and a hallmark of American generosity — has been its army of volunteers who race toward danger to help shelter, feed and counsel victims of hurricanes, wildfires and other calamities. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a critical weakness in this system: Most volunteers are older people at higher risk from the virus, so this year they can't participate in person. Typically more than 5 million volunteers work in disaster relief annually, said Greg Forrester, president of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters, an association of nonprofit groups, but this year he expects the number to decline by 50 percent. Asked how disaster relief efforts can meet the usual demand with half as many people, Mr. Forrester said: "You won't." THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS CDC estimates that 35% of coronavirus patients don't have symptoms In new guidance for mathematical modelers and public health officials, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is estimating that about a third of coronavirus infections are asymptomatic. The CDC also says its "best estimate" is that 0.4% of people who show symptoms and have COVID-19 will die, and the agency estimates that 40% of coronavirus transmission is occurring before people feel sick. The agency cautions that those numbers are subject to change as more is learned about COVID-19, and it warns that the information is intended for planning purposes. Still, the agency says its estimates are based on real data collected by the agency before April 29. The numbers are part of five planning scenarios that "are being used by mathematical modelers throughout the federal government," according to the CDC. CNN PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
