Central Austin home once owned by the Long family burns VIDEO: A fire at a 12,000-square-foot home in central Austin once owned by longtime Austin philanthropists went to two alarms Friday morning. Austin firefighters responded to the fire on 2308 Woodlawn Blvd. on Friday morning. Crews said the home was heavily-involved when they arrived around 3:15 a.m., and while they were able to knock down the fire initially, it went to a second alarm for more help. The Austin Fire Department had it under control by 7:30 a.m., and they had to access the home's basement in order to put out additional flames. Crews will be at the home the rest of the day to monitor hot spots and flare-ups. According to tax records, the home was once owned by Joe and Teresa Long, namesakes of the Long Center for the Performing Arts. The home was listed at $8.5 million when it went up for sale in 2019 and was sold in August 2020 for an undisclosed price. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Empty retail building burns in downtown Tyler VIDEO: Tyler Fire Department responded to the scene of a burning building Thursday night. The building is on the east side of North Broadway in what Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley said is an empty strip mall. North Broadway runs behind this building, and it faces the 500 block of North Spring Avenue. Findley said that four fire engines, a ladder truck, and a battalion chief responded. Some remain at the scene to monitor the fire, which is under control. Two investigators are now at the scene, Findley said, because there is no electricity to the building so no immediate cause known for a fire to have started. Tyler police were called to assist with traffic flow. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER San Marcos Fire Marshal Receives Designation From Commission City of San Marcos Fire Marshal Kelly Kistner recently became one of only 198 people worldwide to receive the official Fire Marshal designation from the Commission on Professional Credentialing. The designation program recognizes career excellence; individuals who participate in the voluntary program are evaluated by their peers on seven components including experience, education, professional development, community involvement and technical competence. The Fire Marshal designation is only awarded to individuals who successfully meet the stringent criteria. "Fire Marshal Kistner is widely known by professionals in his field on both a state and national level," San Marcos Fire Chief Les Stephens said. "Receiving this designation only further demonstrates his professional qualifications and achievements. We are extremely proud to have him as part of our incredibly talented staff." SAN MARCOS DAILY RECORD Weatherford College official initiates new paramedic program Weatherford College EMS Program Coordinator Jeff McDonald has initiated a new paramedic pilot program after pitching the idea to the state. "For probably 10 years I have had this idea that just because we've always done it one way, doesn't mean we need to keep doing it and I think it was time to change the paradigm of how we've always thought paramedics should be trained," McDonald said. "I finally got the state of Texas to listen and say, ‘Alright, let's do a pilot,' so we were selected because it was my idea." McDonald said Dal Mar College in Corpus Christi has already started the Open Enrollment Paramedic Program based on his idea. "So the ‘open enrollment' [means] you do not have to be an emergency medical technician before you go to paramedic school," he said. WEATHERFORD DEMOCRAT Robstown Fire May Have Been Brought On by Dry Conditions Robstown Fire Chief Javier Zapata said the fire lasted for about two hours, starting a little past 3 in the afternoon. He said they had the fire under controlled in about 45 minutes. There's no official cause but someone who lives on the property said the fire may have started in this area. Chief Zapata said, "He was taking a nap and was awakened by his cat who alerted him about the fire. He went outside and found his car in flames, but doesn't know if the car was the cause of the fire or what caused it to burn." He said at first the fire was small but then it escalated. He tried waving down some passing cars but they ignored him and it wasn't until he flagged down a couple that they helped him call his parents. No houses caught on fire and no one was injured. Zapata said the wind was blowing in their favor. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Denton's first responder vaccination rates are below, on par with others in Dallas-Fort Worth The rate of COVID-19 vaccinations that Denton police officers and firefighters have received is approximately 50 percent or lower across the departments, mirroring the findings of an NBC 5 investigation of the metroplex. Thirty-one percent — or 20 employees out of a 65-person team — of the UNT Police Department is vaccinated. As first responders, the department was offered limited vaccines from a local hospital. Additional employees plan to get vaccinated once more doses become available, Police Chief Ed Reynolds said. While these workers are members of the 1A phase with priority access to the vaccine, both personal choice and limited access have impacted their vaccination rates. None of the aforementioned departments require employees to get vaccinated, which is standard across Dallas-Forth Worth. NORTH TEXAS DAILY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

City of Pittsburgh is working on a plan to encourage more women to become firefighters VIDEO: Colleen Walz shattered the glass ceiling to become the first female lieutenant in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire in 1995. Last week, Kari Burnham was honored in a ceremony as the second woman to hold the position. Burnham said, "This is something I love to do. It's like a dream come true." But why did it take decades for another woman to rise in the ranks? Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire chief Darryl Jones said, "It was an embarrassment not only that it took so long to promote a female to the rank of lieutenant to a company officer, but the number of females that we have on the job is way below the national average." He said there are five female firefighters, including one African American woman in the bureau. At one time, Jones worked with Walz, who is now the fire chief in St. John's Fire District in South Carolina. WTAE-TV ABC 4 PITTSBURGH 'Genuinely surprising': Connecticut fire company's communications officer disputes arrest The public information officer for the Chesterfield Fire Company has been charged in connection with crash scene photos he took without permission and posted to his agency's Facebook page last month, according to an arrest warrant. Steven E. Frischling, 45, of Carriage Hill Drive in Niantic, was charged with two counts of illegally taking or transmission by first responders of images of crime or accident victims, according to a warrant for his arrest. Someone convicted of this offense faces a fine of up to $2,000, up to one year in jail or both, according to statute. "It was genuinely surprising," Frischling told Hearst Connecticut Media on Thursday regarding his arrest. Frischling, who is still actively serving in his PIO role with no changes to his duties or responsibilities, said he's very familiar with the law and does not believe he violated it. CONNECTICUT POST Field amputation performed on Oklahoma City iron company worker after hand caught in machine VIDEO: A doctor performed a field amputation on a worker who became ensnared in a conveyor belt at an iron company in Oklahoma City. The emergency situation occurred Thursday afternoon in the 1500 block of East Reno, near Reno and Martin Luther King Avenue. The worker's hand became caught in a conveyor belt, suffering extreme injury and could not be freed without an amputation being performed. A doctor amputated much of the man's arm – near the shoulder – to free him from the machine. No further details were provided on the man's condition. KFOR-TV NBC 4 OKLAHOMA Massachusetts fire chief pitches plan to double firefighters at no cost to taxpayers After years of minimal staffing and low budgets, Hopedale's fire chief said this week that he has found a way to double the town's number of firefighters at no cost to taxpayers. "The runs are coming in, the staffing isn't," Fire Chief Thomas Daige told selectmen this week, referring to emergency calls that need firefighters and EMTs. "You know this, I know this, we've been trying to find a way to add staffing." The chief's solution is called inter-facility transports, and it involves patients who require medical transportation from the hospital back to their homes or assisted living facilities. Because the transportation is required, Hopedale will typically be paid for the rides through insurance plans. Daige said he's been trying to secure inter-facility transports for years, and just recently "broke though" with Milford Regional Medical Center. People in need of the service wait for up to three hours for a ride home through the hospital's current ambulance agreements with private companies, Daige said.
