Lubbock firefighter watches friends etch messages in new West Texas Hero Home Matt Dawson, the recovering Lubbock firefighter critically injured in a deadly crash last year, toured his mortgage-free home Thursday. It's the first time the West Texas Homebuilders Association dedicated a "Hero Home" for a first responder. Dawson watched as friends, family and sponsors all took pen to wood, writing notes of encouragement on the foundation of the home before sheetrock is installed. "I think it really is a good symbol of how far we have come as the Lubbock Fire and Rescue community," said LFR Chief, Shaun Fogerson. "A lot of people don't realize that the West Texas Hero Homes do not only encompass our first responders, but it also encompasses our disabled veterans that come back." For this home, in particular, some of Dawson's fellow firefighters helped volunteer to build it. KLBB-FM 93.7 Thursday marks one year of COVID-19 in Texas A year ago Thursday the first case of coronavirus COVID-19 was identified in Texas—the beginning of a pandemic that upended the lives of millions in the Lone Star State. Texas's first COVID-19 case on March 4, 2020 went out as a call to dispatchers of a man struggling to breathe, according to the Stafford Fire Chief. His firefighters and EMS brought the 70-year-old man to the hospital where he tested positive for COVID-19. "It wasn't his fault, right?" said a neighbor who lives near the man. "Me and my little car right there have been staying home mostly." Millions have opted to stay home since that first case in which the man and his travel partners had just returned from a trip to Egypt. More people on that trip tested positive for COVID-19 later that week, including a couple in northwest Harris County who got their results the next day. Houston Health Department's Dr. David Persse is reflecting on the week his job was kicked into high gear. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Pickup stolen in Austin ends up engulfed in flames near Flatonia PHOTOS: A stolen pickup went up in flames on Interstate 10 Tuesday near Flatonia, Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek said. A 2006 Ford F-150 was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived near mile marker 665 on I-10 at 5:53 p.m. Deputies ran the license plate of the pickup and confirmed it was stolen from Austin earlier in the day, but the driver left the scene in another car before emergency crews arrived. The fire spread into the grass median of the freeway, Korenek said, but it was quickly extinguished. Korenek said the pickup is a total loss and the department let the Austin Police Department know it recovered the stolen vehicle. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Rio Vista first responders make dog's day "They're family after all," Johnson County resident Sharon Cobb said of dogs in general and her 13-year-old springer spaniel Max in particular. Cobb on Tuesday afternoon also heaped praise on the members of the Rio Vista Volunteer Fire Department and the Rio Vista Police Department. "I can't say enough about them or begin to say how thankful I am for them," Cobb said. "They are absolutely amazing." Cobb's nearby neighbor, Gay Buschemi, agreed. "Those guys do everything and we're so grateful they were there," Buschemi said. Tuesday got off to a less than ideal start for Max. "I went out to feed the horses and Max always follows me out when I do that," Cobb said. Her old system having given out, Cobb recently had a new septic system installed. The system was in by Tuesday morning sitting in a hole about 6 feet deep with about a foot of space between the tank and the sides of the hole. 6 firefighters hurt battling massive blaze that tore through strip of stores in New York VIDEO: Half a dozen firefighters were hurt battling an overnight Queens fire that ripped through a strip of shops, burning for over four hours overnight, the FDNY said. According to fire officials, they got a call just before 11 p.m. Thursday for a fire at 37-54 74th Street, a long strip of single-floor businesses in Jackson Heights. Units arrived within minutes to find heavy flames burning in a restaurant at the location, authorities said. The fire started in the basement and extended to the cockloft, or the upper level above the ceiling, and spread to numerous stores down the block, the FDNY said.Video from the scene showed large flames shooting from the roof of the building. It appeared the stores were all closed at the time of the blaze. Fire officials said nearly 170 firefighters responded to the blaze, which reached four-alarm status before it was finally put under control just after 4 a.m. Friday. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Firefighter makes history as highest ranking woman in Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire VIDEO: During Women's History Month, a firefighter in Pittsburgh is making her own type of history by becoming the highest-ranking female in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. Kari Burnham said, "This is something I love to do. It's like a dream come true." Burnham's passion is being a firefighter. Now she takes the title of lieutenant, which is an accomplishment that puts her in the history books as the highest-ranking woman in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. "It's kind of crazy for me. I'll probably go home and think what just happened," said Burnham. Pittsburgh fire Chief Darryl Jones said the bureau currently has five female firefighters. He said the last time a woman was promoted to lieutenant was 1995 and that's been too long of a wait. Jones said, "It is way overdue and to be quite frank with you an embarrassment that it's taken 25 years to do this." WTAE-TV ABC 4 PITTSBURGH West Virginia city remembers heroes who died in 1949 Woolworth fire VIDEO: Thursday marked 72 years since the Charleston Fire Department lost seven of their crew members in the tragic Woolworth fire. "These guys paid the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Charleston 72 years ago, so it's good that we, you know, the brotherhood of the fire service remembers the fallen. And it's good to teach our young firefighters we have here today our traditions and when we're gone, they're still continuing our traditions of honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Myron Boggess, president of the IAFF Local 317. WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY New Google.org COVID-19 database could hold key to disease's mysteries A year into the pandemic, COVID-19 still puzzles researchers, but the public release of a new database may help scientists solve some of the mysteries lingering around this devastating disease. An international team of researchers from institutions including Boston Children's Hospital, Northeastern University and the University of Oxford has partnered with Google.org, Google's nonprofit subsidiary, to release Global.health, a platform that contains information about almost 10 million COVID-19 cases from over 100 countries. The goal, researchers said, is to help scientists across the globe answer a wide range of questions, from measuring the impact of newly emerged virus variants on different age groups, including children, to understanding how likely a public response is to help curb spread in certain areas.
