Resident burned, 2 Houston firefighters treated after 2 big apartment fires VIDEO: Houston firefighters responded to large fires at two apartment complexes on the southwest side late Thursday. A citizen was burned and two firefighters were treated for medical issues, HFD Chief Samuel Peña later said. One fire was reported at 11675 W Bellfort after 10 p.m. The good news there, no one was seriously hurt, but 30 to 40 people are now homeless because of it. Firefighters believe it started on the first floor and spread to the third. Families, including children, made it out unharmed. It took about 20 minutes to get that fire under control. Less than an hour earlier, another fire was reported at the Inwood Garden Apartments at 6110 Fairdale in the Galleria area. Neighbors there say a man was badly burned, and a firefighter also suffered lesser injuries. The fire chief said another firefighter was also treated. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Poor radio communications hamper crews battling fire in Fair Oaks Ranch, chief says Fire crews battling a fire in the garage of a home in Fair Oaks Ranch Thursday morning quickly found out the flames and smoke weren't their only problems. They say just being able to talk to each other about the fire was a challenge that they struggled to overcome. "The only problem we had was communications. We could not get out here because of some dead spots, which has been a problem out here for years," said Chief Robert H. Hardensteine with Leon Springs Fire, ESD #4. Hardensteine said poor radio signals put the first crews that arrived before 9 a.m. at Northview Pass and Oakview Bend in harm's way. "They cannot hear you. Most of them come back out. We have to wait for face-to-face to find out what's going on," he said. The troubles, Hardensteine said, could lead to an unnecessary loss of property or even a loss of life. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO There's a critical need of volunteer firefighters in Refugio County There's a critical need of volunteer firefighters in the Crossroads, said Chief Ronald Williams of the Refugio Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Williams has volunteered for more than 40 years. It's become a serious problem nationwide, said Chief Williams. According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, it estimates that 682,600 volunteer firefighters served in the U.S. in 2017. This is down significantly from the 814,850 volunteer firefighters that were active in 2015, according to the report. The report also shows there's more of a decline of volunteers protecting communities with populations of 2,500 or fewer residents. Chief Williams said the fire departments that are currently struggling are Austwell, Bayside, Woodsboro and Tivoli in Refugio County. KAVU-TV ABC 25 VICTORIA Texas wildfire season may be unusually busy, Travis County officials warn The recent rainy weather may lead some to think this year's wildfire danger is low, but experts say our risk is actually higher than normal. Will Boettner with the Travis County Fire Marshal's Office explains that "a really wet spring has created a massive amount of fuel that we normally don't have. Instead of having your scattered wildflower patches and then over a couple months things come up – they're all up right now." This spring's rainfall has led to a thriving wildlife season with plenty of green around the Austin metro, but a hot summer and a surplus of burnable vegetation created, in part, by the February deep freeze leads to the concern of more fuel for future fires. "We've gone from having fine fuels, and very scattered fine fuels underneath the trees to having a whole bunch of tree branches and other things that can burn like a campfire," Boettner said. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN San Antonio Fire Department investigating fire at abandoned building on West Side The San Antonio Fire Department is investigating a morning fire at an abandoned commercial building on the West Side. Firefighters responded to the flames around 7:20 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Calles Street and South Calaveras Street, not far from South Zarzamora Street. According to an acting battalion chief at the scene, it appeared someone lit trash on fire inside the building. Firefighters were able to quickly knock it down and the building sustained no significant structural damage. The building was vacant except for trash, authorities said, and no one was inside by the time firefighters arrived. Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Update: 19-Year-Old Pleads Guilty to Stealing Dallas Ambulance After April Police Chase A 19-year-old who stole a Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance and led multiple police agencies on an hours-long chase was given two years of deferred probation after pleading guilty to a second-degree felony charge of theft of property. Felix Lopez, 19, visited a Dallas fire station April 4 and inquired about becoming a firefighter, according to an arrest affidavit. The next day, he led multiple police agencies on an hours-long chase that only ended when the emergency vehicle got stuck off-road with flat tires. According to Dallas County court documents, Lopez pleaded guilty to the second-degree felony charge of theft of property between $150,000 and $300,00 in June. The ambulance was valued at $230,000. In the arrest affidavit, a firefighter at Fire Station 53, the station Lopez visited, said Lopez made him feel "uncomfortable." KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Minnesota fire captain creates 'UnderGuardian' apparel in hopes of reducing firefighter cancer rates Mark Monson's life changed forever while walking his dog near the Savage Fire Department 26 years ago. Monson started chatting with some of the volunteer firefighters who encouraged him to apply. "I don't know how many people can look back at one moment in time and figure out when their life changed for the positive but every positive thing I have in my life came from that moment forward," Monson said. Monson is a captain and paramedic with the St. Paul Fire Department and retired firefighter for the city of Savage. Throughout the years, he has watched as fellow firefighters have battled something other than the flames they confront on the job. "Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was the cancer I had and firefighters get that cancer at a 51% greater rate than the general public," said Steve Shapira, Minnesota state director for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. KARE-TV NBC 11 MINNEAPOLIS First responders, K-9s working condo collapse to stay on Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Florida Hundreds of first responders who have responded to the site of the Surfside condo collapse will be able to stay onboard a cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's CEO says. According to Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, Explorer of the Seas arrived Thursday at PortMiami to serve as a place to stay for first responders. Bayley says up to 600 first responders will stay on the ship for a couple of weeks. First responder K-9s will also be allowed to stay on the ship. As of Thursday, 18 people have been found dead, and 145 people are still unaccounted for after the collapse of the 12-story Champlain Towers South beachfront condominium. Rescue efforts at the site of the partially-collapsed condominium building were halted Thursday out of concern for the stability of the remaining structure after crews noticed widening cracks and up to a foot of movement in a large column, officials said. WTSP-TV CBS 10 TAMPA New Orleans firefighters fighting for $15 an hour living wage New Orleans Firefighters are always there when the alarm goes off, and now the NOFD has an emergency themselves, and that's their pay, which currently starts at around $11.29 an hour. "I want to get paid more. I want to stay in the city. I want to be a homeowner, and I want to contribute more to the city and I can't and it kills me," Grant Rodriguez with the NOFD said. These New Orleans Firefighters took their concerns to the street, marching from Station 14 to City Hall. The firefighters addressed the City Council directly about a proposed ordinance that would pay contract workers a living wage of $15 an hour. Firefighters support that ordinance, but believe they should be paid the same. "We need them to not just support it with words, but to take action," Aaron Mischler, President of New Orleans Firefighter's Association said. WGNO-TV ABC 26 NEW ORLEANS Tesla Model S Plaid caught fire while driver was at the wheel, Pennsylvania fire chief says PHOTOS: A 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid sedan caught fire Tuesday night in Haverford, Pennsylvania, while the owner was at the wheel, according to Charles McGarvey, chief fire officer for the Lower Merion Township Fire Department. Tesla began deliveries of the Model S Plaid, a new high-performance version of its flagship electric sedan, in June, after CEO Elon Musk had said on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast that they would begin in February. Musk explained in April that development involved "more challenges than expected" and added, "it took quite a bit of development to ensure that the battery of the new S and X is safe." The car owner's attorneys told CNBC that he noticed smoke coming from the back of his 2021 Model S Plaid and tried to unlock and open the doors but had to force his way out of the vehicle, as the locks seemed to malfunction.
