2 Stinnett Firefighters lose their own home in fire A family of volunteer firefighters from Stinnett is grieving after they lost their home, all belongings and two pets in a house fire. From fighting fires to watching their own home burn to the ground, Kayte Bowers, Steven Allred, and their two daughters are trying to be optimistic after the fire that destroyed their home. "As I'm watching the flames coming out the eves and roll across the ceiling, I just froze, I didn't know, I just stood there frozen," said Steven Allred. Volunteer Firefighter Steven Allred describes the heartbreaking moment of when he got the call that there was a fire at his home. Kayte Bowers was inside with their 3-year-old daughter when the fire started on the opposite side of the home. "My daughter and I were in the house watching a movie, when I heard a loud roaring and that's when I saw the flames," said Kayte Bowers. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Austin Fire Chief Joel Baker discusses continuing diversity goals at department The City of Austin made history when it hired its first African American fire chief a little over a year ago. Chief Joel Baker took over the department of about 1,100 firefighters after coming here from Atlanta. "I don't try to dwell on me being the first African American fire chief, because that's not important. What's important is that I'm not the last African American fire chief," said Chief Baker. Chief Baker now oversees 49 fire stations and around 1,200 employees. He says his goals for the department have changed over time, but one has stuck through it all. "One of my goals is really to increase the diversity at the Austin Fire Department. It needs to reflect more of the community we serve because I believe the youth of Austin and our youth in general, you will be what you see those young African American, young Latinos, people in the Asian community or LGBT community, if they see more firefighter that look like them, they will want to choose the Austin Fire Department as a career as well," he said. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Teen battling cystic fibrosis made an honorary Texas City firefighter A Texas City High School senior who is battling for her life got to be sworn in as a firefighter. The Texas City Fire Department first met 18-year-old Kendall Sumners when she participated at a Students in Government program at her high school, where students get to spend a day as a city official. It was there that the department learned about Kendall's battle with cystic fibrosis. Due to her illness, Sumners has had two lung transplants, with both organs being rejected by her body. Her family recently found out in December she will likely need hospice care. However, in the face of tragedy, Kendall celebrated the honor Wednesday evening with family, friends and fellow members of the high school's cheerleading squad at the ceremony. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON No injuries after warehouse fire in Dallas Design District Strong wind caused a fire in an upholstery business to spread quickly in a warehouse in the Dallas Design District on Thursday afternoon. The fire started around 1:30 p.m. at an upholstery business on Irving Boulevard near the Trinity River and Sylvan Avenue in the Design District. Employees grabbed paint thinners to get them away from the flames before they fled the building. Dallas firefighters quickly got the three alarm fire under control, but thick smoke from the fire was visible for miles. The fire department says an electrical short in a paint booth started the fire. "One of the factors that played into the spread is that it was wind driven," said Dallas-Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans. "We got a lot of wind going on in there." The building houses several businesses. No one was injured. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Two Thursday fires in Abilene cause a total of $40,000 in damage Abilene firefighters Thursday responded to two fires that caused a combined $40,000 in damage. The first fire call was to a garage fire, according to a news release. Crews first to arrive about midnight at the residence in the 1300 block of Sewell Street reported light smoke coming from the garage, an Abilene Fire Department news release said. They encountered heavy smoke in the garage's interior but were able to contain the fire and ventilate the garage. "There was no damage to the interior of the structure," the release said. The occupants had evacuated safely from the house. Damage estimate was $10,000. Firefighters then worked a 7:30 a.m. fire in the 5200 block of Questa Drive that caused $30,000 in damage. Fire crews arrived to find a single-story dwelling with light smoke showing from the side of the structure. Damage to the interior was heavy. VIDEO: Sacramento leaders want fire department pulled from reality show Some Sacramento city leaders up in arms over the airing of a reality television show that follows Sacramento firefighters and paramedics on the job. A&E's "Live Rescue" features first responders in cities and towns across the country -- and the Sacramento Fire Department is one of them. The show is now in its second season. Things changed this week with Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen calling for the city to stop participating in the show because he said it exploits people. Sacramento Fire Capt. Keith Wade said the show helps educate the public about what their crews do. KCRA-TV NBC 3 SACRAMENTO Man in Ohio overcomes adversity to serve community as a volunteer firefighter, police captain Just 10 miles from Findlay, Ohio is a small town called Vanlue. That's where you'll find the Fighting 600 Firehouse where a half dozen firefighters volunteer to save lives. "At any given moment," says volunteer firefighter, Ross Wentling, "we get pulled from our families and family events to help people we don't even know." Some of the men working at the station pull double duty as Vanlue Volunteer Firefighters and University of Findlay Police Officers. Steve Baum is one of them. In addition to his job as the University of Findlay Police Captain, Baum also serves as Assistant Chief of the firehouse. In 2009, Baum had surgery on his neck to fix a softball injury. Little did he know, his life would never be the same. Baum has paralysis on his right side but he doesn't let it slow him down. WTVG-TV ABC 13 TOLEDO Georgia: State wants truth check on ambulance response times Bill Compton, senior vice president for Grady Emergency Medical Services, is happy to deliver data on response times for his ambulances in one of the most vulnerable corners of the state: south Fulton. And why wouldn't he be pleased? Grady, he said, has shaved off 10 minutes from the previous ambulance service's response times. "That's my Reader's Digest version," he recently told an Atlanta committee of evaluators.Meanwhile, not everyone is buying it, especially a competitor.Compton's data is "self-reported and not vetted,'' Terence Ramotor, regional director for American Medical Response, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That's why he cautions against using the data to compare AMR's performance of a year ago to Grady's. Amid public uproars over long waits for emergency transport, debates over the accuracy of reported response times for ambulances are common across the state. ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION ‘So Tragic': Volunteer Firefighter Shortage Threatens Pennsylvania Traditions And Public Safety Mike Kitsock never thought he'd still be fighting fires as a sexagenarian. But such is life for Kitsock, 66, in a land where volunteer ranks have dwindled and old wooden homes can quickly turn to ash. "We get a daytime call, I'm hoping there's two or three others who show up with me," said Kitsock, who still runs with the Seltzer Hose Company in Norwegian Township in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. In the early days, he had to jostle with 20 to 30 other volunteers just to get on the engine. Now, comparatively, it's a ghost town. Fifty years ago, Schuylkill County had 10,000 volunteers. Today, it still has 100 fire houses, but fewer than 1,000 volunteers. Longer working hours, longer commutes and the rise of dual-income households have left less time for volunteering. Firefighters are aging and not being replaced. Pennsylvania is the birthplace of the volunteer fire company and to this day most firefighting in the state — and in the country — is done by volunteers. WSKG-FM 89.3 DNR asks fire departments across Wisconsin to report use of firefighting foam containing PFAS The Department of Natural Resources is asking fire departments around the state to report their use of any firefighting foam that contains perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances. A news release said the University of Wisconsin-Madison Survey Center is conducting a statewide survey on behalf of the DNR to locate the usage of PFAS in firefighting foams. The survey began on Jan. 13 and will end March 17, with results expected in early April. "All PFAS-containing foams have the potential to create an adverse environmental impact if released into the environment, particularly if the foam solutions reach drinking water sources, groundwater or surface waters," said Secretary-designee Preston D. Cole. "Knowing where this foam is will help us ensure that the environment is protected from its damaging effects." CHANNEL 3000 - WISC-TV CBS 3 MADISON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
