It's Friday, August 12, and today's headlines include the Texas comptroller announcing an investigation into a bar that hosted a drag show for children, a gay couple who were arrested for allegedly sexually abusing their adopted sons and filming the abuse to share it online, and an interview with Christian comedian Tim Hawkins. | Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said in a statement released on Friday that the state has opened an investigation into Mr. Misster bar in Dallas after it was revealed the bar held a drag show for children earlier this summer. Hegar identified himself as one of many Texas parents who found themselves "disturbed by the recent images showing children participating in a drag show in the Dallas area, including one of a child placing money in a performer’s undergarment." The comptroller's announcement came one day after Republican state Rep. Bryan Slaton called on Hegar to treat Mr. Misster as a "sexually-oriented business." As Slaton explained, "Sexually-oriented businesses are required to pay $5 per attendee present and they must also prevent children and sex offenders from attending or participating." | | UK Tavistock gender clinic could face class-action lawsuit over 'medical negligence' | The Tavistock Centre, a gender clinic in the U.K., is expected to face a class-action lawsuit from people who experienced adverse effects from what a lawyer leading the legal action describes as possibly one of the "largest medical negligence scandals of all time." An independent review was launched to assess how young people with gender dysphoria "are being supported by the service" after concerns were raised by young people, parents and professionals regarding the services provided. Following that review, "a number of service attendees have spoken publicly about their concerns that they were misdiagnosed," says U.K. law firm Pogust Goodhead. The firm has launched an online tool that allows patients and guardians to fill out a form to "investigate a claim involving treatment received and Gender Identity Development Services (GIDS) provided by the Tavistock Centre." Pogust Goodhead anticipates at least 1,000 clients will join the lawsuit, with the firm asserting that "those that had taken masculinizing or feminizing hormones are now left to live with the irreversible and life-changing consequences." | | Expert: Sexualization of actresses worse in the era of streaming | Actress Amanda Seyfried revealed in a recent interview that she felt pressured to expose herself on camera early in her career, a phenomenon some experts say is a common occurrence in Hollywood. "Being 19, walking around without my underwear on—like, are you kidding me? How did I let that happen?" she said. "Oh, I know why: I was 19, and I didn’t want to upset anybody, and I wanted to keep my job. That’s why." Parents Television and Media Council Program Director Melissa Henson says stories such as Seyfriend's are "incredibly common," explaining to The Christian Post, "I think in the age of streaming media, what we are seeing is that it's kind of anything goes, right? They are not subject to FCC regulations, and they're really not even being held in check by advertisers."
