He had quit painting before I was born but I remember my fascination with his paintings. I'm sure this was an influence in my choice to study art from elementary school through college, earning a BFA from the University of Tulsa majoring in graphic design. I attended college on a golf scholarship and had an opportunity to turn professional, but at the same time I had an offer to work as a graphic designer at an advertising agency. As much as I loved golf, I chose the latter. After working several years in the graphic design field I turned my attention to illustration and in 1979 I attended the Illustrators Workshop. It was here that I was introduced to the works of the illustrators of the Golden Age and visited the studios of two of the Workshop faculty, Bernie Fuchs and Bob Peak. From 1981 until 2018 I worked as a freelance illustrator doing editorial, advertising, corporate and over thirty children's picture books. My illustration work is in the collections of national and international corporations, private collectors, and museums. I was fortunate to receive numerous awards and recognitions through the years as an illustrator. Born and raised in Oklahoma, I have an appreciation of Native American culture and a love of nature. in 2018 I returned to studio and plein air painting using water soluble oil paints. After being an illustrator for over forty years and working on so many different assignments I like painting a variety of subjects instead of narrowing my focus to one specific subject. It's challenging and it's fun. I never know what I'll be painting next. I am an Associate Member of OPA, an Associate Member of NOAPS and a Signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters. To add to my experience and growth as an artist I studied plein air with Bill Cramer at Grand Canyon in 2018 and with Charlie Hunter in the Texas Hill Country in 2022. I live with my wife, Leslie, in our 1912 farm house in McKinney, Texas. Learn More About Terry Widener Creating Art is about Creating Magic.
