Deadly drug concerns: A Newcastle and Central Coast addiction specialist says he's worried there's an increase in the potentially deadly opioid nitazene being mixed into drugs and vapes. Health officials say the deadly opioid has again emerged in Australia and can be hundreds of times more potent than heroin. Dr David Outridge says the nitazine risk can't be ignored. He wants people at risk to carry a take-home Naloxone nasal spray that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose. Image credit: ABC Newcastle/Robert Virtue (file photo) New location proposed for sport and rec centre: Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper has proposed a new site to be considered for his region's sports and recreation centre. The Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre closed in 2019 because of the risk of Origin Energy's nearby Eraring coal ash dam wall collapsing in the event of an earthquake. Geoscience Australia says the risk of an earthquake of magnitude-5.7 or above in the area is a one in 5,000 year event or longer. The new proposed site is on Morisset Hospital grounds, with space opening up there because of the relocation of the mental health facility to Maitland. Mr Piper says the site is about 500 metres from the original location with plenty of room for playing fields and great access to the lake. Protests stop trains: Environmental activist protests along the Hunter's freight rail corridor prompted transport officials to replace all passenger trains each night across last weekend because of safety fears. The decision came two days after the NSW Premier Chris Minns said he feared someone would die as a result of protest action along the corridor. In the past week police have been called to multiple incidents, including one where a man suspended himself over the Hunter River from a rail bridge. Thousands of homes needed: Port Stephens councillors have endorsed a new local housing strategy for the region which aims to address the worsening housing crisis. Council says 20,000 residents are expected to move to Port Stephens in the next 20 years, and about 11,000 new dwellings will be needed. The report explores options to support new housing developments and ways to increase housing density near town centres, such as encouraging the building of more townhouses and apartment buildings. There will also be a review of council-owned land to support more social and affordable housing. Fire season prep underway: The NSW Rural Fire Service says recent rainfall across the Hunter has led to ideal growing conditions ahead of the fire season. While the season officially starts in October, the fire service's Deputy Commissioner Peter McKechnie says preparations — including hazard reduction burns — have already begun. Mr McKechnie says it's important to get on top of fire fuel loads early. | | |
