Tear and repair: Is Ethiopia hurtling towards yet another armed conflict with Eritrea?

After reconciling in 2018, Ethiopia and Eritrea now face renewed tensions - this time over Ethiopia’s push for Red Sea access. Ethiopia has been landlocked since coastal region Eritrea's independence in 1993. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed famously received the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating an end to the Ethiopian-Eritrean two-decade standoff.  However, this promising accolade was followed by the outbreak of one of the most brutal civil wars in recent decades: The Tigray War. 

From 2020 to 2022, this conflict waged in northern Ethiopia. While it flew largely under the radar of the global public, experts frequently cited it as the world's worst humanitarian crisis at the time, with estimates of up to 600'000 casualties and countless alleged war crimes and human rights violations. What began as a political conflict between Abiy and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who historically dominated Ethiopian politics, escalated into full-blown war. As Eritrea has a longstanding feud with the TPLF leadership, Eritrean troops supported the Ethiopian government in the fight against the TPLF’s armed forces. By the time the so-called Pretoria Agreement formally ended the war in 2022, Tigray was in ruins. While the agreement promised disarmament and humanitarian access to Tigray, there was no mention of Eritrea, whose forces remained in Tigray.

This omission has since become a liability for the Ethiopian government. With Abiy now suggesting the need for port access - interpreted by some as a veiled military threat - relations with Eritrea have soured. In response, Eritrea appears to have shifted support to certain TPLF factions, raising fears of what the future might hold.
