One week to make your voice heard
Dear John, Over the years, KQED has faced and survived many challenges to federal funding, alongside our fellow local partner stations, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), NPR and PBS. This time, it feels different. The future of nonprofit public media is uncertain. Today is Protect My Public Media Day — a great day to come together and make our voices heard. Contact your Congressperson today and let them know you value public media's role as a crucial part of your community. As the 119th Congress — including more than 70 newly elected Members — begins its work, and with an important federal funding deadline approaching on March 14 to finalize its appropriation bills, your voice has never been more crucial. You can help ensure continued support for KQED's essential services, especially amid renewed calls to defund public media. Federal funding — just $1.60 per person each year and representing $8MM of KQED's budget — is an irreplaceable investment. It allows us to reach everyone in our community during emergencies, provides trusted local journalism without a paywall, helps us deliver research-based educational content and many more essential resources. Public media stations are among the last locally operated media organizations remaining, and they are the only media service fully dedicated to strengthening the places we call home. Public media reaches 99% of the U.S. population with free, enriching programming regardless of income, who you are and where you find yourself geographically each day. Protecting public media is a shared responsibility, and we need your help to do it. This is a critical battle, but it's just the beginning. The attacks on local nonprofit journalism are mounting. Let's take this first step together, then prepare yourself to continue fighting in the weeks and months ahead. There's never been a better time to work to keep public media accessible to all, and together we can make that difference. Sincerely, |
