Biography

My mother was a fine art painter so I grew up surrounded by paintings and the smell 0f turpentine. She gave me materials to foster my creativity so I was always making something. I took all the art classes available in high school and went on to take more art classes at the University of Iowa.

Painting was not a priority for the next 20 years while I raised a daughter and worked full time. But in 1981, while I was looking through a book of watercolors, I felt suddenly overwhelmed by the need to paint. It was a strange, visceral experience. That same day, I signed up for a class at the Des Moines Art Center that was midway through the curriculum. They had a little trouble understanding why I would pay full price for a class that was half over. But that need to paint just took over.

Since then, I have taken art classes from DMAAC, more at the Art Center, online, from a private instructor, workshops, and acquired a large collection of art books.

I paint or draw, sometimes both, every day. Any day that I don't paint feels like precious time lost.

My work has ranged from abstract to realistic, or a blend of the two. Even though I am painting realistically at the moment, I am using large brushes and trying not to render every detail, but leave areas open for interpretation.

Every day is a journey.
