Former sheriff on trial: All eyes on the north shore have been glued to the courthouse in Covington, where Jack Strain, the longtime St. Tammany sheriff who burnished a tough-on-crime reputation over a couple of decades in office, is on trial for alleged sex crimes. The testimony has been riveting and week two got underway this morning after a break Monday for All Saints Day. Strain, who left office in 2016, has pleaded not guilty. Get up to speed here.

Waiting in the wings: You already know the Saints won a huge game Sunday. And you already know we lost quarterback Jameis Winston, who left with a season-ending leg injury. Trevor Siemian replaced Winston, but do you know who would have been called next if Siemian had also been hurt? Alvin Kamara, that’s who. There’s nothing the guy can’t do, but fortunately his QB services weren't needed.

Malaise? There’s been some chatter lately about the New Orleans area experiencing some sort of malaise, fueled by a couple of years of hurricanes sandwiched around a pandemic and some general dysfunction. Our Gordon Russell wrote about it a couple weeks back. But there’s hope, our Editorial Board says, that better days are ahead.

All Saints: Monday was All Saints Day and across the region folks headed to cemeteries to remember the dead. Our photographers were there and made some great pictures.
