Happy Sunday, everyone. Doing hard things is good, as we all know. It's how we get stronger, faster, better—by overcoming and adapting to the hard tasks. But there's a difference between hard and hard. One kind of hard is the good kind of hard. It's lifting heavy things, sprinting up hills, and hiking with 40 pounds on your back. It's saying no to the fast food fries even though you're stressed out and they're right there. It's walking into your boss' office, head held high, asking for a promotion. It's public speaking. It's starting that business you've been thinking about. It's giving birth, raising kids, These are hard but they make you stronger and better, and humans have been doing them for many thousands of years and that's how you know that you're supposed to be doing them. You're supposed to push yourself past your limits and your fears and get better. The other kind of hard is bad. It should be avoided. If anything, it makes us weaker, less resilient. I'm talking about the drudgery of modern life. Long commutes Taxes Filling out forms Waiting in lines They're "hard" but they're not making you any better. Now, everyone has to pay taxes, fill out forms, wait in line, go to work, and all that other drudgery that comes with living in a modern society. But your life shouldn't be consumed with them. Your life should be more of the other kind of hard and less of the soul-sucking kind of hard. You should be trending toward doing the things you love and things that challenge you and away from doing the things that make you feel like less of yourself. if it energizes you, do more of that. If it makes you wilt, do less of that. What kind of hard things do you do? What kind of "hard" things do you do? Tell me all about it in the comment section of New and Noteworthy. |
