Morning, everyone. A couple weeks ago, I made a remark on Twitter: that actually, all my health and fitness advice is also financial and life advice. People asked me to expand on that, so for today's Sunday with Sisson, I'm going to do just that. Apparently there was an election recently. Not sure if you heard about it. But yeah, there was one, and from what I understand people are pretty worked up about it. They're losing sleep because of it. They're glued to the television, the social media. They're hitting refresh on electoral maps so many times they've had to boost their protein intake just to support thumb hypertrophy. Does that sound familiar? Does that sound like you? Keep reading. And all the while, the rest of your life is neglected. Kids are wondering why mommy and daddy are staring at the screen so much. They miss playing legos and reading books with you. When they show you their latest artistic work, it doesn't get more than a glance. Your dog lies by the door, leash draped over a paw, gathering dust. Eyes trained on you, ever eager, hoping for a movement in the right direction that never comes. Yet still your dog waits. Beautiful brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges fill the treetops and litter the paths outside, but you don't see them. You could be crunching leaves underfoot with the sharp snap of interarboreal communication chemicals triggering your olfactory bulbs and calming your cortisol, but you're inside. You know this to be true. It's not making you feel good. You're not changing or supporting any outcomes, except for your own. So stop. Move along. Live your life. Try fasting. A media fast. Just like you'll do a one or two day fast after a two day bender of holiday gluttony, you should do a media fast to recover from all that news you've been consuming. And it's even worse than the pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes and stuffing because it's not just a metabolic insult you're dealing with. It's a spiritual insult, a psychological assault, a barrage that saps your attention and your energy and your time on this Earth. Whatever happens will happen. The news will go on without you. And you'll hear about it whenever anyone else hears about it. The big picture is what matters, and that will come without you hanging on every word, every tweet, every utterance by a talking head. What doesn't go on without you is the small stuff in your life, the daily habits, the relationships with significant others and children and friends and pets. Those can wither and fray if you don't tend to them. So try a media fast and tend to your life. How are you tending to yourself this week, folks? Tell me all about it in the comment section of Weekly Link Love. |
